Tribes didn't really have a story.
Tribes in the past didn't, but Vengeance did. I'm not saying it was a literary masterpiece (the story part, that is), but it was pretty dang good. Better than the stories on most games I've played this year (Far Cry, DOOM3, Half-Life 2, and Halo 2).
Essentially, every few missions advanced the story more and more, with stuff in between being filler. Yes, the first time you're in the arena in SP it seems to go on forever, but soon afterwords it really kicks into high gear.
I was astoniished, as I only bought it for the MP aspect.
