Half-Life 2 Deathmatch

A post on the HL2world Forums outlines the fairly simple method for getting a Half-Life 2 deathmatch server (as opposed to Counter-Strike Source) running (thanks sauron). This is unsupported and certain aspects of this are a bit wonky, for instance, there doesn't seem to be a Gordon Freeman model for this purpose. Here is the sequence of console commands they've worked out:

    net_start
    sv_lan 0
    deathmatch 1
    maxplayers (whatever you want)
    map (mapname)
    restart

It will add you to the master server and it works.

As I mentioned in that other long thread, I think Valve will give us this sometime in the next two months.


Valve is smart. You guys may say evil, but you can't deny smart. They know why HL had such lasting success - online play.

Valve first gave us HLDM. They gave us teamplay a few months later, TFc a few months after that, DMC a bunch of months after that, and CS became an official part sometime after that.

Essentially every major patch came with new online content. Getting it in waves like that kept you playing to figure it out, rather than getting it all at once and being overwhelmed. Having them be official meant EVERYONE had it and there would definitely be servers (except for DMC, which was already overwhelmed by CS.)

The biggest perk was that this kept the mod community going. Seems like most mods that get started die because they take longer to produce than a game lives. Why release something for a game no one is playing anymore? They have little incentive to go find and download the mod. With HL everyone kept playing Valve's new online play, so the lifespan Valve gave the game extended past the development of mods. Mods got released while the game was still hot, and further extended the lifespan.

Long ramble, but I think Valve will give us HL2DM. I think they might give us TF2. I think they'll give us something we aren't even thinking of. Without this the SDK is useless.

If they don't, they'll suffer the fate Doom 3 had. Sure, there are Doom 3 mods in development, but I doubt many will be released, and I really doubt any would have an impact. They'd have to be great upon first release to make an impact, otherwise they'll wither and die without anyone trying it. CS was pretty bad in beta 1 and beta 2, but the user base for HL was so large that the developers had incentive to keep plugging away until it was great.
