John Smedley on MMOs

Sony Online Entertainment sends along a letter from SOE president John Smedley discussing the impact of Blizzard's World of Warcraft on the MMORPG scene as well as some ruminations on the future of the genre. Here's a bit:

Where are we going? What are we going to be doing to revolutionize this business? Well let me throw out just a few of the things we're thinking about here at SOE.

What if you could have families in MMO's? Virtual Children... What if your characters could have children and pass on the family name.....

What if players could build fantastic dungeons that become part of the worlds we create with tools we give them? How would that work exactly?

Can MMORPGs have skill-based combat?

What if?

That was funny.

What if we actually released a game that people cared about?

Yeah, if WOW is so great, why did you mandate that everyone at SOE immediately remove WOW off their computers at work?? Anyone got a copy of that e-mail?

This letter sounds like Smedley has gone freaking insane. Yeah, like a simple letter to the public gives you the license to steal everyone else’s game mechanics or ideas?

Or perhaps this is a admission letter of defeat? Has SOE really fallen this low?

Also i think EQ2 did some major blundoring on there part. Mainly forcing everyone to the Isle of Refuge. And then forcing people to do an even longer 'tutorial' once they get to their respective cities.

Yeah the reason why they had probly the second best mmorpg release behind wow is because of a tutorial. Oh wait that makes no sense does it?

You are fucking retard

"What if?"

How about, what if all this stuff has been thought up already and no publisher has had the balls to let a developer do it. But that never happens...right?

I think he meant player skills. That would be my guess, since most games are based on some sort of "RPG Skill" system already. So would a game that allows the faster player to get off the first shot, and accuracy like FPS games work in an MMORPG.

My guess is it won't work for most people. If you always lose because you have lousy eye-hand coordination, you won't play these games very long.

Verant/SOE needs to quit looking at uber graphics and start looking at fun.

Player A has 10 (adjusted by strength and whatnot) in the Kung Fu combat skill and fights unarmed.

Player B has 9 (adjusted too) in the Two Handed Weapons combat skill and fights with a huge two handed glaive.

A walks up to B and presses a button that initiates combat. B responds with the same button-press. A wins because 10 > 9.

Fun.
