I disagree about Gordon being a dead monkey. Gordon doesn't talk largely because hearing someone else's voice asking questions you wouldn't ask really takes you out of the game. HL is all about being there.
I really like the lack of personality in Gordon. He's just there stay alive. He doesn't care about saving the world, he doesn't care about saving the scientists. He just cares about staying alive. It's a bit refreshing.
As for HL2 being too linear... well yeah it's linear. But it's a game set up to be cinematic. You can't have that without it being linear. There's no real way to convey a deep story if the player can miss a great deal. I mean, people always praise Deus Ex for being non-linear, but that's not true. You could solve the puzzles differently, but it was always the same puzzles to be solved.
In fact, from what I understand Far Cry is the only game that really isn't linear, because lord knows Doom 3 was among the most linear games I've played, Halo 2 was as linear as HL2, Painkiller was more linear, Tribes was as linear... pretty much every game I can think of was pretty linear. It's very hard to have a coherent story without being linear.
Was Half Life 2 very linear? No, because parts I've replayed have turned out differently. Not quite as much as Halo 2, but I still feel more freedom in HL2. It's nowhere near as linear as I felt Max Payne 2 was (which I loved) or the new Punisher game (which I hate.)
