Re: HL1: Source |

what really pissed me off is that I found out HL1: Source isn't even ready yet
Linkage? After I bought the silver steam package, it preloaded HL2 and CS: Source. It showes HL1: Source and DOD: Source in the coming soon list. I searched the steam forums and found out that HL1:S and DOD:S are not done and will be released on steam when they are ready.
Search the steam forums for "HL1 source preload" and see for yourself.
If you look at the list of things you get with each package on steam, you'll see that HL2, HL1:S, DOD:S all have a * by them. The * indicates that it will be available upon release. I and everyone else assumed that it was the same Nov. 16 release date as HL2, but HL1:S, DOD:S have their own separate release dates (which have yet to be determined).
What are modem users to do when they get home with that $80 CE box and realize that the extra games they were supposed to get must be downloaded. Broadband isn't available everywhere you know. I haven't seen the retail box, but the description on all the online retailers doesn't mention anywhere that HL1:S will have to be downloaded later. That's pretty lame if you ask me, unless they include a cupon or something to send in to receive a free HL1:S CD when it's ready.

Heh. Just fired up Steam to check, and it started updating Steam. I thought, hmm, could this be it?
No.
Just a simple update for foreign language versions. Nice way to tease there guys...

After all this time, you'd think that this must be the most stable and bug-free game ever released considering how much time they've wast...ummm, spent re-writing code to prevent the hackers from having a field day.
I'm expecting it to actually make my PC run faster and to up my DSL speed. Yup, it should be that clean and bug free.
Time to impress me, valve.

Let me get this straight, you're a lawyer who thinks things that are "probable" can be equated to things considered "standard"? You must have a really profitable practice there, bub.
Well, 3 out of 4 American homes have internet access. That's 204 million Americans out of 272 million Americans. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_access_in_the_United_States
A standard is the rule. If over 75% of American households have internet, I'd say they're the rule rather than the exception.
So yes, internet access is considered a standard for computing. Hell, most new computers COME with internet access now, if only for a year.
If you took out the homes that don't have computers at all, you'd be closer to 90% most likely. And if you took out homes that had computers that weren't capable of running HL2 you'd probably be closer to 95% or 98%.
Repeat after me, "internet access is standard in the US." Also, you've insulted me in every post, yet you called me full of teen angst? I've yet to let an angsty insult fly. Assuming, of course, you're the same guy that said it. I imagine so, not many people are denying that internet usage is standard.
And, as mentioned, it is too small a demographic and Valve really doesn't care if 1,000 people that want HL2 can't have it due to internet connectivity issues it if prevents 1,000,000 from pirating. This comment was edited on Nov 12, 17:39. |

I'm gonna wait until Christmas to play. That way all the authentication BS will have been worked out (hopefully) and the first round of patches will be available, and I'll have a Merry Christmas!

Let's make this perfectly clear:
If you do not have an Internet connection of some form or fashion for long enough to register HL2, then Valve doesn't really give a shit about your money. You are in too small of a demographic to change their sales even a fraction of a percentage.
The piracy protection offered by the validation vastly outweighs any such losses. Most likely by several orders of magnitude.

"Hi, I'm a lawyer that isn't throwing around meaningless insults and assumptions. Nice to own you.
Yes, it is standard. If you have a several thousand dollar computer capable of running HL2 you probably have an internet connection."

I figured out away to authorize my self early, I have been playing HL2 for the past 5 hours.
I already beat it…it is quite lame and obviously short if it only took me 5 hours (of boring play I might add) no real AI, just scripts. Graphics are nice, but every thing looks so fake. Bricks do not need 5 layers of specular mapping; bricks do not reflect light like tinfoil… damn fools. The game play is ok, if you like crap…ehh…whatever.
On my scale of 1 to 10 I give it a 4.5
Hey, I am being a silly little Troll today, I have not played it yet…remember kids don’t feed the trolls!
