Well, Dr. Toothy wasn't as tough on me as I thought yesterday... after strapping me in and making all sorts of dire predictions, he just went ahead with a cleaning and a warning that I need to be more diligent with my home care, making plans to reevaluate this in a couple of weeks. I'm not going to say this was effective (L.A. Confidential: "Is that how you used to play 'good-cop-bad-cop'?"), but please forgive any errors I make as I learn to type and floss at the same time.

Let's have a bedtime story.

Once upon a time there were a bunch of guys in school. They were all sadists. This means that they liked to hurt people because it made them feel good. What they would do, is they would pick someone out of the crowd and say "Let's give him the silent treatment". They had no reason to. They simply wanted to hurt. The guy would talk to them and they would not answer. They would keep this up until the guy started crying. Then the sadists would go look for a new victim.

After awhile the sadists grew up and became adults. When you are a child, adult is a mystical state that means "you are all grown up. Superior over kids". This is a total lie.

Adults are children in bigger bodies.

Smart people grow up to be bigger smart people. Gabby people grow up to be bigger gabby people. Funny people grow up to be bigger funny people. Sadists grow up to be bigger sadists. But something else also happens to the adults. They get this thing called a conscious that they did not have as a child. A child can be sadistic and not care. They have no conscious. But an adult has a conscious. They know what they are doing and they know what the consequences are.

The Sadists, now that they are bigger, want to hurt people even more than they did as a child. But their conscious prevents them. They know Sadism is wrong. So what do they do? They lie to themselves. The Sadists make up something that allows them to look at their victim not as a human who it is bad to hurt, but as a....terrorist...or a hooligan....or...maybe.... a troll.

See, now that they have labeled the victim a troll, he is no longer human. The conscious only stops the sadist from hurting humans. Now the Sadists have free reign to begin hurting people all over again. All they do is look for someone, anyone, put a label on them to dehumanize them like Troll, and start the torture.

Don't let anyone fool you adults are better. They are all just like the people in your school. You can never escape them. The bullies, the sadists, the name callers, the people that hate you for knowing things, the low people that want to drag you down to where they live. Adulthood is exactly like high school, only it is more dangerous and it hurts more.
