Sam & Max May Yet Return

Sam & Max to return on EuroGamer has a glimmer of hope for fans of Sam & Max, after the sequel to the pair's classic LucasArts adventure game was ignominiously cancelled (story). The article points to a recent interview at Gamesutra where Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell (currently at Pixar) points out the rights to the property have reverted to him, leaving the door open for the return of his dog and bunny show: "The license is back in my hands now so we'll see what happens in the near future."

Who, me? No!

Bah, the actual answer is, "mew"

I can never play these adventure games more than once, since I can still remember almost every dialogue line and puzzle detail

I want. I want so very very much. Sam and Max is still in my hallowed list of Early Adventure Games That Still Rock, and it's not a long list. While the mechanics of the game could use an update, that's by no means what made the game great. The characters, dialogue, and overall story were just this side of insane (with occasional bits over the line), and it made for some spectacularly funny gameplay. It's one of the few games that's actually more fun to watch than it is to play (in a good way, not a Battlecruiser Millennium way). With Purcell behind it, it's got to be at least good, and with a whole team of talented devs behind it, it could rank up there with modern-day games, but with the pervading sense of humor that most recent adventure games are lacking.

That said, a Sam and Max movie? Again, with Purcell at the helm...dear God, that could be excellent.

I'm getting tired of this game being resurrected only to die again. Either REALLY remake it, or let it rest in peace.

Glad Pixar shrugged off Disney, after seeing the god awful previews for "Chicken Little" we can see the kind of drek the mouse is capable of making on their own.

Disney and Pixar are still heavily in talks, Pixar is expected to resign with them within a week of Eisner stepping down, and Chicken Little has been getting rave reviews while most people seem to be avoiding any kind of serious discussion of Cars, as it looks like crap but has a very strong pedigree.

So Disney is notorious for crap live-action movies, but their animation has almost always been the best outside of Pixar (and the Iron Giant.) Their previous CGI effort sucked, but they moved all the traditional animators to CGI, so we'll see.

Hell, even a short at the beggining of a Pixar flick ala "Boundin'" would be a welcome return to these characters. Glad Pixar shrugged off Disney, after seeing the god awful previews for "Chicken Little" we can see the kind of drek the mouse is capable of making on their own.

Good news. I wouldn't mind watching a Pixar CG animated Sam & Max flick.

From the interview:
Regarding the recent kerfuffle over a new Sam & Max title in development at LucasArts but subsequently cancelled, Purcell is relatively sanguine: "While at Pixar I was consulting on Sam & Max 2 after hours. I got word that it was cancelled from the team but the subsequent fan backlash was an unexpected side effect. Thirty thousand people signed the online petition protesting the decision. I had no idea there had been that level of anticipation for the game."

How could he not know how many fans of Sam and Max there are?

This sounds less hopeful than Blue's comment would suggest:

Finally, Steve concludes his comments with equivocation about whether his involvement in the game industry is completely behind him: "Would I get back into games? Sure. The [Sam & Max] license is back in in my hands now so we'll see what happens in the near future. In the meantime, when I'm not working at Pixar, I'm exploring other bizarre concepts, doing some painting, and cobbling together material for my website which will be called Spudvision.com."

On the one hand, he's got the license (at least he thinks he does, who knows what LucasArts lawyers think). On the other hand...Spudvision.com
