So you can either buy the game on Steam and download it or you can buy the game retail, still have to run Steam when you play it, still authenticate with Valve every time, still be unable to play it when their servers go down and still be restricted in your use of it in any future ways they see fit.
Personally I don't mind Steam and will probably "buy" their next game via Steam as well.
As far as I know, you can still play the game if you lose your 'net connection. And while I haven't followed the whole thing in a while (or played the game for that matter) I thought Valve said it was a "fluke" that scores of people couldn't play their games when the servers went down for a few days (though not everyone).
Personally, I'm friends with a guy that writes/sells his own software (gaming tool). His online publisher charges a hefty percent for selling his software and he's always on the lookout for people pirating his software. So my look on this subject is a little different than the casual observer; I'm all for giving developers more control over their creations and getting a bigger (or whole) cut of the sales.
Now, if this were a publisher's creation (like Vivendi) I'd be pretty pissed. But I don't mind developers watching their own backs as much as the next guy, so Steam is still currently "benign" in my book.
But if they ever try to change the way they handle stuff too much then my tune can/will change pretty quickly.
I look at it like Microsft's Windows XP activation. It's a minor annoyance to me, even though I reformat my hard drive every few months. But since I have a hard drive image, it's not that big of a deal in its current incarnation. However if they stepped it up a notch (tm) even just a little I'd be pretty pissed.
