Out of the Blue

Today is the eleventh anniversary of the release of the DOOM shareware, for me as well as many others, a life-altering experience. To this day, skulking through the darkened computer maze near the beginning of the game is still one of my most memorable gaming experiences ever.

Stories of the Day: Food Running Low Aboard Space Station. It's only condiments in my space station too.
Santas accused of street brawl.
Kitten Survives 275-Mile Ride Next to Car Engine.
Science!: Tool use confirmed in monkeys.
Is It Time to Scrap SETI? Small moves, Ellie.
Scientists embed computation in a DNA crystal.
Images of the Day: Think Blue!
Dr. Fun.
Media of the Day: Apple - Trailers - Ong Bak. Thanks Bernard.
Auction of the Day: SALAD LETTUCE IN SHAPE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE! AMAZING!. Thanks Joe.
Follow-ups: Who's a silly boy then?
Thanks Mike Martinez and Ant.

Ok now this is totally random. And i mean really. Has nothing to do with the posts underneath.

Anyone heard the Clawfinger remixs of Sonne? The K.O and the T.K.O remix. Damn they are good, especially the K.O remix. The T.K.O is a bit more drum and bass/dancy (if you can have that of a rammstein song), and the K.O one just has so many things it rules. A light Aphex Twin i guess.

Anyway, randomness done. And yes, i am very very bored.

Hey, take a look a different version of the Ong Bak trailer off the japanese website, it shows a little more action and such:

Have I mentioned how much I love London?!
Powys is about 240 or so miles from London, and most of it is in Wales. It's the most rural place ever so the fact that there are multiple santas there at all is what's weird. Well that and the use of CS spray. Man thank God our cops don't have guns

This year yet! Holy smokes!
I wonder if Gearbox have asked them to drop the "Brotherhood in Arms" bit. There are a lot of confused mothers out there :).

yep - doom1 episode1, best part of any game ever. mind you, it's just too short...i finished it in 5:11. ftp://competn.doom2.net:8002/pub/compet-n/doom/movies/ep1-0511.zip , I think the URL is right, can't check at work, if you feel like reliving the old days and you're short on time :). plays back fine with prboom or original doom.exe.

(time doesn't include e1m8 - historical reasons, when doom running was first done, you couldn't time eXm8 levels, so it's not included under the rules. skip e1m8, it's dull as sticks.)

What many people don't realize when buying a home near a detention basin is that it is usually considered part of one of the lots. This means that the owner of the property is responsible for the appearance AND functionality of the basin. In 15 years when it is full of silt and needs to be dredged guess who gets to pay for it?

I briefly looked at a new home that had a drainage pipe in it. There were a number of reasons I chose not to go with it (neighborhood, insanely steep slope of land, the minor nit that the builder violated the spec of several main trusses made from engineered lumber, the center area in the basement that had exposed ground and the builder refused to pour cement over it... little things like that), but that wasn't really one of them. There were easements on the property to grant the county access to the drainage, and I don't know that the owner would've been responsible for dredging, but they certainly would be for upkeep of the land around it. And if it did backup, who knows how long it would take the county to come out and fix it.

Ok. In order to 100% prevent this you will need to find a perfectly flat piece of land and purchase the surrounding 24,630 acres in a circle. That will guarantee that nobody is in line of sight.

Well, actually I was able to accomplish this on only 2 acres of land. The house sits in the middle of a wooded lot surrounded by evergreen trees which gives year-round privacy from my one and only neighbor. While not quite the social outcast of a previous poster, I must admit that seclusion was one of the top deciding factors when I purchased my home. It's nice to go home and isolate yourself from the world at times. I'll go out if I want to socialize or I'll invite people to my house.

damn, the 1st 3 standing flips in the first 15 secs of the clip are completely effortless! most gymnasts would have to do those on a run.

Hey nice find! But I'm totally not exaggerating when I say that's nothing compared to some of the crazy shit he pulls off in Ong Bak (although he does run around on people's shoulders at one point). I'm telling you -- the dude is a complete beast.

Best part is that they show you all the best moves from multiple angles and in slow-mo.. it's super campy, but in a good way. Even though they have clearly rehearsed the hell out of the gags, you can see some of the guys he's wailing on wince just before he connects. Normally I would say that would ruin the effect, but in this case it's completely understandable

(have a sinking feeling they might edit some of the final confrontation out for the NA release though)

edit - Just dug up the Ong Bak VCD I bought over there woohoo! Gonna watch me some silliness! Subs are all in Khmer (which is hilarious for such a ra-ra-Thailand film), but senseless violence is - as they say in France - a universal language (can you tell I get a little excited when the topic of this film comes up?.. heh sorry)

a slick lawyer could successfully challenge that on mosquito/disease grounds

Given that the purpose of most of these areas is to control water runoff from developed areas, no, no they couldn't.

Zathrus is right - not a chance. They are part of the local land development control.

After working for a builder I don't think I will ever buy a house in a new development. Being a contractor makes you wary of everyone. Esp. other contractors

As Pete Seeger said in a song SO WELL so long ago...
-----
Little boxes, on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky,
Little boxes, Little boxes,
Little boxes all the same;

There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses all go to the university,
And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same.
And there's doctors, and there's lawyers, and business executives,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course and drink their martini dry,
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school,
And the children go to summer camp, and then to the university,
And they all get put in boxes, and they all come out the same.
And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family,
And they all get put in boxes, little boxes all the same.

There's a green one, and a pink one,
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

Yea the newer neighborhoods all have to have a "wetland"
a slick lawyer could successfully challenge that on mosquito/disease grounds.

I'd NEVER, repeat NEVER buy a house where that could ever come about. For that matter, why move into a neighborhood?

I'd live in a cardboard box in the forest, before I'd move into a neighborhood.

Apparently you are not bound by any financial concerns. Hard to get your mail delivered to that box you're in, isn't it?

Do you actually interact with people in the real world, or does that lack of privacy bug you, too?

did that for a while, now I pretty much only keep the rigs in use (2 - one for me and one for my wife). Got tired of storing them. It is neat to look at those old things, though....

I have a router so I always have 4 alive PC's, ATM my weakest is a dual p3 350, just a bonified HD now. I have been considering laminating some of the real old stuff for show, but I also want to set up an old rig and just mess around with it, do stuff I wouldnt dare do to my current hardware.

You can see your damn neighbors!! Doesn't anybody else hate that?

Ok. In order to 100% prevent this you will need to find a perfectly flat piece of land and purchase the surrounding 24,630 acres in a circle. That will guarantee that nobody is in line of sight. Of course, if there's a hill beyond your property line, they may once again be able to see you. So sorry.

That or just go live in a cave. Based on your post, I'd guess that's more appropriate.

I really CAN'T BELIEVE you fools just bought your own houses, and now are excited about other people telling you what you can do there. It's your HOUSE for christ's sake!!!! If this was your workplace, maybe someone could tell you what to do... but this is your damn HOUSE!!! IF you can't have privacy there, what next.

If I couldn't afford a place with some property around it, I'd live in a cardboard box in the forest, before I'd move into a neighborhood. How did you all lose the american dream?
