Out of the Blue

Well, seven start-up screens later and the BF2 demo is here... I've had a lot of fun playing around with it so far. The models and animations are outstanding, though I am experiencing occasional texture corruptions that seem to be related to smoke and explosion effects (on an NVIDIA card, rather than ATI, where there was a warning this could happen, in spite of upgrading to the mystery ForceWare upgrade included with the demo). It took a while to get a feel for the game's scale, but it definitely works. I'm a bit mystified at having to create a GameSpy login to play a demo that was not hosted on GameSpy's network, but the game industry has become all about strange bedfellows, so there that is. I asked EA if the full game would likewise require signing on with GameSpy/IGN, but received no reply.

The most frustrating aspect of the demo for me is the preposterous key configuration screen. I thought BF1942 and BF:V had it bad with mysterious hunts for key conflicts, but BF2 takes this to a whole new level, with an arbitrary default setup that uses about every key on the keyboard, requiring the user to find all the conflicts before assigning keys. The least they could do is provide a 'clear all' function to start fresh here, but the way this config screen operates gives the impression that it was coded and released without anyone trying it. I have never had a more frustrating setup experience prior to playing a game. And that's not to mention the keys you can't assign at all... Alt, Left Shift, the mousewheel (there was this brief moment when mousewheel reconfiguration worked in BF1942, but that got broken again in a subsequent patch)... apparently those of us used to assigning these keys to our own needs are just SOL. I've seen reports that the numeric keypad cannot be reconfigured either (there's a post to our forums outlining a way to configure hidden keys that I haven't looked into yet, but am hopeful will provide some help with this). After struggling through the process of configuring keys for the solo version, I decided that was something I never wanted to do again, which, of course, is exactly what I had to do right away after creating a multiplayer account. Argh! I'd express hopes that these issues won't be present in the full game, but since it went gold over a week ago, that doesn't seem very realistic.

Get a 32cm diameter electro-magnet and power it up and just pass your computer by it, that should get rid of any file.

edit: btw im installing GTA:SA

I recommend you download the program "Killbox" and try deleting the file using its "remove on reboot" function. Google it.

A quick Google search showed this:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/howto-delete-xp.html
Still no luck? OK, here is the best trick of all. Most sites give you cryptic Windows registry and DOS commands to remove a file, but the answer is so much simpler. Get a copy of MoveOnBoot (http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/moveonboot.html). It's free and this simple tool allows you to Move, Copy or Delete files before Windows can lock or alter the files. The changes are made to your hard drive before Windows starts, hence it requires a restart of your system after you give MoveOnBoot its instructions. There are no messy boot or DOS commands, just a simple 3-step process.

Step 1: Locate the name of the file that is causing your problems.

Step 2: Decide if you want to copy, move or delete the file.

Step 3. Choose a destination for moving the file, or a new file name for the rename option (this option won't appear if you are deleting a file).

Click OK to confirm you want to process. The nice thing is that the program doesn't make you reboot straight away. It's a good idea to reboot ASAP, but if you are in the middle of something and want to wait, the program will simply run next time you start Windows.

I usually find with files that refuse to go away that if you leave them a week or so and try again then it'll delete. But some are like the Xerox folder in Program Files - useless but undeletable without trawling through the registry.

You could try redownloading the torrent so it overwrites the file with a new copy (dl to the same location) and then use the cancel and delete option from your BT client?

Edit: yes... I know why the Xerox folder is protected, but it's still useless

Dunno if you've solved it already, Enahs, but try killing the explorer process in task manager and then running a command prompt from file/run.

Keep track, yes, but it doesn't have to send you the data about it if you can't see it and it isn't affecting you.

Increasing the clients draw distance is not going to affect network code. The server has to keep track of everyone and everything regardless of how far people can see.

Dagok: Unfortunately increasing the draw distance also means the networking code is put under a lot more stress, something that the engine, or many of the servers, won't be up to the task for.

EDIT and your original staement was about destroying APC's and tanks ... at least the part I quoted, nothing about hinds, hinds BTW are flying tanks, they take a licking and keep on ticking.

My entire initial post was refering to the Cobra rockets and how weak they are, was using the Hind as another example.

Oh and the reticle on the Cobra is so inaccurate it isnt funny. Rockets in BFV go where I aim them. In BF2 you have to guess where to aim somewhere inbetween the horizon line and the reticle, based on your velocity and angle, which is really dumb. Helicopters have the hardware to account for this when you are lining up targets.

BTW, after flying the jets in BF2, the WW2 mod planes and even the BFV helicopter or sooo much easier to fly.

Well I just played BFV for the first time in over a year...the weapons do WAY more damage than the BF2 weapons. One rocket even close to infantry they die, 1 rocket to an APC or jeep, toast. Tanks might take 2 direct hits on the back.

But I do take back what I said about BF2 having a short view distance. BFV is far shorter, which really sucks since my machine now runs it so well, that I wouldnt need any max draw distance. Would be nice if Dice patched PFV and PF1942 one last time to give a draw distance slider.

Still downloading PoE though...freaking 2gigs just for a mod.

Beaner: Funny, most of the players I've seen thought they dumbed it down too much, being a good pilot is not as illustrious as it used to be.

1 rocket from the US cobra chopper? I dont think so. You might want to look again. Took me 8 direct hit rockets to take down the enemy chopper (hind?). 2 direct hit ait to air missiles to take down an enemy plane.

I was talking about the portable rocket you get as a soldier, assumed you were talking about that. I have no idea about the cobras rockets, cant fly worth shit, but if there that much weaker then yes thats crap. I would guess that you probably missed most of the time though, I cant see them being that weak. Guess I'll have to try it out ... then give an opinion.

Its very simple, the control in BF2 are extremely convaluted. They could of simplified the controls down so vehicles etc can be controlled smoothly with mouse and keyboard and the key map settings are messed up. I'm suprised this has happen with a title that has garnered so much attention.

Sorry, but Im not going to play with a keyboard, mouse and joystick. geez.

I was assuming some kind of Tribes 2 style overhead map and more orders to give, so maybe I couldn't figure it out.
If you hit Caps Lock as a commander you get an entirely new screen, with a full view of the map. From this screen you can target artillery, UAVs, satellite scans (scans the entire map, shows enemy units for the duration of the scan (about 10 seconds), and supply drops anywhere on the map. You can also issue orders to the squad leaders.

San Andreas is a wonderful game. There are so many great things in it. Good story, great characters and voice acting. The car feeling and the large-scale map! I'm amazed and I can't wait for the next generation GTA!

I would like multiplayer options and not nessicerily for the Internet, but rather put the focus on LAN and co-operative play.

I'm heading back in homies!

What game are you playing, 1 rocket in the side of an APC and its toast, 2 in the front. Tank 2 in the ass and its toast 4 or 5 if you shoot it head on.

1 rocket from the US cobra chopper? I dont think so. You might want to look again. Took me 8 direct hit rockets to take down the enemy chopper (hind?). 2 direct hit ait to air missiles to take down an enemy plane.

As a friend just refered to BF2...Nerf Battlefield.

I'm installing BFV, going to check out the WW2 mod and PoE since I never did try them.

Yesterday when I was trying to download the BF2 demo I tried a torrent, it was going horribly slow so I canceled it. BT allocates the disk space for the file when you begin.

You didnt mention it so I have to ask. Did you try to delete from inside the BT prog. Usualy these progs have a 'cancel DL' and a 'cancel and delete' option. I have had problems deleting files before but it has been so long that I forgot the procedure. I'll post if I remember.
