More 3000AD vs DreamCatcher

DreamCatcher sends along a response to some of the forum comments posted earlier by Derek Smart about their publishing agreement (story). Here's what they have to say:

DreamCatcher regrets that Mr. Smart has resorted to making false accusations online.

DreamCatcher has fulfilled or exceeded all of it contractual obligations with regards to the two agreements signed with 3000AD and Mr. Smart. Contrary to his assertions, DreamCatcher, not Mr. Smart, terminated the last agreement with 3000AD due to non-delivery by 3000AD of UC: A World Apart. The first agreement with 3000AD governing their earlier products, BattleCruiser Millennium Gold and Universal Combat is still in full force and effect and the rights granted under it have not reverted to 3000AD.

We vigorously deny any allegations Mr. Smart has made regarding our accounting and business practices.

I will say that my tolerance for game bugs and quirks extends to everything I play, however, not just BC/UC.

Now see? You posted a subjective beef you have with the game. And I'm not going to dispute it, as I noticed this issue as well. And physics? I personally hated in BC:M when you would bounce off another ship or spacestation like it was a pinball bumper! Immersion is what these games are about, and something like that REALLY takes you out of the universe. Having said that, I've learned to close a blind eye to some of these faults given the games ambitious design. I am a VERY forgiving gamer.

Thanks for proving my point.

I think the saddest thing about all of these Smart threads is that rarely is the quality and make-up of the games he makes ever even touched upon. I for one am all about games. I like what I like. And I don't get too wrapped up in the quirks and idiosyncrasies of the people who make them.

Quality?

2 words: Collision Detection

But that doesn't stop me from trying new ones that come out in Demos or ones that come out for free. I'm hoping I can come back and say, hey it's a decent game.

I'll give you that. It takes very little friction to set me on fire. And where i get my friction may be a different place than you get yours. No way to argue that, i suppose.

Fair enough...but perhaps I simply have a thicker skin than yours? I wouldn't care if I was on the receiving end of it. What can anyone really say to me that is going to change my life one iota?

Your point about customer service I find dubious, seeing as how I have NEVER seen another game designer personally field so many tech questions. Ever. Check the boards to see how many personal responses his customers get from him. Are some of them abrasive and borderline insulting? Sure. But that is him. That is his personality. It doesn't bother me in the least.

Of course, this all ignores the fact that I love the man's games. That he may or may not have lied about a PhD or some friggin' space rock is of no import to me whatsoever. It obviously is too you, but hey, people are different. I recognize that MANY people do not like his games. Does that make me stupid? I kind of doubt it, but I don't waste much time pondering such goofy ideas.

Prez, if Mr. Smart ever shapes up his attitude and his games, i will not only eat my hat, but i will let you know that i have been proven wrong. The saddest part here is that i am being objective. I don't dislike Mr. Smart just because it's cool to hate him. I dislike him because he's a fucking jerk to anyone who doesn't bow down and lick his boots. If he ever acts otherwise, then my opinion may change indeed.

The difference between me and you is that you see how he acts (what i believe to be utter sociopathic insanity), the way he treats his "customers," and the lies that he tells and you still seem perfectly ok with it. Just as long as you're not on the receiving end of it, right? That's what makes you a fanatic, and that's what separates us here.

Because fanboys get abuse from Derek and thank him for it. Anybody doing that is not credible. At all. Ever.

Hmmm...I fail to see the leap in logic from getting abused to losing credibility. Maybe I'm just dense. Either way, I couldn't disagree with you more.

What exactly makes a 'fanboy' immediately non-credible?

Furthermore, I would respectfully submit to you that, by the very definition you provided, you are equally a fanatic about D.S. and his games.

A person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause.

True, your fanaticism is the bipolar opposite of mine, but in your posts you seem to be 'extreme' and driven by a 'cause', as illustrated by your 'enthusiasm' in vehemently arguing against Smart. Thusly, am I to also dismiss your point of view as non-credible? That is not my way, as you should know by now.

