Valve Developer Community Launches

The Valve Developer Community is now online (thanks Shacknews), a home for those using the Source engine, whether it be to create a AAA game or a modification. Registration is required for the site, and its benefits include access to a WIKI knowledge base, discussion areas, and mailing lists.

The communities are saturated unfortunately. Gone are the days of editing for Doom2, when it was pretty much all there was to do. That doesn't mean nothing cool will come out for the various game communities - in fact, if modders aren't already snatched up for game dev jobs (another unfortunate side effect for the mod communities), the mods will probably be much higher in quality - but also much rarer.

There's definitely good stuff coming for D3. It's capable of doing pretty much what anyone wants to and has the power to throw at it (as proven frequently at doom3world.org and by several impressive looking mods in dev). As for HL2, oh well. Steam = bullet in foot. *snicker*

It's not true that people don't care about mods. It's that this generation of engines is harder to work with.

It takes more time and effort to create game content these days.

UT2K4? The engine is doing well, no mods, though.

Ummm, have you ever heard of Red Orchestra?

Has ANY mod scene and/or engine taken off?

Doom 3? Nope.
Far Cry? Nope.
BF2? Remains to be seen who they buy/fire next, but not yet.
UT2K4? The engine is doing well, no mods, though.

The days of engines being sold seem to be winding down quite a bit, as do the days of the mod scene being relevant. People bit my head off last time I said that, but take a look around. The last MAJOR mods were DC and CS, both of which were bought up, one of which is dead.

No one really cares about mods these days. Part of it is probably because there's really little room for extreme originality (squad based DM and regular DM are well covered with professional games), and most of us have been burned so often wasting time and effort on either shitty mods or good mods with no servers that we don't feel like trying anymore.

It's no surprise. Why should mod developers put up with the hassles of Steam for development when there are plenty of other great engines out there? Steam is a disk hog (That GCF file system is horrible for developers), and the fact that both it, the Source games, and the SDK must all be installed just to obtain and work with any portion of the SDK is ridiculous.

The best modders are working on BF2 mods.

BF2 engine can't even do doors, all the mods are going to be re-skinned versions of what we've already got. It's just not flexible.

Natural Selection Source on the other hand is going to blow our minds

to be honest I don't think the entire source engine as a whole has taken off very well...there's only 1 game that I can name off of the top of my head that uses the engine...and the mods themselves has basically been nonexistant...

personally I tried doing some level editing for it...but it just seemed very unfriendly and very time consuming...I've been using unrealed for 1-2 years now...very friendly and easy to use...and recently doom 3...the thing with source is the compile times...creating a box with a light doens't take too long...but the compile time makes creating a simple box a much longer process than any other engine I've used...

lol ya can't keep a good Tumbler down

But it does seem the HL2 modding scene hasn't taken off quite like I thought it would have, not to say it's not going too, maybe it's just too soon after release yet to see the 'explosion' that HL had.

Tumbler, you're a little ahead of schedule today...I figured you'd you post closer to post 10.

Did I mention that after formatting my system in prep for BF2 I was able to get rid of every instance that steam ever existed off my computer? It is such a relief to purge my system of that cancerous infection and return it to my closet of forgotten games. I would sell it on ebay but currently it's worth so little I figure it's not worth inflicting this pain on another. I will bury it under piles of cables and old pc hardware where it can hurt no one else and I shall guard the door to my closet from seekers of fame and glory who hope to conquer the beast. There is no way to stop this evil, you can only contain it so that future generations can forget about the horror and destruction that source and steam have together caused our world.
