As doom3 fanboy I'd like to flamebait by saying that the gfx are not impressive at all. Some of those under ground sewer areas are very well lit, as in lots of light and no light sources to be seen. Does Gordons suit mean he can see perfect daylight all the time? even underground and in tunnels?
As we all know from the HL2 movies and screenshots, the lighting sucks. Now I've see in the final version it's true.
I'm sort of torn.
GameHalf-Life 2 (as a game) is more fun than Doom 3 in my opinion. There's more going on here. Sure, some of the puzzles are annoying, but overall it's a fun experience. The whole environment is flowing with activity.
Doom 3 was very retitive (though mostly fun). Walk into a dark room and kill the baddies. Pickup the armor/health, which triggers more baddies to spawn behind you. Wash-rinse-repeat until you get to Hell.
TechnologyDoom 3 looks like it has a more advanced engine, but the game didn't do it justice. Most of the levels were in close quarters and really dark and made it hard to gauge the graphics at times. I know that's the nature of the game, but it doesn't really demonstrate what the engine is capable of.
It looked like there was real possibility in the Doom 3 engine. IT had decent physics and some interactivity in the environment, not to mention the lighting and other cool things it could do.
However, it runs pretty slow on current systems. In 6 months to a year, it will probably be running as fast as Half-Life 2 does now.
Half-Life 2's engine runs on slower machines and looks pretty good. I actually don't care too much about lighting and I ALWAYS turn shadows off or as low as I can. To me, they're neat but they slow down the performance and I'd rather play without them.
ConclusionI think Half-Life 2 definately wins in the gaming department, but tech-wise it's not as clear-cut. Had Doom 3 demonstrated more in their game, it might be the clear winner. However, in my opinion it inches it out only slightly.
