Ships Ahoy - Half-Life 2

As noted on Steam News Half-Life 2 is now officially available at retail stores throughout North America. Though Valve's highly anticipated sequel has been available early at some over-caffeinated stores (story), the online activation process is now underway, and copies of the game purchased at stores or online via Steam can now be unlocked by restarting Steam:

Half-Life 2 is available now for purchase and to play. Those who pre-purchased their copy via Steam may access the game by restarting Steam, then double-clicking on the Half-Life 2 icon in their Steam Games directory. To purchase your copy via Steam, get Steam now.

We hope you enjoy it!

1. Gas. Gas prices must have gone way way way down once the aliens took over because there is so much that at every corner of the city there are spare barrels of gas just sitting around. And this must make for a very dangerous world to live in as they tend to explode a lot... Even stranger the local police actually use them as bombs in some cases instead of good old grenades. Cool effect in the game but when you realize they are rolling barrels of gas at you to kill u, it's a little funny.

I never thought about it, but you are right. That is kinda weird. Although the barrels say 'Flammable', so there could be anything in them. I want to drive one of those troop transport vehicles that blasted the shite out of you at the beginning of the game. They made the OP mod for HL, can you imagine playing as a combine soldier? That would be friggin cool.

3. Hard Heads. Another thing on the hard level is the head shots seem a little tough! Funny that it takes 3 good shots right between the eyes before someone dies. And it takes about 5 shots right in the chest to take someone down otherwise.

I thought the very same thing, but I chalk it up to alien technology. If they can invent those cool wavy shields and force fields than it stands to reason they could come up with some sort of super body armor. And let's not forget that Gordon can take about 8 million bullets before he dies and he's in some lame science suit.

None of that took away from the game though. It just rocked from start to finish. I was not bored at all by the vehicle levels, only the dune esque antlion stuff. That got old REALLY fast. But the levels just got cooler and cooler. Time for me to try it on hard now.

This post is so close to 500, lets push it over the edge!

Things that make Half-life 2 a little weird...

2. Playing on hard level. Playing on hard level you may have noticed that you die...a lot. Well I do. What is kind of weird is the almost constant insta saves that happen while you play so when you die you can have it automatically reload about 2 seconds prior to death. This makes for some pretty pointless deaths as you are loaded back to points where you are about to die anyway.

3. Hard Heads. Another thing on the hard level is the head shots seem a little tough! Funny that it takes 3 good shots right between the eyes before someone dies. And it takes about 5 shots right in the chest to take someone down otherwise.

Well, rock, if you hadn't of damaged it watching too much MTV and taking all that ecstacy at those raves, you're imagination would have been excited by that quote.

If it wasn't the esctscy at the raves then maybe it was the Ritalin in grade school.

Either way, having an impaired imagination is like be dead but alive. Or maybe alive but dead.

In anycase, your own cliche "smoking" comment should have inspired a yawn in me, but I am not you, I live, you sleep. As evidenced by your own attempt at insulting me. Which you can't do anyway.

And so, my mind became active and having become active, it searched. This is key to your education, but I don't hold your potential in high regard and thus, only expect another yawn-type attempt at a response in return.

I love the whole atmosphere of the game. I loved playing on the spinning playground ride but I was pissed the slide was broken, there's probably another Steam conspiracy in there somewhere, like if you let Gabe Newell download all your porn Steam will unlock the slide.

Yeah, I went for the slide, too.

Well, this thread will not reach 500. A derek Smart thread just opened up sucking up all the negetive vibes and complaints

Well then let me take a break from my usual negative, totally justified, anti-Gabe Newell rant and say something about the game:

I'm still not that far, but god, what a game! I love the little devices that keep me moving forward. I love the little things I think of later, after I've exited an area and I think: I'll remember this for next time.

Minor spoiler I love feeding those exploding cans to the tentacle things, the first time I did it, I was like cool! Then I was chased into an area where I exploded the cans right away because I just had the cops dump a whole bunch of them on me so I'll remember that for next time

I love the whole atmosphere of the game. I loved playing on the spinning playground ride but I was pissed the slide was broken, there's probably another Steam conspiracy in there somewhere, like if you let Gabe Newell download all your porn Steam will unlock the slide.

I know, if Steam and Gabe "goddamn him to hell" Newell let me, I will be playing this game at least two more times.

