My understanding is that venture capital generally comes from private partnerships or corporations funded by public and private pension funds, or plain-old rich folks. While my cartoon example of Granny losing the farm was a bit, um, silly, I think it's still fair to say the 'real people' can get hurt (if they let morons handle their money? Better?)

I sincerely doubt anyones Grandma spent her last bit of life savings investing in infinium, however, making up scenarios like that will take you far in politics. Get going!
Venture capital isn't typically invested by people who can't afford to lose it, or even individuals.
It's unforunate that people have sunk millions of dollars into this company, but it's also unfortunate that they thought a brand new console was going to be able to compete at all especially when companies like Nintendo are steadily losing marketshare.
I do love the comparison between xbox having a desktop and the phantom console EVEN EXISTING AT ALL. Yeah... I guess that matches up pretty good? Even if the comparison were valid, I think any company besides MS backing the xbox would of gone under by now.

I feel a little sorry for the morons.
I can't help but think that someone's retirement-age parents are *more* than willing to toss money at a venture like that because their daughter's boyfriend's cousin (who "knows all about computers") says that video games are bigger than Hollywood!
Know what I mean?

I saw a bit on G4's "Attack of the Show" about the Phantom. While -- for obvious reasons -- I was pretty amazed to actually see someone demoing the system on a (live?) game-related TV program, I was left with more than a few questions.
With Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft (and Dell, Alienware, et. al.) vying for my attention... I feel I need less questions and a few more answers.

I feel some sort of sick sympathy for them They burned through millions of dollars of venture capital (of which I am sure they compensated themselves well). I certainly don't feel sorry for them, and you'd be a damn fool to do so. I also don't feel sorry for the morons who invested in them either. I would only feel sorry for their customers if they had actually started collecting money from them for "advance subscriptions."

If you read the hard ocp article about the leadership of infinium labs, you would see that some of the have a history of getting investors and then running off after the ship sunk. SEC filings indicate that they believe they probably won't have the money they need to continue and they will fall apart. Here is the proof: http://money.cnn.com/2005/05/19/technology/personaltech/e3_phantom/ From their SEC filings:
The company believes, based on past performance, that there is a high likelihood that sufficient capital will not be available ... and many or all of these milestones will be missed and the launch date will again shift and/or the company will go out of business. Last minute damage control before the rats abandon ship. You know, on the one hand I can't stand these guys, yet on the other, after working at a .bomb (and having "the killer app", and all we needed was additional funding), I feel some sort of sick sympathy for them...
If you look at your reflection, is that all you want to be? http://www.nin.com |
