I'm sorry I just dont get the point of argueing an object of entertainment. If you receieve the entertainment why must it be pitted against other forms of entertainment, in the end you are just subjecting yourself to a diminished experience.
Why is arguing entertainment any different than arguing anything else? Exactly, it's not. As for the 'subjecting yourself to a diminished experience' thought, well, that is completely idiotic. I have had amazing experiences with games and movies when I went in expecting the worst. OTOH, sometimes believing whole heartedly in a single company/game can also boost your experience. I am willing to bet that the HL fanboy who bashed Doom3 constantly loved HL2 even more than the rest of us did. When you put all your eggs in one basket and it succeeds, you get a high that others couldn't possibly get.
And I'm tired of people already pulling the 'Doom3 and HL2 aren't comparable' argument. That is total bullshit. They are both FPS games with cutting edge graphics and highly touted singleplayer that were released within months of each other. I would not even consider either in a subcategory like FPS/RPG or some other neogaming crap (and no, D3 is
NOT a horror game in any sense of the word). How can you not consider them comparable? Just because they play differently (any two games do) or have slightly different goals (again, any two games do)does NOT mean that the two cannot be directly compared. By that rationale NO two games could be compared. And D4rkKnight, how would we possibly think of games if we could not compare them to something? By your line of reasoning, every game would be the best of it's kind because it would have no competition! Comparisons allow us to recognize good games from bad ones. If Mortyr were the only FPS ever released, we might all think it was the greatest thing ever. But, it's not, and thankfully, we don't. So, take your videogaming socialism elsewhere, because on the bluesnews forums, everything is decidedly
NOT created equal and we like it that way.
