Remember I joked how it may have been an act of cruelty to watch the Giants game with the older Smurf when we were babysitting? Well obviously it was, and yesterday I got a phone call from him because he was in tears over the outcome of the game... it will take him a while to learn that losing is part of the game in sports. Of course I was in tears too, so I'm probably not the one to teach this lesson.

In response to the textbook discussion that has been taking place, one other thing you may want to do is consider older editions. For example, in a course that I teach, the latest edition of the textbook is $138, while the previous edition is only $15 (now that there's a new edition). The only difference between the two, however, is that in the older edition the illustrations are in black and white, whereas in the new edition, they are in color. And since you can't normally sell old editions back to the campus bookstore, people sell them used for less than a used copy of the current edition since they just want to get rid of them. So be sure to ask the person teaching the class if you can use an older edition - if so, you'll save a ton of money more on the cost of the book. The cost of textbooks are out of control. I thought about writing a textbook for my class, but I couldn't sleep at night knowing students, who are normally strapped as it is, were paying so much money for it. Tempting, though.
