DOOM Movie Update

Dark Horizons (thanks Ant) has a translated summary of a story form a Czech reporter who visited the DOOM movie set in Prague. The report outlines various aspects of how the movie's story will diverge from the game's. Here's a bit:

The story follows eight marines, teleported into a command centre of a secret base on a remote planet. There, they learn that something strange is happening and soon monsters start to appear. The monsters aren't from hell, but rather people mutated by some nasty super-virus although the monsters look very similar to those in the game.

...Producers claim that the film will be more of a horror than an action shooter.

There will be loads of shooting though, especially in the end where a large number of sequences will be shot purely in "first-person" perspective of the leading character (Karl Urban). The chainsaw and Bio Force Gun do appear in the film.

"This all the more reason Games should be made into CGI movies and not live action movies.

I mean give me an hour long movie like Flight of the Osiris from the Matrix animation/CGI and I'd be a happy camper."

They did this, it was called Final Fantasy, it was too Japanese to make money.

This may put the final nail in the coffin of the Doom franchise.

If there's any game that is so perfect for a movie, it has to be Deus Ex. You dont need to change any of the story or anything, the game played like you controlled the main character in a movie. Outstanding script, outstanding story line and brilliant plot twists. Perfect film really.

I probably won't watch this movie. Reason being it's not an 18. This film can only do justice to the game if there's bucketloads of violence, demons, archaic symbols etc etc.

Don't watch it. Ever. All the world knows you won't be missing anything anway. Refuse to watch the movie unless they add in enough HELL SPAWNED DEMONS and GRATUITOUS GORE so the rating gets pushed to XXX for VOILENCE. THAT is Doom.

The only hope is that they'll decide not to name it "Doom" after all, because it's nothing close to it.

No marine. No demons. No mars. No Doom. No point.

Red flags should go up when you see games based on movies or vice versa. They just depend on the name recognition to sell, then do a half ass job on the product.

Not that I really care, but HL would seem to be the best choice for a movie. I mean a Doom movie? Since when did Carmack ever make a game where he gave a crap about the story? Let alone one with a story compelling enough to be made into a movie.

Wait, I know what the doom movie will be like; 90 minutes of a black screen

Anyone remember that satan guy from the movie "Legend"? Well that is how cool the helldemons in this movie could have been, but NOOO we get stupid viral sh*t, probably because Hollywood thinks that is what everyone is currently afraid of because of terrorists.

I reckon its because the studio doesn't want to use too much religous imagery in case it offends middle america.

Damnitt. Its going to be another 15 years or so until we get a decent video game movie.

That's even worse if you consider how many games are perfectly suited for a "straight to movie" port, like the Metal Gear Solid series.
The first Mortal Kombat movie was also pretty close to the game (and I liked it although being kinda cheesy).

After seeing Aliens Versus Predator, and played Half-life 2 I've just given up on movies. I choose games.

This sounds like one of the worst movies ever. It's like making Saving Private Ryan where the Germans have been exchanged for Eskimos. It might be a good idea, but it is nothing to do with what it's based on.

Ending in FPS sounds VERY cool, hope they pull it off by not doing like that House of the dead movie where they put stuff from the video game in, it looked horrible and didn't fit in.

I'm looking forward to the main character, he seems like a cool guy and really fits the whole being a marine. What might be a problem is the other actors, that will be filling the positions for the other marines. I'm pretty sure they will have the black guy who is very funny, then the nervous guy, then the hardcore guy that is so extremely tough. Aliens have these people too, Predator had them and basically any other movie with a group of actors.

That the BFG isn't being called "Big Fucking Gun" I suspect have to do with the movie being rated PG-13 or so.

That the zombies or whatever will be a virus is somewhat annoying, in the games it's from hell or some weird dimension, but it's for sure not a virus.

Doom 3 has such a bare bones plot that can be summised in one sentence... And even then Hollywood can fuck it all up!

LOL!!!

They must of chnged it from HELL to a VIRUS due to ratings.. so they can maintain a pg-13 movie.

WHAT! They're TOTALLY throwing away the story! The Doom 3 story was unbelievable. Dramatic, moving, evocative. I CRIED when I killed that 76th demon in level 4. That's how much it moved me. And now they're throwing it all away.

Yes, I agree, the one good bit of this news is that they aren't turning it into some bullshit action smaction movie, but a horror film.

If I saw bullet time slow mo in the DOOM movie I think I'd lose it.

-The Half Elf

I meant they didn't turn the X-Men into space aliens. They were still mutants, so they didn't screw with the base source material much.

And what do you mean demons should be popping up everywhere? Didn't you read the news bit? There aren't going to BE any DEMONS from Hell.

In other words, after I see this movie, I'll still be waiting for the real "DOOM" movie.
