What's the opinion on the best video card to get around the $100 - $150 range? I have an aging TI4200 and want an interim upgrade before I completely revamp this summer to PCI-E.
TIA.

Pretty good for a Canada boy who doesn't care for geography. Probably better than Americans could place Canadian provinces too!

So the concensus really is Processor, Graphics Card, and then Memory? I think it depends on your system. Before recently replacing my processor and RAM, I first upgraded the video card, and that worked well for D3 and HL2. But it was a really good video card (6800GT OC). There's a point where having a too slow processor will start limiting performance, but I don't know what it is. I do know, based on experience, that as long as the CPU is moderately fast and you have sufficient RAM, that a high end video card will make games play well ....

I bet a lot of it has to do with the order the states are given to you.... I was wondering about that. Get handed Colorado or Wyoming as your first state and you're likely to get it wrong to some degree.
I had 47 (misclick on one), 3 miles, 240ish seconds.
So the concensus really is Processor, Graphics Card, and then Memory? No. I'd upgrade the memory first, then the graphics card, and then the CPU. It's almost a toss-up between the memory and graphics card though -- I know for certain that WoW and HL2 will benefit from 1G of memory. But they'll also benefit greatly from a faster video card. Since your budget for the video card is only $200 I'd go for the memory first.
On the video card -- is $200 the absolute most you'll spend, and you'd rather spend much less? You can get a GeForce 6600GT AGP for $219 from NewEgg.com. Nothing is going to beat that for price/performance. I certainly wouldn't drop nearly $200 on a 9700 Pro when the performance is so poor compared to a 6600.
Honestly, forget the CPU upgrade. It will do the absolute least for you -- I seriously doubt your system is CPU constrained at all. Your video card is holding it back. Instead get another 512M of memory and the 6600GT.
Gack -- just checked prices on CPUs. Do not spend nearly $200 on a new 3200+ XP. You simply will not see the performance returns from it. That money is much better spent elsewhere -- hell, for that price you could almost buy an Athlon64 2800+ and new MB! Save your money!
Edit: Oh, and you don't need to go to 2 sticks of 512M. You have 3 slots. Use them. Just pick up another good quality 512M stick that matches your 256M ones. There is really no reason not to do this. But hey, if you really want to ditch those 256M sticks, just send them my way. I have systems that could use 'em. This comment was edited on Jan 7, 11:32. |

intermediate is a helluva lot easier when compared to expert -- all placed states disappear so you have to locate each state completely on its own!

It does - I tried it again, states in a different order: 92% 12 miles 188 sec.
Very little error for states in the right/wrong location....

84%, 52m, 342 seconds. Which is probably way better than most Americans (or, indeed I) could do for English counties. Or even countries in Europe. It's those wierd ones around Tennessee that I don't know.

Depends really. You actually probably should upgrade quite a bit if your going through with it. If I were you I'd grab a faster XP processor, they are rather inexpensive now and see how that does for performance. You'll also see performance jump if you get a new graphics card too. Don't even think about a 9600Pro, go with an nVidia 6600/6600 GT at that price point. It's the king of the mainstream market for a reason. Memory is always nice to have but I'd get a gig only after you upgrade the first 2. If you simply must have a 9600 get a 256 version with 8 pipes. I'd still go with a 6600 personally.

I know we have some tech savvy people here. I have an A7N8X-E Deluxe Motherboard with a nice Thermaltake power supply now and am looking for the next piece of my system to upgrade. Can someone give recommendations on what they would do next to get the best improvement to performance? Mostly this would be to improve performance in general and also in WoW and Half Life 2.
AMD XP 2400+ upgrade to a AMD XP 3200+ Radeon 9000 (non pro) to a Radeon 9600 Pro (or better... I have $200 to spend) 512M PC2100 RAM (2 sticks of 256M) - 1G PC3200 RAM (2 Sticks of 512M)
Also is it better to get a 256M 9600 Pro or a 128M 9700 Pro? 8 pipes vs 4 with more memory?
Thanks, Bothersome
