I guess I just prefered the subtlety of HL2 versus the very overt and heavy handed story telling of games like T:V and Halo 2
Ah well, is now the lack of story in HL2 called "sublety of HL2"? Amazing, you should be doing politics or go working for marketing companies.
There is NO story in HL2 (even not hiding in the background waiting for you to be discovered) except to kill all the combines and stop Breen from stepping into the portal. The last part is even held back from you until enter the citadel at the end of the game.
The rest of the story is partly a mess and partly non-existant but valve succeeded to some random pieces of incoherent story are so good camouflaged and put into the game that some people think: "wow, if we tie this up all together, a real good story must appear".
No, Gabe Newell is definitely not the David Lynch of the gaming industry. He failed in any way he could while doing HL2.