You have to understand squirrel, this is ALL fun to me. Yeah, even the insults and dismissive generalizations. As I have stated before, the remark on 3000AD was tongue-in-cheek (does anyone really think I use the word 'thee' when being serious?!). But I will not stop from voicing my opinions - which ARE in favor of the BC/UC games, obviously- simply because I am in the minority. Seriously, it's way more fun to argue an opposing viewpoint than to just repeat what everyone else is saying!

Hey, I'm a fan of the Yankees, but that doesn't keep me from viewing their continuing losses in the playoffs objectively. The Red Sox simply owned them in their last playoff sereis. My 'fanboy' status of the Yankees does not prevent me from objectively analyzing the many things the Bosox did better than my favorite team. And anyone who knows baseball knows how painful it is for a Yanks fan to say ANYTHING good about the hated Bosox!

Something I have stated before but bears repeating is that I take nothing personally and certainly don't mean anything personally in my messages. We could have a heated discussion in this thread and still be amicable in another as far as I'm concerned. Based on your post history, I'm guessing you feel similarly.

By definition Prez, no, they can't. Either you are a fan (read: short for fanatic) or you are objective. Citing dictionary.com's definition for fan:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=fan
[Short for fanatic.]

Now the definition for fanatic:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=fanatic
a person motivated by irrational enthusiasm (as for a cause); "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject"--Winston Churchill

Note the parts about 'irrational' and 'unreasoning'. By defining yourself as a fan, fanboy, or fanatic of something, you are automatically telling people that you lack objectivity on the subject.

-----
Those things aside, don't you think it was a bit odd of Mr. Smart to quote that, ahem, embarassing line of yours in that forum post he linked to from blues? It seems like he sold you out, making you easy bait for the people on these boards. Why exactly did he quote you there? I can't see any other reason besides actually wanting to embarrass you. Maybe there's something i'm missing, but that's the feeling i got when i read it.

Please, someone help me understand. What exactly makes a 'fanboy' immediately non-credible? Can't you be a fan of something and still maintain a certain degree of objectivity? It seems odd to summarily dismiss the opinions of the only people who would actually bother to counter your arguments. What is the point of presenting your viewpoint?

I think it's pretty sad that developers like Looking Glass have to close up shop, but a rude prick like Derek Smart, who releases shoddy sub-standard games, is still around. If he was like any normal developer he would have been out of business a long time ago (probably right after the disastrous release of BC3K). But I suppose when your games have a development budget of $2 you can sell 50 units and still come out smelling like a rose.

The reason he isn't out of business yet is because:

1) He threatens to and does sue. If you don't buy his games, he WILL sue you!!

2) The same mindless twits keep buying his games. Fanboys, you fall into this category.

3) Controversy generates interest. The problem is, you don't see anyone going, "Hey, this game IS pretty cool!" Well, at least anyone with any credibility. Fanboys don't count. People that fall into this category are often duped out of $20. But hey, at least it's only $20!

Cheese. I post in these boards on just about every topic. Don't feel special just because i'm posting in this one. I also say what i want to say, based on what i see and know, and for no other reason. Why do i need another reason? I think it's presumptuous for you to say that i have a lot to learn about who i am, when you have absolutely no idea who i am whatsoever; who are you to have the arrogance to assume you know me after reading just a couple of my posts? You cite no specifics, only whimsical philosophical bullshit that you think excuses you from having to pose a real argument here. And "people like me"? We are all unique bud, there is nobody out there like me, that i can guarantee you.

So yeah. I'm still calling you out. I think you're full of it, and you have yet to prove to me otherwise. As for your pile of statistical crap, can you link me to the report that says all of that? I can't seem to find it. I also can't seem to find a report that verifies your other claims, like:

Jewish ppl OWN half of America do the homework and half the police force is Irish

Hmm. Funny. For all the jews owning america there hasn't been a single jewish president in all of history. I guess that's not the half they "own" right? Bottom line, from what i've gathered of your posts here, you are a racist, ignorant man, with little regard for the truth. I'm not referring to you as "you canadians" am i? What gives you the right to pull a racist string and generalize me as "you americans"? Have you even read half of my back posts here? Click on my name. See just how much i love america.

By the way, it's spelled "Rebuttal."
