Q3A Source Release Delay

As noted on John Carmack's new overloaded blog (thanks Frans), plans to release the source code for Quake III Arena under the GPL have been delayed by a new licensing agreement. Here's the deal as can be found on LinuxGames:

I intended to release the Q3 source under the GPL by the end of 2004, but we had another large technology licensing deal go through, and it would be poor form to make the source public a few months after a company paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for full rights to it. True, being public under the GPL isnít the same as having a royalty free license without the need to disclose the source, but Iím pretty sure there would be some hard feelings.

Previous source code releases were held up until the last commercial license of the technology shipped, but with the evolving nature of game engines today, it is a lot less clear. There are still bits of early Quake code in Half Life 2, and the remaining licensees of Q3 technology intend to continue their internal developments along similar lines, so there probably wonít be nearly as sharp a cutoff as before. I am still committed to making as much source public as I can, and I wonít wait until the titles from the latest deal have actually shipped, but it is still going to be a little while before I feel comfortable doing the release.

Oh you're not done.

But since you like sexual fantasies, here's one for you. Let's make up & be friends. I can come over to your place & jack you off...

.
.
.
.
.
.
...with a cheese grater!

At any rate, you think that you are baiting me? You are plainly wrong you brainless fuckstain. The truth of it is that I've had a running bet with someone that you would continue to post & I've made quite a little bit of money off you. The person I was betting specifically said that "No one is that stupid Zeph. Anyone, and I mean, anyone would back down & just ignore you if you really insulted them & completely embarrassed them in front of their community. They'd say one thing & leave it alone. Everyone knows that the winner is the person who just walks away."

Ah, but he did not realize what I realized. You truly are that stupid. You cannot help yourself. The funniest thing to me is that you actually think you outdid me with the insults. To me that is just gravy on the dinner of winning this bet. Of course, now that I've mentioned the bet, the deal is off & I can't make any more money. But I just thought it would be so much fun to tell you that it was not me that was being led on a leash, it was you; AND I WAS MAKING MONEY WHILE I FUCKED YOU UP THE ASS WITH MY INSULT JACKHAMMER!

Oh well, maybe you can make some money too. Go home & push your daddy's lovehole & earn your weekly allowance, you stupid little dillhole, spanky ass, small-dicked, insignificant dried up band fanboy bitch.

You can do better than that, Zeph.

Your posts are all the same. You bullshit for a bit and then you detail another sexual fantasy...

You wanted to troll, so why aren't you trolling? Where's your ego? You know how you'd boast about your car and all the neat stuff you owned? Your Creston fetish? Or your silly assed Diablo story that apparently gave you a hard on? I'm not seeing any of that here. When I shovel your own shit back at you, you really back down. You've let Grandpa John down in a big way.

Granted, we didn't give a fuck about any of your shit. We saw your name, and skipped right over your posts. So now's your chance. I'm giving Zeph the troll center stage. You wanted attention, now do something with it...

And once again, you didn't answer the question...the fact that you've dodged it multiple times now is pretty telling in itself.

Nope, I didn't dodge it. I spoke about it the first time you brought it up. But like I said, sub100 IQ. You were just too stupid to see it.

Basically, I would be quite happy if your mother got raped with a nail-spiked baseball bat, got run over with a car 55 times, and they raped her meatpile again.

(If it makes you feel any better, they can even be nine-inch nails.)

Your trolling is really going downhill fast. I expected (a lot) more from you. Tell me about your great fan fiction and your hard on for rape. That's pretty fucked up, but like I said, I expected that from you. You wanted center stage, so troll away.

Oh, and your photos are SO cool. I bet Grandpa John is really proud of what a troll you turned out to be. How are those selling BTW? Will Grandpa John be eating ramen noodles tonight?

And once again, you didn't answer the question...the fact that you've dodged it multiple times now is pretty telling in itself.

I'm not dodging shit. I wish I did rape a girl. I wish I did murder people. I wish I did rob banks. But I didn't. I did do some things that were pretty terrible in my life, but who hasn't.

Anyway, why don't you just admit when you've been completely overwhelmed by my abilites to insult you. I got you so riled up & had to go look up my name on google. I got you so pissed off, you looked at whatever is out there on Zephalephelah for however long it took, trying to dig something up. Wow, I sure got under your skin huh?

Tell you what, you go home now & lick the yellowish green cottage cheese consistency yeast infection from your whore mother's cunt. At least you can do some things well in this world. And she needs a bath from you anyway. You can fuck her while your at it, although she might charge you for that. Anyway, please do me a favor & kindly fuck off. Thanks!

Oh, cmon Zeph! Give us some of that classic fan fiction! Tell us about Zepha-fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-llamadonkeypigfucker and his amazing adventures against the e-vile Diablo! Whoo! I bet it's exciting! Let me guess! You RAPE Diablo in the book, right? I know, I know, it's not much of a surprise, but it is YOU we're talking about here...

So, seriously, did you rape a girl? You keep dodging that one.

I don't give a shit that I'm an ass. I'd rather be a smart ass than a dumb fuck.

