DoD: Source News

Steam News (thanks elvis) offers the promised details on the upcoming release of the Source-engine version of Day of Defeat along with a screenshot from the project. Here's word on the updated version of the World War II Half-Life mod:

The initial plan following the launch of Half-Life 2 was to get a near direct port of the existing Day of Defeat up and running and release it to the community. After this release, the plan was to take the approach of iterating on the art and gameplay of Day of Defeat through the end of the year. We finished this porting work a few months ago, released this version to a small group of beta testers, and then took stock of where we were. We didn't feel like the game was good enough from a visual perspective to release.

We decided to rework all of the content of Day of Defeat: Source before the full public release, hoping that people would be happier waiting for the product to ship while we gave DoD the attention it deserved. We hope our assumptions turn out to be accurate.

Sty: It takes a lot of time to ramp up and make a mod. From the timeline, I wouldn't be surprised if at least half a year of work went into DoD beta...which would mean the concept had been been laid out well before any mention of BF1942 had come out.

The previews and discussion I was refering to in mid-to-late 2000 were showing off the first screenshots of BF1942. Meaning they had already implemented the tech and were beyond the starting phase. Work on Battlefield 1942 began after Codename Eagle was released (Nov 1999). Hell, the concept stage could have been sooner. Refraction was bought by DICE and BF1942 was the next project. The first alpha releases began about April-May 2000 for DoD if memory serves.

My whole point is that you guys have been tossing around the idea that DICE stole or borrowed the concept. Those who were active in the Codename Eagle multiplay community (as I was) know that BF1942 was the next logical step. If anything both DoD and BF1942 were born in completely different isolated think-tanks. Vehicles and classes were nothing new (Tribes anyone?), neither were WWII First Person Shooters. It was an inevitable marriage.

DoD was out WAY BEFORE Jan 2001. I was playing it before 1.0, as where most of the community that really enjoyed it.

There was a lot more to Renegade than the single map. There were flying units on 2 of the maps & several other maps to be played. It was a fine game, worthy of purchase.

I expect the same for BF2. One map is fine, but it does not make a game. Often times the demo map is not even the good one. For instance, this thread is about DOD & the screenshot is of a map many don't care for. I liked it just fine though.

ANyway, I would suggest that you pay attention to the BF2 patch threads here & the reviews elsewhere. Ask if it is a worthy game to buy & why & post your concerns.

It does deserve some credit there, the whole WW2 soldiers with different soldier classes and unique weapons did start here from what I remember. If BF1942 has a father, this is probably it.

Day of Defeat Beta 1.0 was released Jan 2001. Battlefield 1942 previews (already discussing six different player classes) were in full swing by mid to late 2000. BF1942's father was undeniably DICE's Codename Eagle.

If the WWII genre has a grandfather (the advent of roles and combined arms) my money is on Hidden and Dangerous (released: mid-1999). While Castle Wolfenstein has its merit, I don't classify it as a WWII shooter.

I dug C&C Renegade.

Again, it's a game I played the demo to death, so much that I never had any incentive to purchase the full version. Poor reviews didn't light a fire under me, either.

BF2 falls into the same trap. Dug the demo, played it to death, got sick of it, no incentive to buy the full version. With no single player to speak of, the demo has given me all I needed.

Actually, BattleField is a recreation of Westwood's Command&Conquer Renegade. It's almost the exact same game excepting effects. In Renegade people could pilot helicopters, drive & shoot in vehicles & rush with infantry & use snipers. It's the same game.

bf2 rocks! I like it alot:) Good game worth the 50bucks. Squad system rocks as well:) you can spawn on the squad leader.(Help keeps the squad together) Also this is the first game i ever played where i like the medic class! You also get points for assisting in damage and healing and bringing back to life. The scoring system alone is worth it:) I used to hate killing a person 2/3s the way and having some ass come and finish him off. In bf2 you get credit for damage;) That rocks!:) Sorry no more time to edit!

Tumbler, isn't BF2 mostly just a port of DC?

I've never played DC, so I wouldn't know, it's just what I've heard people saying.

No, BF2 is definitely more than a port. The commander mode and squad commands give this game a tactical feel that DC does not have. There are a lot of similarities but BF2 has a lot more depth to it's gameplay. Plus a major step up in graphics and lets not forget, heat seaking missles! But far as vehicles and the feel of combat is very similar to DC in that way.

I'd say it's unfair to call it a port. Maybe a reimagining.

I dunno, DoD was really a great game as far as gameplay. If you look at BF2, there are a lot of similarities. Character class, capping flags, voice communication, sprinting (with tired meter). DoD wasn;t the first tim plememtnt these things, but it did them way ahead of Battlefield. That being said I am way more excited for BF2 to be available than DoD:Source, but I have very fond memories of DoD.

Before BF1942 was released DoD was one of my favorite games. It does deserve some credit there, the whole WW2 soldiers with different soldier classes and unique weapons did start here from what I remember. If BF1942 has a father, this is probably it.

Too bad DoD:S is little more than a port. (yes too bad, now everyone will be playing bf2...)

I got the Silver package.
I did NOT pay full price.
I did NOT download in advance.
I've since switched PCs and moved it over.

None of it was a problem. Not the initial download, not copying it.

Am am also not terribly excited about DOD or the Lost Coast. However, they are free, and I will take all the free I can get. Wait, is the Lost Coast free? Even if it's $10 I'd get it. Not much else of interest in the single player FPS pipeline for a while.

There's no justification for your own foolishness. You've been tricked by Valve to spend more than you should have. I bet you paid the $60 or whatever for Doom 3 at launch. Yeah, I think that's idiotic.

And this one screenshot every other month is so fucking ridiculous. That's further proof DoD:S and the Lost Cost addon are bullshit. Both look like shit, and the only people excited about them are mindless fanboys who prefer living in a constant delusional state.

Imagine if you hadn't pre-d'led HL2. Not everyone who bought online was fortunate enough to have a time machine and go back 2 months before release. Or if you forgot to burn it to your own DVD's, or the copies simply refuse to work. I've seen the last problem so many goddamn times. It shouldn't take all damn day to play one stupid game. In many MANY cases it's taken weeks for folks who don't deserve the shit.

Hint: it's Valve!
