Ghost Recon 2 PC Cancelled

Cancellation of Ghost Recon 2 PC on the Official Site (thanks Frans) has word that the PC edition of Ghost Recon 2 has been cancelled:

"This decision was not an easy one.

We did not want to disappoint the loyal Ghost Recon fans, but we did not want to risk releasing a final product that did not meet their high expectations. With the launch of Ghost Recon 3 planned for Winter 2005, significant human resources were needed to ensure the quality of the future instalment of the series, thus potentially jeopardizing the quality of either Ghost Recon 2 PC or Ghost Recon 3. Taking into account their close release dates, and the fact that we felt the third opus would be a much more satisfying and evolved gaming experience, we were forced to conclude that it was in the interest of gamers for us to cancel the PC version of Ghost Recon 2. But Ghost Recon 3 on PC will hit shelves the fourth quarter of 2005, so the wait won’t be long, and will definitely be worth it."

I personally don`t think any game with an invisible weap in the 1st pov can be called a 1st person view.
Yes, because in real life holding a gun looks just like it does in Counter Strike (and you would never ever move your gun from that view either).

I appreciate the on-screen gun, but I also see nothing unrealistic about not having it. The idea of someone not buying a game because of this staggers me...

"I played the game entirely in first person"

I personally don`t think any game with an invisible weap in the 1st pov can be called a 1st person view. And as well imho, GR and R6 were exactly the same in this area. Invis weaps. Which as well blows. lol It was ok for R6s day. But I wouldn`t touch a GR game now unless it sports a weap in view.

Ghost Recon was little more than R6 outdoors. The change of venue was enough to make some differences in the gameplay, but not that much. Operation Flashpoint offered a ton more than GR as far as gameplay options and free-form gameplay in an outdoors environment.

While I might disagree a bit with GR being R6 outdoors, Op. Flashpoint was far and away the superior game. Here's praying that OFP2 stays true to the original design.

Having actually played Ghost Recon 2 I can say that it wasn't all bad... A few singleplayer levels were kinda linear but most of them had the same free-roaming, no restrictions feel to them that GR1 had.

We must have been playing different versions of GR1, because the one I played had invisible walls everywhere. This was hard to swallow after playing a REAL free-form game in Operation Flashpoint. I really don't like games that claim to be free-form when, in reality, they simply give you 2 or 3 choices within a set of circumstances.

Ghost Recon was little more than R6 outdoors. The change of venue was enough to make some differences in the gameplay, but not that much. Operation Flashpoint offered a ton more than GR as far as gameplay options and free-form gameplay in an outdoors environment.

R6 or Ghost Recon - doesn't really matter anyway as it seems we will never see another of either series for the PC. I HATE PLAYING SHOOTERS ON A CONSOLE, DAMMIT!

Comparing Rainbow Six to Ghost Recon is comparing apples and oranges. They really aren't the same games.

Besides, sucks that this is purely a console game anyhow now.

Bleh, Rainbow 6 and Ghost recon are very diffrent games, but I guess if you didnt play the game for more then 5 minutes you wouldnt realise that. More importantly, playing Ghost recon with friends on coop mode and team speak was by far one of the best gaming experiences I have had.

And instead of playing in confined CQB areas, you were involved in operations in the countryside and urban areas.

Oh yeah - this game was DEFINITELY a Rainbow Six clone.

What a moron you are. And just so you know Ghost Recon > Rainbow Six.

You commanded a squad and gave them orders yes? You picked loadouts before mission? One shot kills?

R6 clone.

What the hell, Ghost Recon was not an R6 game at ALL.

An R6 game consists of forty five minutes of meticulous planning followed by two minutes of actual combat ending in the death of Chavez followed by forty five minutes more of meticulous planning followed (hopefully) by a successful mission.

Ghost Recon was just an FPS.

what do you expect from the french?
Oi, don't you dare knock the abilities of french game developers. They've given us some of the best titles of all time!! (and often with a damned sight more originality than most games).

Ghost Recon 1 blew chunks. Worst overhyped Rainbow Six clone ever.

Ray,

Good points, but I'm still left wondering about the underlying math.

Yes, the console market is >> the PC market. Agreed. But the competiton is also much fiercer in the console market. GR2 for the consoles is competing against a wealth of other titles out there, while it would have a relatively open field in the PC market.

Now maybe the real numbers actually hold up, and you can make a console game that's like the other console titles in its class and still make a greater profit then releasing into an empty PC market. But I also wonder if the all the marketing guys are seeing the total size of the console market rather than what they can realistically get in that space glutted with other titles.

both of them are bad for tactical combat games mmmmmmkaaaaay ?

The fact that they are bad also doesn't matter because you don't have to use third person perspective. I played the game entirely in first person and there was not one instance where I felt that I was at a disadvantage by not using third person.

I'm bummed that GR2 for PC is canceled, but to be honest, a June release date would likely mean it would get RUN OVER by Battlefield 2. This way I won't have to split my focus in June.

i mean shouldercam\3rdperson shooter

Which was entirely optional. You could play the entire game without once having to use third person view.

fuckingpieceofcrapeatshitanddie! ok one thing is that game wouldn't been best of it's kind (i mean shouldercam\3rdperson shooter - pleeeeeeease) but console only ? wtf ? cmoooon ppl

soon we'll be forced to play Sims 24/7 OR 8 MMOs @ a time coz everything else will be non-existant i guess these tactical combat games doesn't sell AS good as they'd want too bad. sooner or later this genre will be as dead aswell and not because there won't be any games, hell no. there will be xcept they're gonna be SO "arcadazed" that they won't count

aw fuck this. at least SWAT4 came out awesome !
