Out of the Blue

Today is the eleventh anniversary of the release of the DOOM shareware, for me as well as many others, a life-altering experience. To this day, skulking through the darkened computer maze near the beginning of the game is still one of my most memorable gaming experiences ever.

11. Flashblock updated Dec 10, 2004, 10:09 Zathrus

For everyone running Firefox that has the Flashblock (previously click-to-view flash) extension installed -- there's a new version available that has whitelist support. http://flashblock.mozdev.org (I dunno why, but it's not on the update.mozilla.org extension list).

The whitelist is a pretty cool deal if you surf to any sites that use flash a lot.

I know a lot of people use AdBlock, but I find Flashblock to be a whole lot more convienent to use. No need to go muck with a config and reload the page. The two play nice together too.

my newly elected HOA of my new neighborhood meeting was held

You live in a neighborhood nice enough to have a homeowners association?

I'm jealous. You rich bastard.

FYI - here in MN almost all newer 'hoods have HOA, and they suck. Don't be jealous, they are a nightmare!

8. Doomed Dec 10, 2004, 09:44 terrapin

The first I saw of Doom was my cousin playing the first level of Episode 3: Inferno. He'd gone to the shop to buy an adventure game we both wanted to play, seen Doom on a demo PC, and came home with that instead. I was mildly irritated with him for getting the wrong game for about 30 seconds. So yeah, I missed the shareware, but not by too much.

I loved all three Eps of the original Doom. Doom 2 never matched it, IMHO. In fact the only single-player shooters that have got anywhere near that original Doom experience for me have been Quake 1, Half-Life and Half-Life 2. It just had a strange unrealistic realism that was quite uncanny.

For me too.

My life after doom went like this. Love game so much design some levels. Get good reviews of levels. Realise I'm not bad at designing. Apply for Architecture degree. Accepted. Now working in architecture firm, do modelling, rendering, graphics, and of course, designing. All started from doom :).

Game is still fun to play.

My doom levels are here --> http://www.users.on.net/~walkert/shawns3d/d2_1.php (almost ten years old, yes, but you know, what the hay)

Blue,

I feel compelled to write and let you know that I was recently promoted at work. And as such, I have been extremely busy. Therefore, yesterday, 12-09-2004, I was so busy that I did not have time to visit your site, and admittedly, I also forgot for being so busy. Then when I got home, my newly elected HOA of my new neighborhood meeting was held, and so I was tired when I got home at 11.
Please excuse my absence.

THANKS!

"We'll all be old men, playing FPS games over the lan, confined to our beds, and screaming "SUCK IT DOWN BITCH!"

And I was going to post how worried I was that once video game analysis becomes a full-time profession and has its own college degrees, professors will say that DOOM's shotgun brought the visceral "pump" into adolescent masterbatory fantasy. But we do underestimate the longevity of such things...

It's kind of scary that decades from now, someone will state how popular and genre-defining such a primitive and "violent" game was.

Are you kidding? It'll be awesome! Why? Because no matter what nursing home we all end up it, it'll have it's own lan!!! We'll all be old men, playing FPS games over the lan, confined to our beds, and screaming "SUCK IT DOWN BITCH!"

1. DOOM - Episode 1 Dec 10, 2004, 09:03 kanniballl

I only reallllly like the first episode (group of levels) in DOOM 1. Episode 2 was alright, but I hated 3. So, I could just sit there and play the shareware alllll day back then.

It was an awesome experience back then. It was either 2D scrollers, flight sims, or solitaire for me. Man, that takes me back.

It's kind of scary that decades from now, someone will state how popular and genre-defining such a primitive and "violent" game was.
