ATI PunkBuster Fix

Games hang using PunkBuster Online Gaming Servers (thanks Devicer) is an ATI support page offering downloads of a new CATALYST 4.12 Beta Release to address an issue with the recent version 4.11 CATALYST drivers that can cause the client end of certain online games to hang up due to a conflict with Even Balance's PunkBuster support.

Why does the point still stand?

Well in my case, it didn't fix anything in KOTOR. The 4.9->4.12b's didn't do anything.

I'm still using the 4.2 OGL core in the KOTOR directory to play the game, it works fine tho without any nasty problem. No crashes, no glitches, no funny errors.

"ATI, on the other hand, doesn't hack their drivers just so they get better 3dmarks."

Yeah, right... I remember they did the exact same thing not long ago. But who cares the business is rough. I just don't care for their poor QA. Not to mention their releasing shitty drivers over the past 18 months that constantly break features in one or more games I play.

Any one buy Thief Deadly Shadows to have the shadows alternate between mid-night and mid-day? ATI ruined that game for me. I got tired of the immersion being shattered by crappy drivers. So I went to the forums and tried some other drivers that screwed up several other older games I was also replay.

I own both ATI & Nvidia cards both are good products but I don't think anyone can denied ATIs poor record of releasing crappy drivers... why do you think they had such a hard time competing with 3dfx & Nvidia?

Until just a couple years ago they couldn't get their cards to run for shit because their driver support was terrible. Not until the 9700 series did they actually pull off some fairly decent drivers to go along with a great card.

Yeah, I think you're right on this - as I understand it, PunkBuster does periodic checks to see if you're using wallhacks, etc.

As a software developer, there's nothing worse than a bug that occurs on some machines, after an unspecified period of time, and is an interaction with another piece of software that the developers (rightly in this case) feel disinclined to provide exact technical information on. I've had similar problems in the past with software I've developed, and while I did nail down the problem eventually, it took a long time and a lot of hard work.

The stuff I develop is simple and high-level, especially compared to a graphics card driver, so I can easily see how this would happen.

Once you can readily reproduce a bug and trace through the code to find the issue, 95% of the battle is won. It's finding the causes that's hard, not fixing the effects.

Think about it the other way around -

I doubt it's a "punkbuster issue", more likely it's a "driver issue" that is exposed by PB's unusual activities - the driver code cant handle something that PB does. PB isnt exactly normal software either, it digs about in places most other software cant reach.

While I find it a tad absurd that either company can miss immediate and blatant problems with software used on many of the most popular multiplayer games, unless they do specifically playtest in online games with PB enabled they are likely to miss any such problems. There is little other software that might result in similar issues, Evenbalance are very secretive with their code and PB doesnt actually run unless you specifically activate it in the server - you cant just run around offline in a game supported by punkbuster in order to test for compatibility.

How does a Video driver fix punkbuster issues? Not to start a flame war or anything but I'm a devoted Nvidia person, but I just don't understand how the video card would break the anti cheating program, unless there was something the ati cards were rendering/not rendering that was anti-pb settings.

But that's the thing, the Doom 3 drivers said nothing about Doom 3

http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4547.html

ATI was providing an early version of CATALYST 4.9 to users interested in increasing performance of Doom 3.

The official CATALYST 4.9 drivers (WHQL certified) have since been released.

They were for Doom 3. They always said they were for Doom 3. I recall they came out before the official 4.8s. This is nothing new.

I'm showing about 5% increase in the HL2 VST over the 4.11s. This is with all options maxed, 2x AA 4x AF on a 9800 Pro 256 and a P4 OC'ed to 3.36.

Edit: That's at 1280*1024, getting ~53 fps.

Uh, it DID correct an error with KotOR. A rather significant one that caused numerous crashes. For me, at least, the fact that it also increased Doom 3 fps by a few points was a minor bonus.

ATI they did exactly that for Doom3, so somehow I dont think they have a problem with releasing a game-optimised beta driver and calling it just that.

But that's the thing, the Doom 3 drivers said nothing about Doom 3, they were released to "correct an error with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." I don't mind when ATI works out a performance boost(hell, I love it), but I just wish they'd come out and say it, instead of hiding behind BS excuses.

Yeah, and I remember seeing Halo on someone's 5600 ultra back before they released like 4 drivers to get it to run better ("25% better performance!"). The point? Both companies do this.

ATI, on the other hand, doesn't hack their drivers just so they get better 3dmarks.

I think its funny that us Nvidia users can laugh at all the shit you ATI morons have to do to get a few extra FPS out of your cards.

Wow saving money is great!

I'm just going to point out for others that this driver is for Win XP, it doesn't work on Win2k.

So I guess us Win2k people with 9800s will just have to live with an unoptimized 80 fps in CS:S for a while longer

I really dont know why anyone bothers to moan about a performance increase being chucked into a beta driver for free, are you being made worse off in some bizarre way?

I wonder if these driver's will help fix the memory error I get every time I play cs:source for more than 10 minutes. I have seen a lot of posts about it on the steam forums but yet to find a soulution that works. Not that worried about counter strike but I will be pissed if it happens in single player half life 2.