The best game since Half-Life and the first game I know I will replay since Deus Ex Classic. (Luckily, I never bought Invisible War or else I would have spent all this great invective on that, well probably not, I would have probably just been disappointed, since Ion Storm wasn't Anexxing my hard drive).

Maple,

It is so sad to me that people think they need to smoke something to unleash their imaginations:

I think it will only encourage more and more people to be pirates. I used to believe in supporting the companies who made the entertainment I enjoyed but now I feel totally betrayed.

Considering Steam and the fact they can't run a message board, I'm beginning to think H-L2 was pirated from someone with talent and a sense of timing.

When UGO says Valve spent $40 million developing H-L2, well, first considering Valve's track record and all the Kool-Aid drinkers out here, I don't see any reason to believe that number. But if it is true, most of that money probably went to hit men to silence the real people who developed H-L2 and their families.

Probably, there were too many unburied bodies back in 9/2003 so they had to delay the game.

If CBS news or Michael Moore is reading this, I have the faked documents to prove all of my wild imaginings, or, at least I will once I finish faking them.

Everytime the lambda shows up in the game, that's a clue to where the body of one of the REAL developers of H-L2 is burried.

If you map the game map onto a 3-D model of Mandlebrot set 14-b you'll see it translates to a globe of the earth and the lambdas match the sites of newly constructed buildings within the last 2 years.

BTW, I just made all this crap up but its the zeitgeist, conspiracy theories are everywhere these days.

Well, we'll see. I wouldn't be surprised if someone finds a workaround for this too. But it surely would be nice if they manages to hinder pirating somewhat.

The game reminded me of Unreal the first time you step off the ship, the first time I was out in the square.

You're right - it was similar. I just stood there and looked around for a few minutes admiring the view.

The loading times are a bit long, but witha game this detailed, that probably couldn't be avoided.

Loving the little time I have every evening to play HL2!

kanniballl,

I'm with you on exploring the game. I've done this for years. This is the first game I have ever played that was like a big playground. I almost crapped my pants when I first learned you could "rocket jump" off of cars with the physics gun. I'm definately not one to power through a game like this, especially when the detail is so fantastic.

One of the things that kept hitting me over and over again was how the map designs really made me want to build my own maps. You can build almost anything in Source and not have to worry about size. One thing I always wanted to build was a huge sky scraper map, just for fun. Most engines I have tried it in just couldn't handle it. Source can.

Because of the physics and all the awesome entities in Source you could make an entire game of just puzzles. You could also have made complete games around the buggy and air boat.

I can't even begin to imagine all the awesome mods that will come from HL2.

To the guy who said this game was "average": I would LOVE to know what is considered "above average or excellent" for you, and why.

I've played all the major FPS games that have come out since DOOM 1, and I think this is by far the best single player FPS I've every played. The attention to detail is amazing. The boat and buggy scenes were awesome, and really underscored how dynamic Source is. The size/scale of things in this game is mind blowing, such as the train bridge level. I spent lots of time in different parts of the map just interacting with the world and trying stuff. When was the last time you played a game that gave you the freedom to solve the same situation so many different ways?

Someone else mentioned that they got lost and had to back track. This never happened to me, so I guess maybe you missed some clues along the way.

I could go on for days about why this game is the best in my opinion, and get a lot more specific, but I don't feel like writing a book on it today. If this game was average to you, then I'm afraid you are in for a lot of disappointment with gaming.

Looking things up on the wikipedia does not a dork make. (lol) Arguing with people over the incorrect use of the words disc and disk (because the wikipedia says so) does.

You may consider yourself a dork for playing video games and being interested in them, but this isn't 1990 any more. Video games are common for all walks of life these days. I personally am more into "extreme sports" and tuning German cars than video games, but that doesn't stop me from being a "regular" here.

As a side note: You would have to be a dork of the largest measure to notice (and then complain) that someone deviated from the wikipedia in the proper use of the word disk/disc. I mean Jesus, get out and get some sunlight on that near-transparent skin of yours. Try to find a women too. In all the years I've been doing this stuff, I have NEVER become that big of a geek. I'd have to kick my own ass for this one.

There are far dorkier things than looking up the usage of a term on wikipedia. Like be a bluesnews forum regular.
