I'll probably wind up getting it anyway if its as good as it sounds. There's all kinds of cool stuff to unlock, including new areas to fight in, and story mode. In story mode, you have to beat your opponent in certain ways (no ring outs, only air hits, etc.) and in turn you get points that you spend to unlock MORE weapons for your character to use. Each character has like 12 extra weapons to unlock...
I'm pretty sure you'll like it, but yeah, a rental might be in order, just to be safe...

Thanks again for all the help. Sounds like I'll have to try renting first to be safe. I'll probably wind up getting it anyway if its as good as it sounds. I'll just have to label that one "Dad's Game" which means my kid will really want to play it!

Thanks for the tip! Last question, is "Soul Calibur 2" suitable for a soon to be 7 year old? He knows the difference between real and cartoon violence I just want to avoid any super over the top violence which will likely upset the wife who fears I'm corrupting his little mind.
Err...that's a tough one. As said below, there's no blood spurting everywhere, but people do get hit upside the head, kicked, etc...every character has a different weapon.
It's not Mortal Kombat, but it sure isn't Pokemon, either.
Maybe you could rent it from a movie rental place and try it out when he's asleep?
It is a great game, but you bring up an excellent point...
edit: I should also mention I played it on the gamecube, but other than one character, it and the xbox versions are almost identical, graphically (though the xbox may have better sound).
edit again: Oh, and (as stated below) if Burnout3 is as good as 2 (and I suspect it's better), that's a great one also...us gamecube owners got robbed on B3...

There aren't any decapitations or dismemberments or anything. But the characters are pretty realistic looking. It's not like Street Figher and its ilk.
That aside, it's an absolutely excellent game, and even if you don't let him play it, you'd be sure to like it enough yourself. And it's damn cheap right now, too. At least, on the other two consoles it's only $20 or so.

I'm still going to suggest (more like insist) that you pickup Burnout 3, but you probably shouldn't ever let him acquire a driver's license after having played that for 10 years.. which he will. Probably in a single sitting

Thanks for the tip! Last question, is "Soul Calibur 2" suitable for a soon to be 7 year old? That's a tough question to answer. I have the game. I also have a 6.5 YO. I wouldn't let him play it.
I enjoy the game
My 6.5 YO kid is pretty level headed, it's the 4 and 3 YO I worry about.
Good luck,

Also, the Dead or Alive series seems to be well liked, though I never cared for it...

That's brutal! You do get a holiday in there somewhere don't you? We 'shut down' between Christmas and New Years. Of course that really means that myself and the lead project manager / estimator / owner are in the office with no laborers / engineers / sales reps to bother us.
We get an amazing amount of work done working just half days that week.
At the least I hope they pay you overtime for it. I'm salaried but I do just fine, thanks for the concern.

I'm off 'till Tuesday. Just got back from golf, lunch, and beers with my dad on a beautiful day. Played like crap until going birdie, par, birdie on the last three holes. These are days I wanted to take off in the fall but couldn't so I'm "forced" to take them now.
Is it too late for a nap?

About to leave work (I think), and we're off to my father-in-law's for Christmas. Hope everyone here has a good one, and stop getting sick! Have a safe drive. Happy holidays to you and Heather!

The only one working tomorrow My one and only vacation this year (besides a 4-day weekend for our anniversary) is tomorrow through New Years' - back at work on the 3rd.
I usually take 1-2 weeks of around Christmas as my vacation. Too darn busy the rest of the year. Trying to finish a draft of a bridge foundation investigation before I bail for the day, so I probably won't be leaving early.

After 2 years of his begging me, I finally broke down and got my kid an XBox this year for Christmas and was wondering what were some of the better fighting games available? I'll still do most of my gaming on the PC but it would be nice to a have good 2-player fighting game in which I could virtually kick my kid's butt. Thanks.

The only one working tomorrow Nope, I have my regular 6-230 shift. I'd be working on Friday, too, if I hadn't taken it as a vacation day already. We have Monday & Tuesday off next week, though, statuatory.
