Out of the Blue

I know a lot of people are completing Half-Life 2 in a single diaper-clad marathon, but I am one to savor these things, so I am playing in more moderate stretches. One of the things that helps with that is being easily distracted.... I decided to see what Half-Life: Source looks like, and quickly transitioned to being analytical about the Source translation of the game, to enjoying the nostalgia of the renewed experience, to being caught up in gameplay. I ended up playing well past the resonance cascade (I still cracked up when Barney mutterered about wanting to get his hands on the guy responsible for this), and now have a saved game to go back to. It certainly reinforces my feelings about game design... even with the Source-engine enhancements, a lot of the visuals inspire a "wow, was this really old school state-of-the-art?" kind of reaction, but as the bard said, the play's the thing, and the play is still fresh today.

Pah, there was an urban legend that Jean Claude Van Damme and Lou Gossett jnr shared the role of the predator. (JCVD did actually play him for a couple of days but got fired/stormed off and was replaced by... by... Kevin somebody. Super tall dude.)

Now ironically I'd forgotten about Enemy Mine and actually really love that film, particularly for the Mickey Mouse exchange.

Thanks for the cast listing, Ray but the Vortigon has some fantastic dialogue if you just go talk to them... (awww shit now I have to figure out SST...)

SST:

if you talk to the Vortigon who installs your machine gun on the air boat he has a load of lines about Freeman's former killing spree against his people. I don't know if this is widely known of what but I thought it was a nice touch.)

I read a comment here about Lou Gossett jnr (who I have a soft spot for after his seminal performance in Predator)

WHAT?!

Are you thinking of Carl Weathers? Or (as Ray said) Enemy Mine?

I want whatever you're smoking, young man!

edit: And yeah, Lou got screwed...

As ever, this is all stolen from Prima's Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar official art book.

I was commenting on how Lou Gossett Jr. had the crappiest voice acting job. I mean this in terms of voice being acted rather than quality of the voice acting.

Doctor Eli VAnce = Robert Guillaume
Doctor Wallace Breen = Robert Culp
Judith Mossman = Michelle Forbes
Barney Calhoun = Michael Shapiro
G-Man = Michael Shapiro, too
Aly Vance = Merle Dandridge
Professor Isaac Kleiner = Harry S. Robbins

Meanwhile, the character that Lou Gosset Jr. plays???

The freaking Vortigaunts.
Not, mind you, that I would have said no to being a lowly headcrab.
Noting they like the Enemy Mine performance,
Ray

I purchased off Steam, so cannot verify for sure. But reports suggest the CD is required in the drive to play the game

Presumably this is a condition of the publisher not of Valve, who we can assume told them they didn't need to bother.

I read a comment here about Lou Gossett jnr (who I have a soft spot for after his seminal performance in Predator) so I cracked open my retail version of HL2 (to recap, I preordered but couldn't wait 24 hours to play so I hit Steam on Tuesday evening and was playing inside a couple of hours - impressed was I...) to check the credits in the booklet. There wasn't even a booklet. I don't know if this is universal but my UK standard DVD contains a DVD and a piece of paper with the controls printed on it. Again, to me at any rate, this suggests that nobody at Valve wanted to put together a booklet and the publisher wasn't going to - so no booklet. Now, like the rest of you, I've never read an instruction booklet in my life. Ever. Hardly. And if there's no instruction booklets and you have to keep a disc in the drive and it takes a trip into town to pick it up then why is anybody going to buy games in shops? It would take, perhaps, a 20% saving to sway the market I'd guess - and that's probably more than the publishers take. Curiously I paid more for my HL2 Silver (Steam) than for my std UK retail DVD. It's okay to say that buying via Steam is less than RRP but nobody pays RRP.

But, again, this isn't Valve cutting out the publisher, this is Valve becoming the publisher. And it's only what id were doing 10 years ago anyway (and Apogee and everyone else, and lots of others now for that matter.). Back then it was shareware and you at least got a chunk of the game before ponying up your readies (somebody sell them a dictionary...). I'm still not knocking Valve but obviously there's a bigger picture being painted here than anybody has apparently recognised yet.

Thinking I will do some HL2, then V:tM-B, and top it off with some MGS3,
Ray I do have to say MGS3 is particularly good.

Re: Sixis, and the batteries that aren't really there: SST: not in my game - one was in the slot, another was on the bed next to the slots and the other...... was under the f$%&king bathtub. It took me forever to find - I even walked through the next tunnel before realising just how ridiculous it would be to put a battery in the next level.:o Maybe my brain had melted, I got to that stage after a particularly marathon-esque stretch so the multiple batteries (I swear I checked the car!) were invisible. I wonder if you'd lose if you lobbed them all off the cliff?

SST about "batteries", but I'm neither confirming nor denying that there are "batteries" in Half-Life 2:

Battery location:

There are 4 batteries you can find, even though you need to find only 2.

bed bath car windmill

I thought the windmill one was ammo or something so I pulled it down and was like "wtf is this? what a waste piling unusable stuff on the windmill like that" before I found out that I needed to find the batteries... heh

To quote from bandirector’s last post.

Subject “=(2*53)+2 !”, with post number 108. See how it adds up so nice, just like Airwreck did with his post # 106.
