I would have to imagine this plays better on a console, but it is a decent attempt at PC controls.
Overall, I thought it was ok, but I question the overall gameplay and there were a few nitpicks. Looking at the eigh remaining badges, is the game mostly entering minds or is there more to the "world" setting. It seems
really heavy into collecting. I hit rank seven in his mind when I just gave up collecting figments; I was bored and figured I would pick up more in the outer world (little did I know that was the end of the demo) and collecting "money" did not seem as important since it respawns.
Graphically, it is good. Obviously, the designs are really creative, but I am surprised they went with such a muted color palette. I thought certain parts in the (brain) level just lacked lighting outright; once I did my light-up jump move, everthing lit up just fine and looked good. More contrast, please! Not a lot of whizzbang features, but it all ran well at 1280x1024 and the view distance/priority works fine.
Otherwise, I am just curious as to how much exploration there is in the "world" or if you are just running from head to head. I was surprised by the length of this demo; I thought that I would be able to get past the groundskeeper, get my mental web tool, and so forth.
My biggest gripe really is with the controls and camera. For a third-person game, I have played other games that did it much better; this system did not feel as free nor as smooth. Do not get me wrong, the controls are not "bad," but they could be improved. Excluding that roughness, I was annoyed that the camera would actually fight me at times and there was one point (sliding down the cave toward the refrigerator) where the (nearly) pre-set camera angle was terrible for looking at or spotting the side passage leading out. Likewise, because of how the camera was placed and the lack of contrast, certain jumps were a little harder than they should have been.
Overall, I did enjoy it, but I cannot see myself playing it for extended periods; the camera slowness/clunkiness of the game game would wear me down a bit. I see that, thankfully, the PC version will only MSRP for $30 and I think I will pick it up next week. After all, I finished
Chaos Theory and I figure I am at least halfway through
Swat 4. I'll trade both of those in and I should have nearly the $30 I need.
I do suggest it for all platformer fans, but I would only hold it as a good platformer with great aesthetic design in place of being the new
Mario.
MmmmmehWanting a new
Grim Fandango :(,
