New Sony Action MMOG

Sony planning new action-based persistent world on CNN Money reports on far-reaching plans at Sony Online Entertainment to launch a new massively multiplayer online game in the action genre, with hopes of duplicating the roaring success of RPG MMOs like EverQuest, rather than the moderate reaction to PlanetSide, their MMO FPS game. Some of the article is speculative, as the game won't be announced until next year sometime, and will debut at E3 2006, but there are quotes from SOE president John Smedley that basically confirm these plans:
While the company won't make any formal announcements about its next massively multiplayer game for quite some time, president John Smedley told me recently that a new action title is in the works. And if things go according to plan, it will make its debut at E3 in 2006.

It won't be SOE's first foray into an action-based persistent world. "PlanetSide," a massively multiplayer online first person shooter launched in May 2003, has been moderately successful, but hasn't come close to the success of "EverQuest". So what's different this time?

"We know what we're doing now and we're going to take it to the next level," said Smedley, who declined to give any firm details on the game at this point.
The article also discusses possibilities of another MMO strategy game in the footsteps of Sovereign, as well as cross-platform MMO gaming involving logging in with a PSP from wireless hotspots.

I totally agree with Cabezone. PS lacks so much detail in all aspects, that it just feels like a shell of a game. Great idea, half ass execution. PS physics were almost non existant. Nothing in the game felt like it had weight. The weapons had no kick to them, the ground vehicles responded to physics in slow motion, the air vehicles simply "track" through the air as if they are suspended in peanut butter.

lol, this will seem nitpicky, but it drove me nuts that when you were hovering in one of the air vehicles, they sat completely motionless. I mean how hard could it have been to add a little "float" to them so you actually felt like you were sitting in an aircraft. Nitpicky or not, this is just a single example of all the details that made the game seem cheesy for me.

The lack of weapon feedback was huge for me too. I felt like I was playing virtual lazer tag. No real guns, just beams of light....

What about a WW2 styled FPSMMO?

The game wouldn't be small maps here and there. I mean the entire freaking War in ALL theaters from 1938 to 1947. Locations would include Africa, Italy, Russian, Japan, Germany, U.S., The Pacific, Philippines, and so forth. The graphics would definitely looks like Medal of Honor, maybe even Call of Duty quality. The environments would be grand and detailed but optimized for network play on a massively multiplayer scale.

To keep things engaging introduce major and minor events from the war every few months. These events would be "locale" and "world" changing events.

- German players could participate in the events surrounding Germany's invasion of surrounding countries (France, Norway, etc.) before the war begins.

- Soviet Union players would be involved in famous battlegrounds like Stalingrad, and the defense against Germany's invasion into their motherland.

- Japanese Empire players would be involved in the infamous Pearl Harbor bombing while American players would defend.

- American players would engage German players in the Afrika Corps offenses.

And so on and so forth. The game would be a MASSIVE undertaking consider the amount of information to present to the gamer. I think 4 years of development then the incremental minor/major events on a quarterly basis would make one of the BEST FPSMMO ever.

Age wise, the game has the potential to have a strong subscriber base for about 2 years. A year and a half post-launch an expansion should be planned that includes experimental weaponry, armament, and so forth. In addition there would be new commander level classes introduced that will give players to ability to command large groups of players.

Anyhow that's my idea... SOE can run with it if they wish...

Oh and I loved Planetside but it never really felt right enjoying a Sony game :p. They had a station pass at the time which would have gotten you EQ EQ2 PS and maybe something else. Basically their online games except Galaxies for about 20 bucks a month? When I was playing, EQ2 wasn't out yet and I would have killed myself before I went back to EQ.

OK, here's my 2c - they've looked at WOW and figured that they went wrong with EQ2 because it was too hardcore. My guess is they'll do something in a first person Diablo-esque vein, real easy with lots of gear to collect, lots of levels and all integrating with the Sony Exchange auction site.

you better get used to it, its the new "FPS" for the next gen..yep I work at a game company and we're also doin one so suck it up and start payin to play!

Alternatively, you suck it up, watch your game not sell, and get a job sacking groceries at 7-11. If the entire industry would move to a "pay to play" model, I'd simply stop playing games. I'm pretty certain there are far more people on my side of the fence then there are on your side.

Ofcourse, sony VPs see the amount of subscribers WoW has, despite it being horrible on a technical aspect, and they probably figure "Shit, we can make something that sucks technically. Start building something!"

Once a MMORPG actually becomes fun, and does not FORCE me to interact with 99.99999% of the anal cockroach players, instead letting me play the way I want to, occasionally teaming up when you find that one decent group on a server, I might pick one up.

Not likely to happen anytime soon.

A shooter? Don't see it happening...if it does then its gonna suck. I'd rather see a star wars MMO shooter and recreate the battle of hoth correctly not like the crappy battlefront.

If they would take Starcraft and apply it to Planetside I would be all over it like stink on shit. As I think this would be an amazing game to play and would also have blizzards unique art style as well.

As for Planetside, I did the beta and retail for awhile and I agree with the majority of the posts here. But I truely felt all the weapons were point and pray. The only weapon that had any accuracy was the sniper rifles. If they would change the spray pattern to start out accurate and then 'grow' as you kept firing I would consider going back. Other then that the only way to get a sure kill was to get in an armed vehicle.

What is really sad is Tribes got the shit end of the whole Sierra/Vivendi problems.

Anyone else remember that games were patched (to some degree or another) reguardless of sales and that the only reason they didn't make expansions/sequals is cause of the game not selling well?

IMO Battlefield series has borrowed a lot from Tribes and that franchise seems to be doing very well. As opposed to Tribes which is fucking dead!

I thought PlanetSide sounded like a great idea but was turned off because at the time I only had ISDN, by the time I got DSL the impression I got was pretty much what Cabezone said - good idea, crappy implementation. Physics and weapons are too big a part of an FPS for it to be worth playing when they're done badly.

I think PS is as close to a Tribes-like MMO that we will be seeing for a while, which is really unfortunate, but tribes-style games just don't seem to get traction with audiences beyond the hardcore.

I like PS alot but it got boring fast. The massive wars were really cool but once you've been everywhere and got to BR20 there just wasn't much more to do.

Agreed. I played through beta and then 6 months after release. Tried solo-ing and ended up in one of the better Vanu clans (Virus). It became rinse and repeat. I really wanted to like it, it was a great concept; but it was seriously lacking in the longevity of gameplay. Weapons felt like a crapshoot half the time and, while not necessary to gameplay, the vehicles floating a foot off the ground made me laugh.

Another problem with Planetside is that there really isn't any value to taking and holding a base. Maybe this changed sometime after the release, but alot of it just seemed for nothing. On a personal level, aside from getting XP and gaining certifications, there isn't much by way of finding cool guns, armour, loot, enhancements, etc. to motivate you to do anything. It is a fun game but just not worth paying for every month.

On another note, Dave Georgeson (sp), one of the Tribes visionaries at Dynamix took over producer tasks at SOE for PS after Dynamix was closed. I think PS is as close to a Tribes-like MMO that we will be seeing for a while, which is really unfortunate, but tribes-style games just don't seem to get traction with audiences beyond the hardcore.

I have to disagree. Planetside is a terrible shooter, but a great idea. There was almost no physics for the vehicles, the aircraft had no flight model to speak of. If they had made a game with at least Battlefield's level of flight model and vehicle physics, it would have been a much better game. I really wanted to like Planetside, but the weapons and vehicles were so bad I just couldn't get into it.

Hopefully they can get it right on the second try.
