CRT here.

F.E.A.R. is much better than Darkness 3...er...I mean Doom 3 was, but to show off the lighting in these current engines, they make things overly dark.

Basically, any real-world rooms with lights would not be that dark, flashlights would illuminate more at night, the human eye would adapt, etc.

But I was just nitpicking a game issue. It is like how any game that emphasized physics would suddenly have 1,000,000,000 little crazy objects in the world, all of which you could manipulate.
Not sure why, but I love the gun play.
Thinking 25% bob is the new sweet spot,

Doom 3 has some great audio logs.. The one in the hell level (I think) where the guy gets seperated from the rest and is being toyed with by the demons is great great stuff.

F.E.A.R. is pretty good too

Hmm, I heard just the opposite. Some others were saying that the higher detail settings caused the game to be more dark.

As for dx9, I wish there was a smaller version of the demo that didn't have it. How many gamers (especially those who have the specs to play this game) would not have the lastest version of dx installed already?

Are the people complaining about it being too dark using LCDs?
It may have something to do with the graphics settings. I found the indoor rooms too dark (despite setting my gamma high), but then again I am using "minimum" light settings to get the game to stay above 30fps which may eliminate some of the lighting.

I use a CRT that is in good condition and I always play in a darkened pitch black room. Monitor and gamma settings are OK.

Doom 3 was annoyingly dark on a CRT, much moreso than this, but it was unplayably dark on an LCD.

What's with all these games that insist on installing direct x? They even have a dialog box to make it clear that if you dont install it then you cant install the demo either.

I'm already thinking the devs are cunts and its only just finished installing.

OK demo. Nothing new though. Visuals suffer from Doom 3 syndrome (way too dark).

Ahhh system shock 2, I definetly liked those audiologs, wish we could have an rpg in simmilar stile, movement felt a bit clunky for me though.

But an amazingly good game only topped by deus ex, and theif 2 in my book.

EDIT:

ALSO, note that an internet connection is REQUIRED!!! Sounds like another Steam delivery system for the final game.

God I hope not, however everytime you stop playing the demo the launch a website to promote their "developers edition on dvd, cd-rom version of the game also available"

But I missed a few years of gaming and am playing System Shock 2 for the first time. Just made it off the Vaughn Braun and onto the Rickenbauker. Great game, great mood.

as everyone mentioning slow downs seems to have the ATI GPUs

Yeah, someone with a 6600 seemed to have no problems while others with X800 do.

Actually if you have an Nvidia FX5200 or FX5600/FX5700, don't even bother trying to play the game. It will run in single digit framerates in firefights.

What if I have a Ti4200? LOL I didn't notice anyone with that card mention how it ran for them.. Maybe thats because I'm the last person that still uses it?

I haven't tried the demo myself yet because I'm on dialup now, but I know it will run like crap. D3 and HL2 ran ok even in 1024 with about medium settings, yet from the all the performance complaints, I dont see any hope for me. The rest of my specs seem to be about average with others here (XP 2800, 1Gb ram), so if I can get my hands on a new vid card, I'll be set.

Ray, aren't you about ready to upgrade to the 7800? I'll be glad to take that 6800 off your hands. That would give you an excuse to buy a new one at least. Well, besides the usual excuse of needing the fastest thing on the market.. heh

Edit: While I'm on the subject, is a bit faster/better GPU or more memory better to have in a vid card? For example, would the 6600GT 128mb or the 6600(non-GT) 256mb be a better choice? I dont know enough about the differences between GPUs to know if the GT is that much better or not, but the price difference seems to say it is.

512 MB of RAM
That is utter bullshit. If you try to run the game on a system with only 512MB of RAM, you better have the patience of Job because the loading times will be enormous and the game will hitch and stop so much that it will get you killed constantly which will cause the level to reload which will lead to more waiting, lather, rinse, repeat.

as everyone mentioning slow downs seems to have the ATI GPUs.

I noticed that this demo has Sony's SecuROM copy-protection in it. However, it appears to be a new breed of SecuROM which uses online authentication though I did not check it with the demo.

The other possibility requiring online use may be that the final game will incorporate the Massive adware system since Vivendi's Swat 4 already uses it.

In any case, I won't be buying the game if such spyware or online authentication are required.

I checked on the FEAR game site, and the official requirments for the game are much lower than the original poster mentioned.

"F.E.A.R. System Requirements Announced
8.2.05
The final system requirements for F.E.A.R. have been announced:

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIRED
· Windows® XP or 2000 with latest service pack installed
· DirectX® 9.0c (April Edition) (included)
· Pentium® 4 1.7 GHz or equivalent processor
· 512 MB of RAM
· 64 MB GeForce™ 4 Ti or ATI® Radeon® 9600 or equivalent with hardware T&L and pixel shader support
· 5.0 GB free Hard Drive Space for installation
· 4x CD-ROM drive (for Director's Edition, this will have to be DVD-ROM)
· 16-bit DirectX® 9.0 compliant sound card with support for EAX™ 2.0
· Internet Connection Required
· Mouse
· Keyboard"

But it does sound like they are having issues with users of ATI graphics cards, as everyone mentioning slow downs seems to have the ATI GPUs...

ALSO, note that an internet connection is REQUIRED!!! Sounds like another Steam delivery system for the final game.

I actually did find it a bit scary at times and games never scare me.
The only media (game/movie/etc.) that has ever really scared me is Sytem Shock 2. Those damned blue monkeys, that dark, dark cargo bay and those fucking freaky audiologs.

as of May this year
Actually those are the current Steam hardware stats. They are continually updated as Steam users idiots are profiled.

Most people are approaching 3Ghz,
According to those stats, only 12% of Steam users have 3GHz or faster CPU's. That's too small of a market to target and expect large sales.

Dowloaded the demo yesterday and played with it briefly. Very good game - cross between NOLF and Doom 3 in many ways - gameplay and AI of NOLF, atmosphere of D3.

But they better optimize this sucker before release. I was getting slowdowns playing at 1024 x 768 res! At first I thought it was some kind of joke or the auto in-game diagnostic was buggy when it recommended that resolution to me. But I kept the recommended settings and I was getting occasional slowdowns.

I have an A64 3200+, 1.5 gigs of 3200 RAM, and an X800 XT powering the game, and I am getting slowdowns at 1024 x 768?! (latest drivers and updates for all hardware). I mean shit, I have managed to play Doom 3 relatively smoothly with medium graphics details at 1920 x 1200 resolution and only get slowdowns when there is a lot of heat haze (like in the Hell levels).

And this game is giving me slowdowns at 1024 x 768?! They better optimize this sucker or they will not get a sale from me, even as good as the gameplay is. Either that or I wait for it to end up in the bargain bin for $15-$20.

And don't argue that this is a newer engine so it has higher requirements. If I can play D3 engine at 1920 x 1200 on my rig without major slowdowns (except in the hell levels), then this game needs to at least run on par.

They need to optimize this engine before they release.

...you consider that many if not most of the people who buy these types of game don't have a CPU as fast as yours or a 64-bit one.

Nor do the supposed performance increase up at the levels warrant upgrading to a 64 bit system as of yet.
