New Star Wars RTS Game

TheForce.Net (thanks Ant and VE3D) has details on plans for Star Wars: An Empire at War, a new real-time strategy game set in the Star Wars universe in the works at Petroglyph. The info, from the latest print issue of PC Zone UK, describes a HomeWorld style of play with space combat in addition to ground battles.

I always wished they had removed that idiotic vulenerability in the Star Destroyers.

I mean yeah, its cool and all to do the exact same thing that happened in the movie...rebel strafes a shield tower, it blows up, instantly cut to the bridge where the officers complain about the shields going down.

sure it gives you a warm fuzzy movie feeling, but it totally makes SDs lame and unimpressive, especially if you really can take one down in 5 mins.

Considering the Y-Wing could take out the SD in 5 mins tops is an issue.

Immersion wise JtL is kinda cool. To actually stand in the cockpit and see everything is very impressive, or go run and man the turrets or run around the ship and make repairs, but that's about it. There is a god aweful amount of tweaking that needs to be done to it, and there is things you have to do on the ground, so you can't just play in space, you have to deal with the ground game as well. But it's not enough for me to want to go back to SWG. Most tactics for destroying ships is either get inside them, or directly behind them, like for example you can do 2 quick strafing runs to take out the SD shield generators, duck behind the engines for your shields to recharge, then swing back around and get under the nose of the bridge and take little if no damage. Blow the bridge, then haul ass out of range of the explosion, watch the fireworks and wait 5 mins for another one to respawn. It just feels so tact'd on it's not even funny. Not to mention when upgrading things like engines on the Y-wing the ones your use to seeing in every SW movie etc look like the nacelles off TOS Enterprise. In the long run I think it would have been alot better to have a MMORPG version of Xwing, more simular in respects to Planetside and Freelancer.

I did beta for SWG ages ago, but didn't buy the game afterwards

aside from the Y-wing issue, how is JtL overall?

I just keep envisioning everyone and their dog running around in Millenium Falcon wannabe ships or Slave 1 copycats. nothing ruins immersion more for me than shit like that....the yt 1300 was supposed to be this junkheap (that no one would normally want to own) that han just upgraded to all holy hell.

seeing everyone trying to copy that would just annoy me to no end

Multi piloting a ship with human gunners is fun, but JtL is so messed up it's not even funny. A single Y-wing with a gunner can take out a Star Destroyer. I did a trial for it thinking of going back for JtL, and surprisngly alot of people only do SWG for the Space addon.

you could do that with a y-wing in the original X-wing game too....there was one of the historical missions where once you mopped up the tie escorts and otherwise completed the mission, you could stick around and strafe at the SD until its shields went down (or if you had saved your torps, you could take out the shield towers) once the shields dropped, a few hits with the ion cannons silenced the SD's turbolasers, at which point you could just park your ship and hold down the fire button until dead.

someone needs to pay larry holland an obscene amount of money to make a new sim, hell i'd even tolerate including the Ep. 1-3 ships, were holland involved

they were holding off due to the JtL expansion, which is nice for what is it, but it's no way shape nor form anything like any of the Xwing games.

And I've had my Xwing Alliance CD sitting here on my desk for a while just waiting for me to reinstall it, but at the same time I want something better. Then again I could take out anything in the Cortana, just fly parallel to anything and let the auto cannons blow the crap out of everything, and throw all the power into the engines.

34. Why no new space sims anyway? Jan 3, 2005, 18:16 Oberiko

It seems odd to me that Star Wars spaceSims, with obvious demand I've been seeing for it, aren't being made.

Did the TIE Fighter series not sell well or something? Otherwise, I can't figure out why Lucas would pass on what seems to me to be an almost garaunteed hit.

Gimme 'Xwing vs Tie fighter: Alliance' with updated gfx and I'll be your loveslave for a year.
If they had added that as the Jump to Lightspeed expansion for SWG, I'd have gotten an account (but then again, if they'd just added the first Tie Fighter as the JtL expansion, I'd have gotten an account :P).

Man, they could just take the first XvsT qand update the gfx and people would spend the full price on it...best power management in a space-sim evar (full aft shields!)

Oh, man, I'm turning sad at the thought of what could have been: manning a Falcon-lookalike with a couple of pals using the XvsT flight dynamic with DX9 gfx, with a full working and walkabout-able interior, blasting the enemy with guns and turrets, then landing on Tatooine and kicking back in the cantina.

*sniff*: for what SWG (+JtL) could have been

And me being a fanboi of SW? Eh... yes and no. There have been some SW games I would defend to the bitter end, and others I would deny that ever existed. Do I do it cause I like Star Wars? No. I do it cause they are great games that happen to be set in the Star Wars Universe.

And I firmly beleive that no game will ever have as much of an effect on me due to a plot twist as KOTOR did. Bioware pretty much ruined every other plot twist that will ever comeout in any other game. DAMN YOU BIOWARE!!

But Lucasarts is FINALLY getting smart and realizing that they just can't make good games anymore and are givening them out to other studios, which is fine by me.

But again I'd pay 100 bucks for another Xwing Title, perferably simular to Alliance but the ability to actually choose your ship from a bunch of ships.

Not to mention the Tools just came out for Battlefront so the big maps with lots of vehicles are being made.

This is just on the PC as that's all that's worth playing...
Good Star Wars games:
X-wing and all direct successors (Tie fighter, alliance, etc)
Dark Forces and all it's progeny.

Bad Star Wars games:
Anything that is even remotely inferred to be a "strategy" title.

Mediocre Star Wars games:
Anything that is even remotely inferred to be "adventure"

Now, if they just took the Generals engine from EA, made it a star wars game and added some cool game modes involving jedi, made the maps 10x larger and had space tile sets. I think it'd be a good game.

Oh, I also liked Rebellion. It was just one of those games that I enjoyed despite its hideous flaws. I was such a star wars fan that I could tolerate the fact that it was really a game in the new "windows opening/closing" genre.

There have been a lot of good SW games (many better than the new movies) but with so many bad ones its hard not to be pessimistic.

So why don't a few of you shut your pie holes and wait for some video/screenshots/demo of the game first before making such assanine comments.

Wow, you're one dedicated fanatical fanboy enthusiast.

20. Yea, I know, you're oh so much better than me. Apparently not good enough to realize I was being somewhat facetious to the people whining about ripoffs, but oh well, no one's perfect. But hey, you can work on that.

And if that doesn't console you, how about "I don't care."

(I actually liked every game I mentioned, besides FF and DW. Why I would mock them is beyond me)

22. You mean the one that goes from adventure to side scroller to RPG? I had always thought the exact opposite, that everyone hated it, or at least didn't like it compared to the first one. It's not too bad of a game when judged on it's own, but if that were the first in the series, I'd think we wouldn't have Ocarina of Time today.

what ever happened to the rule that if you used a new engine, it was a sequel, if you used the same engine, it was an expansion pack.

sorry, but Jedi Academy should have been an expansion.

with the exception of Wing Commander 3 and 4, all of the Wing Commander games were radically different from each other in terms of game play.

as much as I love KOTOR, I take a look at the screenshots of Kotor2 and I think..."how the hell do they get away with charging full price when this should be a cheap expansion pack"

its the same game, just new story. I know that qualifies as a sequel in the movies, but these arent the movies folks, these are games.

Um Sponge your a f'ing idiot.

KOTOR and Final Fantasy are nothing alike. Oh wait unless you count the time Revan Summoned Darth Exar Kun who's summoning animation took 10 mins.

And there is a diffrence between clone and sequal. Of course Doom 3 is a clone of doom 1, it's another game in the series ya moron.
