Well, seven start-up screens later and the BF2 demo is here... I've had a lot of fun playing around with it so
far. The models and animations are outstanding, though I am experiencing
occasional texture corruptions that seem to be related to smoke and explosion
effects (on an NVIDIA card, rather than ATI, where there was a warning this
could happen, in spite of upgrading to the mystery ForceWare upgrade included
with the demo). It took a while to get a feel for the game's scale, but it
definitely works. I'm a bit mystified at having to create a GameSpy login to
play a demo that was not hosted on GameSpy's network, but the game industry has
become all about strange bedfellows, so there that is. I asked EA if the full
game would likewise require signing on with GameSpy/IGN, but received no reply.
The most frustrating aspect of the demo for me is the preposterous key
configuration screen. I thought BF1942 and BF:V had it bad with mysterious hunts
for key conflicts, but BF2 takes this to a whole new level, with an arbitrary
default setup that uses about every key on the keyboard, requiring the user to
find all the conflicts before assigning keys. The least they could do is provide
a 'clear all' function to start fresh here, but the way this config screen
operates gives the impression that it was coded and released without anyone
trying it. I have never had a more frustrating setup experience prior to
playing a game. And that's not to mention the keys you can't assign at all...
Alt, Left Shift, the mousewheel (there was this brief moment when mousewheel
reconfiguration worked in BF1942, but that got broken again in a subsequent
patch)... apparently those of us used to assigning these keys to our own needs
are just SOL. I've seen reports that the numeric keypad cannot be reconfigured
either (there's
a post to our forums outlining a way to configure hidden keys that I haven't
looked into yet, but am hopeful will provide some help with this). After
struggling through the process of configuring keys for the solo version, I
decided that was something I never wanted to do again, which, of course, is
exactly what I had to do right away after creating a multiplayer account. Argh!
I'd express hopes that these issues won't be present in the full game, but since
it went gold over a week ago, that doesn't seem very realistic.

I'm pissed. First I get really messed up artifacts with the ATI 5.6 drivers (or whatever number is the newest). Like for example this handy censorship bug as I'd like to call it, when I was to use the second fire mode, aim with ironsight for example there is a huge black square over 80% of my screen, I can't see anything useful, but I can see icons and such through it. Then there were lots of weird menu graphical bugs.
So I decide to take EAs advice and downgrade to 5.1, then what happens? THE GAME CRASHES ALL THE TIME! And not just those nice crashes which boots you back to your desktop, no.. these mean bluescreen, weird sounds in your speakers type crashes.
What else is there to whine about? Oh yeah, the ingame server browser is hell, freezes up a lot. The keymapping must have been made by a non playing PR guy, but what really made me mad was that there is no 1280*1024 in the graphics menu, which means the graphics gets all messed up since I have a 17" LCD which native resolution is 1280*1024. So I had to crawl on my knees through all forums until I found the solution:
C:\Games\bf2demo\BF2.exe +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 1024
Now to vent my anger, I will go steal someone's car in GTA San Andreas and drive it into the river.

Here is a good suggestion that speeds up the menus and gets rid of the 5 splash screens when you start up the demo.
Move all the files in C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2\Movies
to C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2\Movies\New Folder\*.*
Then the game will start without the crap flash screens and also the menus will load and play quicker.

Ditto on the key config screen being rather poor. I tried setting up my standard configs. I gave up on it when I tried to map the delete key for reload, and it said delete was already mapped. ALl other games I have played would just notify me of the conflict and ask if I want to reassign. I couldn't do that so I had to hunt for what had that key binding. Guess what, I could NOT find it.
I use the same EXACT key configs for all FPS type games and it annoys me that I can't just save a key config file in something like an XML file and just import it into any new game I play.
Other than that the game seems OK. Overhyped IMO. I only tried singleplayer, as I usually do for "training" before trying multi.

How the hell do you setup the user tracks? Create a user folder in audio and then a shortcut to where ever your MP3's are? They dont go in your install directory. The folder is located in documents and setting/.../my documents/gta san andreas user files/user tracks .. put the music files or shortcuts in there.

The bots are a whole lot better in some ways, and exactly the same in others. They remind me a lot of SW: Battlefront's bots. Some brilliant moments interspersed with the moronic.
The "sorry" after they TK is a nice little detail. I actually thought I was online for a minute. One thing I noticed that I thought was cool is when I got run over by a tank my body got caught in the tank treads and jammed it up.

Does anyone else here beside me use the arrow keys?
I think i use them out of stubbornness now, rather than switch to wasd.
I had trouble switching a number of the num pad keys and del/end/pg dwn keys to my uses. and no middle mouse sucks too.
As for those saying were just nit picking the little things, the control system is a glaring problem, and on a multi million dollar game not something u would think of as being acceptable.
As a side note, do these weird new nvidia drivers fix the shadow problems? i havent d/l them yet wondering wether its worth the time too? ?

not to mention the keys you can't assign at all... Alt, Left Shift, the mousewheel Well, that does it for me then. Haven't tried the demo yet but if this inability to map these keys doesn't change for retail then BF2 will probably be a 'no buy' for me. I think I'm one of the few people who use A, L-Shift, Z, X for my movement keys (I absolutely hate using WASD) and I think I would have a hard time having to switch just for one game. Is it really that difficult to make every key assignable?

