That isn't enough. Look at NOFX (punk band been playing longer than you have been alive) they still do shows, but still make piss and vinegar for $$$. Also considred one of the best punk bands ever.
I am not young enough to be ok with your statement.
/edit: I am interested in yuor reply, sicne I later read you are in the punk industry. I know I made a blanket statement, equally as blanketed as yours. Assuming you are still speaking of indie game development as well, I'd say it is more than enough. The wealth of mods available for Half-Life and Battlefield 1942 alone should make it clear that indie game development is about passion. I don't believe those ppl are getting paid to make mods but they do it anyway, and we all benefit for their hard work at not cost. The good folks who made counter strike (I believe) profitted from it as well as the folks who made desert combat. So if you're saying that the love for the game isn't enough to drive ppl to make good indie games for free... I think you are wrong.

Hey dammit, I *AM* the Fuck Valve crowd, and I exist well enough!
It's like I said: If somebody gets it for my for Christmas (at absolutely no out of pocket cost to myself) I will have it. If not... oh well!
Regardless of the value of my principles, I will continue to stand by them and not endorse Valve Software. I can only hope that somewhere out there in the void of the world there exists another consumer (other than Ralph Nader) who will not stand for Valve's disregard for customer satisfaction.

Where will the funding come from?

Lol I wonder if the "Fuck Valve- I'm not buying it" crowd a) exist and, if they do, b) if they're willing to put all the BS thus far behind them and enjoy what is, IMO, the best FPS I have ever played.
Yes, they do exist and I'm sure they've been playing all day using the steam emulation hack that was mentioned. I guess they can have their cake and eat it too.

Sorry to those of you that can't set up Steam accounts or whatever. The game is awesome. People that call it "average" have no clue what an amazing game is (I'm sure they'd spew some crap about RTCW or some other mediocre FPS).
At any rate, more HL 2 for me.. |

"I can stay at home and play PC games for 18 hours a day, so I logged in at 7am to register my game, what is the problem?"
The problem is that there are cycles of internet activity, and LOTS of people are loading HL2 and Steam for the very first time, at the same time. Valves servers cannot handle the load and it is BULLSHIT. Three hours since I've installed that I can't play. Thanks?
Double your distribution network for release day.. for fucks sake.
I suppose I will play HL2 and Masqerade, reguardless of time. But i'm feeling kind of dumb for rushing to get a copy of HL2 early before they sold out.
I'd even run a hack, and reinstall later when I wanted to play online.

Its 3:54 PST...I activated succesfully with silver account last night at 12:01, starting playing at 12:12, and have absolutely loved the game. Played early this morning, then left for school and work, came back an hour ago and found that nothing was working and everyone was having a hissy fit.
I got some studying done, and tried about 40 times to get into Steam. Thankfully, I couldn't for the last hour, because I was able to finish studying for my midterm.
Just tried again and it went in. I made a copy of my blob file as suggested on another forum, so at least i can play in offline mode. Try it everybody!

"Sued on what grounds? Give me one legal claim you have. Anything. Just one. C'mon, I'm a lawyer, I can tell you how valid it is compared to your EULA.
On the grounds that I paid money to play Half-Life 2 not Steam.
As for the EULA, I never read those, I've already paid my money by the time I see it and so, why the fuck waste time reading it?
Beside, lawyers sue doctors for no reason all the time. I'm not a lawyer but my understanding is that in the U.S. anybody can sue anybody for any reason.
I would sue for bait and switch, I paid for Half-Life 2, not Steam. Even after all this bitching I still have no idea what steam is and I could care less. "
Please, jump off a cliff. You are exactly what's wrong with America you sue-happy moron. Let me guess, you live in the mid-west?

Good post. I hate your screen name, but good post. Quotable.
I checked with my PA today (Tuesday) to see if my Amazon pre-order had come in. I was burned out with work about 3 months ago and let everybody know I'd be off the week before and the week after my 43rd birthday on the 21st Novemeber. Nice timing, huh? It hadn't so I decided to try Steam since a spare CD key never goes to waste for LAN parties and so forth. I ordered the Silver package at 5:30PM GMT and started playing at 9:00PM GMT. That's with no pre-loads. I'm using a fairly standard cable modem setup. Clearly the problem is that too many people in the US are technologically advanced enough to use broadband instead of a publisher to get their games.
And all that said. Loving it. A little pissed off that crouching doesn't seem to help aiming a la Far Cry and everything else but fuck me, why can't id just ask Valve to design their games? HL2 isn't a pretty game by D3 standards but it is the current most important media happening. 10 years from now people will marvel that there was once a time when people would willingly sit still for 2 hours to feel entertained (flashbacks to my wife there...). It helps that non-interactive movies are costing more and more to make. Meanwhile the rest of the world thinks Halo 2 is important. Pah.

Finally finished reading through all those 280+ posts!
I restarted STEAM at 12:01AM and was ready to play at 12:14. Looks awesome with all that detail, and runs perfectly smooth at 1280x1024, maxed settings, on my A64 3200+ w/x800 pro. Somewhat lengthy loading in spite of my WD74 Raptor, but not too bad.
It has a somewhat "stiff", technical feel to it compared to Doom 3, which is much more organic IMHO. Can't really say I prefer either over the other, they're just different. Haven't played more than a couple of hours, but HL2 seems to have more enjoyable gameplay so far. Surroundings are really immersive and pretty!
Also too easy on medium difficulty, as someone pointed out earlier. But it makes for better sight-seeing
I've had a couple of in-game crashes so far, but both just to the desktop so I could fire up the game again immediately.
Will be fun to continue tonight when I come home, after the wife and 7 months old son get their share of me first
