I had some great moments with the MP. (When HL2:DM came along I switched over though.) Can't really see what people think sucks about it. Ok, scoreboard only shows 4 players but there's no problem having 8 players on a server.
Yes, the SP was a tad repetitive, but I didn't think it was too bad. Still a fun game I could immerse myself in. I DID miss gibs though, would've been a much greater fun factor to really blast those monsters instead of watching them disintegrate mysteriously.

Reality is a nice place, but I wouldn't want to live there!

A SS2 mod? Cool Although I'd like to see an SS1 mod even more beacuse I've been itching to play through the original for some time now but trying to get it to work under XP and lack of mouse support kills my ambition to do so.
And while I will agree with some aspects of this guy's article, like the fact that monster closets were way over used or how the game spent a little too much time in the dark and the ridiculous gameplay "feature" of swapping between flashlight and gun that went with it. I also missed being able to get monsters to fight each other but I didn't miss it in Doom 3 as much as I did in games like Serious Sam, where such a tactic could have proven really useful and more entertaining.
That said however I'd disagree with a few things, one for instance is the complaint of no headshots, now I could be mistaken but I very distinctly recall blasting a fattie in the head and having him go down (if not gib) from a few shots as opposed to the body and spending a few more rounds. And multiplayer was never even part of the original Doom 3 plan, it was only added on after people made such a fuss about it so it's no wonder if it has kind of a rough "added at the last minute" feeling to it.
I guess to me this guy ultimately comes off sounding like a dissapointed id fanboy, frankly I don't care if id is no longer "King of the Hill". And as I recall id has plenty of games using the Doom 3 engine while the Unreal 3 engine has yet to make a real showing on our PC's, to me it seems more like a next-gen engine so it's not a fair comparison.

I think Id did a great job setting the atmosphere in Doom 3. What kept me playing as long as I did was little touches like the children laughing and the bloody footprints appearing.

After that, though, nothing.

Yeah, Far Cry raised the bar for fun factor. HL2 had some great fun parts, and maybe was more consistent overall (unlike most people I think the fanboat was great, but the return to City 17 was a bit slow), but I have so many great memories of Far Cry. The first time I got the jeep I didn't separate the enemies. I was scared witless and just hit the gas and took off, screaming away and hoping I wasn't followed.

I am still hoping someone will create a SS2 mod using D3 and redeem my investment in this worthless game.

Funny you say that, I'm working on it.

12. Great article Jul 9, 2005, 13:40 Mario

Yeah, I totally agree, the article is brilliant. idīs time is over, they still live in the 90s. Indoor-FPSī are dead, and thatīs good. And there must be a reason why the Doom 3 engine has been licensed just a few times...

a decent writer and a new story might have made all the difference.

Right, because we all played Doom for the riveting storytelling.

ID created the PDA, the video and audio logs, the atmosphere and asthetic.

No, id tried to steal it from System Shock 1 and 2, and failed miserably. I am still hoping someone will create a SS2 mod using D3 and redeem my investment in this worthless game.

Doom 3 left me with the palpable sense that there was a brilliant game hidden somewhere. ID created the PDA, the video and audio logs, the atmosphere and asthetic. Not only that but they handled some of the scenes pretty skillfully, the transition in the intro between the radar board and the actual shuttle was a very nice bit of direction. I think the biggest issue with doom 3 was doom itself, it locked them to a tired concept - a decent writer and a new story might have made all the difference.

7. Leaping Doom Jul 9, 2005, 13:08 Icewind

I forced myself to finish Doom 3, but have to admit by the time I got to the transporter (Towards the end) I felt like I was doing work, not playing a game.

This article is 100% correct. Though I think one of the main problems is that they made the imps leap towards you. This is what really prevents them from having the "15 imps on the screen ala Doom 1/2" gameplay...since you'd be dead in a single second whenever seeing 3 or more.

I remember the fight early on in Far Cry where you find your first jeep. There were about 20 mercs nearby and you'd have to duck into and around the nearby tents to try and divide them up into numbers you could manage. Same thing with HL2's combine, in many parts.

As for multiplayer, I won't go there. Would make Doom 3 look even worse.

Dreagon said my thoughts in many fewer words.

And the article was spot-on, too. Walk in, kill a zombie, have another pop out behind you, kill him, pick up armor, have an imp pop up behind you, repeat.

And I certainly missed being able to get enemies to fight each other.

I have never been a real big id fan, but to be fair to them I think the problem with Doom 3 was really that they made the mistake of trying to stretch a moment into an entire game. The kind of mood they were trying to capture is something that a good game can achieve by putting those moments in several places throughout the game. But it can't be the whole game itself.

I think he puts into words pretty efficiently the reason the game wasn't very good. There are some people who, after a certain point, might not get bored or frustrated with repetition of gameplay or excessive darkness, and I think those are the people who enjoyed the game.

But then again, I don't think id's ever made a truly riveting story based game.

Maybe we've finally all raised our expectation for story/plot beyond the crap they're able to give us.

I don't know if a demo would have helped.

Most people that didn't like the game enjoyed it at first. It was only after repeating the exact same thing with absolutely no variation for a handful of hours that they decided it sucked.

I still think pacing was an issue, but the biggest problem was being in the dark the entire time. If that had been a chunk of a larger game, or a few chunks of a larger game, it would have been cool. But as a whole game I think it was a failure.

Then again, I was playing on an LCD, and LCDs don't do dark well. I'll admit that a CRT might have helped it a bit.

Yeah you see less and less demos before a game is actually released these days, guess the marketers clued in.

There is also the fact that if its a bad demo, but the game is good, people wont buy it; but that can go both ways.

but Doom 3 is no longer the top dog in the FPS market.

ya think?

I’ve played through every Id title to date, and after 12 years of the same thing packaged in a new box, suddenly, I just don’t give a damn about hell anymore.

true.

id made money from doom 3 before gamers realised it 's a bad game.

i want:demo before releasing the game.