I'm one of those who play with mouse control inverted and while that worked fine for my carry-along weapons all vehicles and turrets and such is not affected by this setting. If this is NOT a bug they are surely losing a lot of potential players. Drives me insane to enter a tank and suddenly aim is inverted! Sucks big time!

I played for awhile last night, I think it's awesome.
Going gold IMHO is used pretty loosely these days, im 37 and have played many games and began during an era where duke and doom were hip. Gold doesnt nessesarily mean its done, how many games have claimed gold, yet still put a patch out once in a while? Gold? whats that? Do you know something I don't, or are you confused about what gold means? When a game goes gold, it means it's put on a gold master CD, and that's the version that gets duplicated and gets sent to retailers. So once a game is gold, there aren't going to be changes to the code. There might be patches afterwards, but that's a different story. Or are you saying that companies are actually using the term "going gold" more loosely, and making code changes between gold announcement and shipping? |

So how are the bots? Do they actually attempt to play, or just gets stuck in the coreners and jump up and down?
Did they ever fix this w/ the BF 1942 series (w/ a patch), or were the bots dumb as hell there, too?
Thanks! The bots are a whole lot better in some ways, and exactly the same in others.
For example: - I got run over by the bots 3 times in one round = exactly the same.
- The bot spammed "Sorry" each time he ran me over = whole lot better
Other observations: Enemy AI does lots of standing around, or running straight at you without shooting, and they have this really funny tendancy to run around like maniacs with the knife or defib. paddles once they get close to you. Seems to take them forever to figure out that you've run away too, making for a bit of an exploit (not that it's hard to kill them with normal tactics, mind you).
On the other hand, I've seen lots of examples of decent attempts at teamwork. They stop to give you a lift when you ask, or will tell you "no way" when they can't.. I've been revived by medics on my team more often than not.. That kind of thing. Pathfinding seemed pretty tight (although I haven't played enough yet to notice whether they're really locked into some typical routes like in the previous versions). They're reasonably crafty, and will occasionally double back on you if they think they can sneak up from behind. Then again, they sometimes don't.
Overall, I'm not sure the level of stupidity is really all that different here, but they seem to be programmed to do a bit more stuff, so they give a good illusion of being useful.. not sure if that makes sense.. I'd love to know how they handle the aircraft though.
FYI - the singleplayer game actually spawns a server, so you can play co-op with buddies if you know their IP address and use the "Connect To IP" button in the multiplayer browser to join their game.
Seems to work just fine. Had lots of fun last night blasting bots with a friend of mine -- BF bots always were very good at being cannon-fodder

I went through the control setup three times. The mouse resetting to the center of the screen was annoying. Having to hit escape to clear was very annoying, because if you're going through quickly clearing everything, you do a lot of mouse moving, and if you hit escape before clicking you lose all of your work. FUN!
I'm enjoying the game. Idiots and spawn TKers suck, still lots of CS vocabulary (fag, faggot, fagget), but a good time. I find it easy to be one of the top players - just grab a tank, sit on the beach, run people over, capture nonstop.
Infantry feels off but better than the bit of 1942 I played. It has the problem that I remember from 1942, though, one side can be stuck with just a ship to launch from, and you end up with 10+ guys sitting around waiting to get to land with NOTHING to do.
Lastly, I mentioned this in the other thread, but votekick needs to change. It's impossible to votekick a TKer on a 64 player map, as you need 42 votes. Should be only the team voting, not everyone, as people on one side have no clue if someone on the other is TKing.

Frankly, I don't understand what the big deal is with control configuration. probably because your favored control scheme is close to the default configuration? Trust me when I tell you if you have a unique scheme like I do it really blows (sorry for the crass-ness but thats the best description I can think of).
I have a panther DX to use for flying etc hold on to that, it'll be a collectors item someday I just picked up a Logitech Cordless 2.4 stick this morning. Now going in to see how it works.

Personally I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Frankly, I don't understand what the big deal is with control configuration. While it sounds like lefties got screwed with no use of the number pad, I had absolutely no difficulties getting configured and up and running. Alright I had one, I forgot to setup my joystick for aircraft AND helicopters. Let's just say that the first time I tried to fly a Cobra gunship was suprisingly similiar to my first time flying a Zero in the BF42 demo.
My computer is pretty outdated these days but the game remains very playable at medium settings and I've yet to encounter anything I'd call a bug. One time it seemed like graphic settings didn't apply, but it's distinctly possible that I just forgot to his apply since I haven't had that problem since then.
The game is essentially BF only fresh again and given how fun the core BF gameplay is that's good enough for me. The complaints I do have largely revolve around the whole commander/squadleader elements. I had expected Natural Selection level coordination but that's just not the case. Maybe in clan matches it'll be pretty useful but for public server games it doesn't really add anything. Also, the guy who did the M-16/M-4 reload animation seriously needs to learn how to operate an M-16.