Also, I told you that those pics were family & you're a stupid little cockfag for messing with it. I really don't give a shit what you think you piece of dried cum from your whore mother's bed.

No, I didn't write television. There was no sex in the book. But I do have a lot of fantasies.

You see nin, you're about as useful as a booger on some homeless beggar's finger. If you died tomorrow, no one would give a fuck about it. Someone a few months later might say, "haven't seen nin in awhile", and that's about it. You see, no one gives a shit at all about you. Funny how that works.

Please do us all a favor and die & become the past! Thanks.

Wow, you didn't even deny it. So, did you rape a girl?

Do you write Star Trek fan fiction also? Or how about X-Files? I'm sure fan fiction is a blast for you, and allows you to act out all of your sexual fantasies. And judging by your posts, you seem to have a lot of those.

You see Zeph, when you're an ass, other people tend to treat you the same...it's funny how that works.

Like I said, sub100 IQ.

Anyone can google. But your find locates a few pathetic insults from cry baby bitches like yourself that come up with lame insults about my family, but then fail to see that someone has actually found the story I wrote for Diablo2. It's probably at your local Bookstore, if you know what a bookstore is, you dumb ass cretin floundering in your own feces. And do you know what they say about that story, you half-witted waste of human skin? Brilliant! I guess I don't fall on your side of the IQ scale after all you pathetic little piece of dried cum from your whore mother's bedspread. But thanks for proving my own point about you. You truly are worthy of nothing more than my toenail clippings and the shit from my ass when I got liquid chunky on the menu.

p.s. Go find a new band. Nine Inch Nails is yesterday's music & it's about as washed up and useless to the world as you are. They haven't done shit in such a long time most of the bitches that come to these forums don't know them at all. nin is the past! You live in the past! Please do us all a favor and die & become the past! Thanks.

Some great quotes from Zeph's web site:

"This jackass (zephalephelah) is an admitted rapist! He's admitted it on a discussion forum!

And here's another:

Is the cutie in the graduation pictures the one you said enjoyed getting raped? Or is she too old for you?

Yeah, you're fucking brilliant, dude. AH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

You're so dumb, you're adorable.

Let's look at the facts, shall we?

Fact: Average IQ = 100.

Fact: Because there is an average, it is safe to say that there are people in the world who are above average. People like me who understand the most basic things about a gaming engine when I'm on a gaming forum. There are even people with genius IQ levels of 130.

Fact: Because there are IQs as high & even higher than 130; it stands to logic that there has to be people with IQs far below the average. That's where you come in. And we love you for it. Thanks nin. Thanks for making all the rest of us look that much better.

certainly easier to overhaul an existing, working engine than create one from scratch
I would think it would be the exact opposite, but I don't code either.

Surely designing a engine from scratch with certain features in mind would be easier than trying to add more and more features to an existing engine to allow it to do something it wasn't originally designed to do.

I remember the Infinity engine, and either BIS or Bioware saying they couldn't add much more to it w/o the whole thing imploding...think that was BIS, and around the time IWD2 came out...

OMG, I've seen you post some completely mindless bullshit before NIN, but this really takes the cake.

The Doom3 engine wasn't merely made for Doom3; it was made as a gaming engine for which Doom3 was merely the working title of the game. Now, Quake4 will use it, and that game will be different, allowing for multiplayer servers instead of PtP clients and brighter levels. It's also been proven that Doom3 has no discernable size limit, so whatever computers are capable of handling, the engine can handle it. So 5 years from now when the Doom3 engine is still among the most powerful engines on the market, people will be willing to spend a great deal of money for it.

Why? Because it is most of the work. Creating an engine is by far the largest chunk of time-consuming code programming that there can possibly be. It is *ALWAYS* easier to alter an existing code to fit your requirements rather than build a brand new game engine from scratch. Why do you think that HL2 has code pieces from Quake in it? It was far easier to base their Source engine off what they had in Half-Life to reinvent the wheel. Doom3 certainly has Quake in it, at least in the sense that John Carmack made conscious choices to build in such basic things as dynamic lighting. It has Quake 2 & 3 in it as well, in that Carmack improved what he already knew. But almost no one else in the industry has a valid game engine like Crytek or Serious.

If you wanted to make a brand new game that had the capability to handle creatures with hundreds of thousands of polygons each, which could provide for environments to appear to swell from the shockwave of Fuel-air bomb bursts, that could track shadows in real-time so that as the sun moved across the sky and day went to night that the shadows would move, then you would have to look no further than the Doom3 engine. The Doom3 engine can handle a million polygons per creature, tank, object, by bump-mapping it & pulling the polygons out from under it like pulling a table cloth from a table may leave the settings in place. How would you possibly code all this yourself with no prior knowledge in creating an engine yourself? You would waste years of time with a team of people doing what is already done.

You sir have just won the 2005 Stupidity Award, and the year has barely even begun.

HL1's engine is the Quake engine heavily modified, not Quake 2s engine.

And I probably should have mentioned that when I look at when game engines are done and how long it takes to create the artwork, models, world, story etc I'm not sure that even in the cutting edge world of game development the engine is the limiting factor.
