Brothers in Arms Demo

A playable demo is now available for Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, allowing the chance to sample Gearbox Software's World War II first-person shooter (described in the read me as "the first game in the Brothers in Arms game series"). Here's the description of the demo, which also includes a tutorial: "The demo contains the first level of the game, 'Rendevous [sic] with Destiny', where you must parachute into Normandy and head for St Mere l'Eglise. Once you've finished that stage you'll jump ahead to 'Action at Vierville' where you must clear the town of Germans using both your squad and Sgt Risners M5 Stuart tank." The 375 MB download can be found on 3D Gamers, 4players.de (Germany), Boomtown (registration required), FileFront, Filerush (torrent), Gameguru Mania, Gamer's Hell, GameSpot DLX (registration required), Happy Puppy (registration required), Pexsus, and Worthplaying.

23. Vietcong Apr 28, 2005, 03:59 Shadowcat

Slightly off-topic, but I just want to point anyone who is disappointed with BIA towards Vietcong. I just bought it a few days ago, on the strength of their having recently released a free add-on (Red Dawn) with an extra co-op campaign, along with the fact that the game doesn't cost much now.

All I can say is the game rocks! Not perfect... there are some bugs, the lip-synch looks pretty weird, and the checkpoint saves can be annoying (but they definitely keep you honest), but my list of negatives is pretty tiny compared to the positives. The atmosphere is simply superb, voice acting is very decent for the most part, music is excellent, graphics are still entirely decent, missions are varied, and it has some kick-ass features that I've not seen in any other shooter... The best is the usage of the iron-sights for the weapons... if you crouch behind cover and then hold the RMB, you'll pop over the top of the cover as you aim the gun; releasing the RMB drops you back into cover. It works brilliantly. You go solo on some missions, and have a squad of up to five men (each with their own roles) in others. I highly recommend it.

"... as for every 'wow look at the AI' moment..."

There's also a "Wow! Look at the A.I. stand right in front of a wall that would protect them from all those machinegun rounds" moment. AI still has a way to go. But the AI is still pretty good in this one (compared to a AAA title like Doom 3.)

Fun demo. Not sure I'd buy it, but a fun diversion for a while so maybe on budget I'd try it. I don't believe it's quite the leap it thinks itself to be, as for every "wow look at the AI" moment there's a "Why the fuck can't I jump over this wall moment". But fun for a while.

Not a bad game. There's a lot of leading your squad which can be tedious, but not bad as Full Spectrum Warrior. I was surprised that you can die fast if you try to do stuff by yourself like in normal 3D shooter games (e.g., Call of Duty).

I like how the demo started with like in Band of Brothers miniseries. In the plane, plane gets shot at, time to parachute, etc. I hope to finish the demo on the weekned. I cannot play loud at this hour with bass.

"If you didn't like FSW, you will hate this game. Personally, I liked FSW, but this was a very poor mans version of it. At least FSW knew it was purely tactical, BIA didn't seem to know what it was..."

I didn't really like FSW (though I definitely recognize its merits) but I like Brothers in Arms. I'd say BIA is for anyone who wanted to add more FPS action to FSW, and appreciates a damn good history lesson. BIA is a fun game made by a talented team with a passion for the subject matter. The only real strike against it, IMO, is that Gearbox is a little late to the party -- they made a loving tribute to "The Greatest Generation" just as "Generation Y" and "Generation ctl+alt+dlt" have had their fill of WWII media.

Edit: I feel I must add that I'm a GenXer... and I'm getting a bit tired of WWII games too. I still like BIA -- maybe cuz I groaned when I heard about it but smiled when I played it.

Is this game better or worse than full spectrum warrior? Is it the same 30 seconds of gameplay repeated over 8 hours like that game?

17. PC Demo Apr 26, 2005, 19:17 Steel Rockhard

I'm enjoying the Xbox version, and I thought the PC demo looked pretty good. Ran well, played well; I'd say it's a pretty good demo of a pretty good game.

I warned you people on December 24, 2004 that this game was designed for consoles.

Gearbox said the PC version wasn't a mere port of the XBOX version, but, alas, it is.
It's a consolified FPS with small, closed levels, washed out textures and many other stuff you can read at the game official forum.

I want huge, Far Cryian levels! Now, back to Darwinia and Mount & Blade...

This game blows hard. Graphics are cruddy, the voice acting is horrid, and the gameplay is so dull. It actually makes me wanna go back to Call of Duty to realize how much better that game is than this.

If anyone has issues with how this game is on PC versus consoles, I encourage you to let Gearbox Software know. This is the only way we'll see the PC continue to get the attention it deserves.

I agree with the mouse lag issue. The game is very unresponsive, and I have a very good system.

the mouse lags in this game, which makes the game completely worthless on PC]

I wouldn't say completely worthless, but that kinfd of thing really pisses me off....it happens everytime with Xbox codeveloped games (Thief III, DX2...) I don't know what the technical reason is.

Just bought SWAT4 and the mouse is super smooth from the get go...the graphics are better than BIA too with more DX9 tricks.

There's no way BiA would play better on a console than it does on the PC. The controls are tight and very cleanly implemented on the PC, just as I'm sure they are on the XB, but it's still very much a twitch game in places.

Hint to anyone trying this thing out for the first time: just turn off the suppression indicators right away. You squad will tell you when the enemy is suppressed and it makes for a much more intense experience if you don't have glowing red blobs to tell you where every AI is.

Fun game

More like it was designed for a console so THAT makes it worthless on the PC.
