Remember I joked how it may have been an act of cruelty to watch the Giants game with the older Smurf when we were babysitting? Well obviously it was, and yesterday I got a phone call from him because he was in tears over the outcome of the game... it will take him a while to learn that losing is part of the game in sports. Of course I was in tears too, so I'm probably not the one to teach this lesson.

13. HL 2 Ending and Predictions Dec 6, 2004, 11:30 ZigZang
 
Regarding the HL2 ending (detailed spoilers). . . SST:

Ok, I know this has probably been said a billion times, but after just finishing the game the ending is very abrupt. So here's what I think. . . . the ending is so abrupt that I think Valve is going to announce HL3 (or call it HL2: part II) quite shortly and that it will be available in less than 1 year.

I think Gabe and crew are pulling a "Kill Bill" manuver. I remember a year ago last summer when HL2 was first announced that the game was expected to be over 40 hours of play. Now granted they really weren't that far along in content development but I believe the script/story for HL2 is that long. In today's gaming world, it is increasingly acceptable to relase a AAA title with around 20 hours of play, Valve can essentially double its money AND "provide" more content to players in less time (ie. it just doesn't make sense to release installments of your franchise IP every 4-6 years when you can do it sooner).

Clearly nothing is resolved at the end of HL2 (and I'm not even sure Breen is dead though I think he is), but we've really not even TOUCHED the who's, what's and how's of the story. Valve are sneaky bastards (this is a good thing) and the way the game freeze frames at the end suggests Valve is executing a very specific and detailed plan, not to mention that to leave us hanging in this manner for 3 years for the followup is simply cruel and unusual punishment. That said Valve will wait long enough to prevent gamers from feeling "suckered" by buying the game twice, but in the end that is exactly what Valve plans to do. Personally I don't have an issue with that if they can somehow top what we've played so far AND give us another 20-25 hours of play.

Perhaps HL2: Part Deux will give us Team Fortress: Source for multiplay.

Also, I have to say how fucking cool the super-grav gun is. I giggled and laughed like a schoolgirl the entire time. It is the ultimate weapon. It will be a long time before whipping dudes around becomes boring IMO.

So that's it. Thoughts?
