Ships Ahoy - Half-Life 2

As noted on Steam News Half-Life 2 is now officially available at retail stores throughout North America. Though Valve's highly anticipated sequel has been available early at some over-caffeinated stores (story), the online activation process is now underway, and copies of the game purchased at stores or online via Steam can now be unlocked by restarting Steam:

Half-Life 2 is available now for purchase and to play. Those who pre-purchased their copy via Steam may access the game by restarting Steam, then double-clicking on the Half-Life 2 icon in their Steam Games directory. To purchase your copy via Steam, get Steam now.

We hope you enjoy it!

Haha sorry man I though you were raggin on me too. That's cool you know about them... yeah I don't know, a lot of people consider them "post punk" up there with the Theoretical Girls, Lydia Lynch, Gang of Four, and you know I don't want to list out of fear of being an elitist shit hehe. But, yeah, I don't know why any of them were and are considered post punk considering they were apart of the punk movement during th elate seventies. I guess it was just some people's punk movements were totally different than others.

I just hope I don't end up struggling with the whole Steam registration process.

Even if you do, it's worth it. All this mindless hyperbole is just scent-marking for the asshole-hunters.

Over $70 for a "steam"ing pile, ongoing wait to "unlock" files after just spending 20 minutes installing 5 CDs, and to top it all off, they don't even have the decency to throw in a chincy CD case.

This game better be good....

332. Steam can suck my ass! Nov 16, 2004, 20:09 Zephalephelah

I have to admit that this is by far the most bizaare thing I've ever seen in installation history. Even Windows never went this far in any of its versions.

Well, as I was writing this, it completed "unlocking" HL2. BUT WTF was all that about anyway? It took me a 1/2 to do this step. This was like installing the game twice. Others had even more horrible stories of time wasted when any other game you buy ends up being available the moment you validate the game with the key. STUPID!!!!!

Heroin, dude.., I'm on YOUR side. Check it, pilgrim. So why would you say:

I'm glad someone mentioned the Slits, but that's just the tip of the iceberg for "post-punk".

By what definition are The Slits post-punk? They're seminal low key punk. I think they were even in Jarman's Jubilee. I was 17 at the time and had a safety pin through my lip and a packet of bacon (green from corruption) fastened to my donkey jacket.

The Slits weren't a great band but they were a great live band. And, most importantly, they were a great punk band. I have no reason to belive that they're not all prim housewives now but that doesn't matter.

I picked up a copy of the Collector's Edition (wanted a single DVD) on my way to work. I'll be home and trying it later tonight. The screens/movies look awesome, and those that have been able to register successfully via Steam seem to have a lot of praise for the game.

I just hope I don't end up struggling with the whole Steam registration process.

Would someone who knows something about it, ie: if the publishers go away, how the games will get millions per game to create them?

And where, you clueless rebel, do you think the publishers got the money in the first place? There WAS a time when developers drove the industry when development cycles were measured in months not years. If you want to see an accurate portrayal of a publisher go watch your local production of The Merchant Of Venice. Now, think Shylock. Publisher. Without putting words in Heroin's mouth I think the point he's making is that if there aren't corporate carrots being offered then an industry will still survive based on the passion to create games, just like there are people making movies which will never be seen. (Part of that is because people honestly believe that making movies is a worthwhile endeavour. Regardless of the return. I don't think there is the same problem with games.)

Just to clarify, I like NOFX now I've heard about them but they're not punk. I have a million point two home and I'm more punk than they are. (Technically I have HALF a ... never marry...)

NOFX turned into that, but they were punk once. Not very good punk, but they were. You can argue they still are, success doesn't change that, but they haven't adapted much.

I prefer anything on Bridge 9, Hydra Head, Magic Bullet and Deathwish, inc.

Yes, you paid for Steam. Steam is part of the game. And, in case you haven't read any EULA lately, you don't even own the game, you own a license to run a game they own.

Well, I finally 'got in', and found out I didn't know my old password. The Retrieve Password function was horribly broken, so I went ahead and made a new account.

Unlocking files now, about four hours after I bought and installed the game. Not too sucsessful of a launch. Hope they do something about it for their next product.. or anyone else who tries this cockamamey downloading and resgistering scheme.

Haha production artist

Yes I know what goes into it, maybe if you had some ingeniuty you'd be able to figure it out yourself. It's not like I got to my position here thinking about what not do. Yeah I know NOFX too! I know Green Day, I know the Misfits, we do all of their shit, do you think I care about them? Hell no, their art is crap, and their music sucks (old Misfits rules though). I just got done doing a Green Day crew shirt for their NYC shows, it looks retarded, that's what they pay for.

Don't you guys get me started on REAL punk. I'm glad someone mentioned the Slits, but that's just the tip of the iceberg for "post-punk".

How did Green Day get there to be able to pay for crap? By doing it. With passion... then money came along. That's how it works chump.

If you think NOFX are a punk band then you just don't know what punk was. Honestly, I pity you. I am a punk sellout who chose money over liberty but christ alive I know exactly what I was giving up. To this day I can listen to anything you want and rock along to lyrics forged to hurt me, because lyrics don't hurt people, rocks do. Oh, real rocks, not rocks like kickin rocks.

NOFX aren't a band that hasn't sold out, they're a band nobody wanted to pay for. OTOH from what I've heard of them they appeal to my affluent middle class background so I'll probably buy a couple of albums. Just like all the other NOFX fans. Gosh darned it, they's such rebels...

NB: if you think you like punk and you've already listened to everything by the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned then it's time to listen to some real punk. First you should listen to The Slits. They're okay, but they're hard to find. That's the point. On your journey you will make your own choices.

NOFX are punk... laughable...like Justin Timberlake is Hip Hop...

I like Justim too...

HAHAHA! That is perfect that you bring up NOFX, considering I work at one of the companies that gives them major income. So try again.

Funny...cause I have met them on many occasions and had lunch with them.

I have the feeling (even after editing my post) that you have no idea WTF you are talking about when it comes to gaming and funding.

Would someone who knows something about it, ie: if the publishers go away, how the games will get millions per game to create them?

Thanks.

You "work" for them. What...in the mail room?

everybody here and I mean everybody without exceptions, who can't understand that people who can't access the game due to the steam mess, get really piss, worry me. there is no debating over this. folks who bought the game just as you, but aren't "allowed" to play it yet have all the reason and right to be utterly upset and bash valve&steam on that matter. not that most with a brain didn't see this coming, but yet one would assume that valve should have been prepared when they set out to make such a bold attempt of new distribution.
yes I was lucky enough, to get it all registered, authorized and unlocked early in the morning and I do love the game. nevertheless, steam leaves a bad taste behind
and I certainly feel for those who are still locked out. at this point, its encouraging cracks.

Hmmm... I'm checking my records for last week and since I could be without a job mentioning the actual numbers I can't mention the names, or the numbers. Let's just say that Fat Wrecks and obviously NOFX and Fat Mike are doing pretty well.

I didn't even buy the game until this morning. I already had a Steam account, logged in and sent my CC info. Started downloading about 8 AM, hit 100% about 6 PM. No unlocking or anything, I just clicked the game in Steam and I'm at the HL2 main menu.

Now I must resist playing until I've had dinner and have a few uninterruped hours.
