It gets built into the Windows shell so all you have to do is right-click on a file to calculate the hash That's pretty sweet.
One thing I definitely like about Windows -- shell extensions. Must be a PITA to code though, there's not many of them out there.

Come to the dark side, SMA! SMA, the PC gamers lied to you - I am your father! Pound for pound, I think its lighting engine offers a lot more than the one found in Doom 3. There is some polish missing and slowdown pops up now and then (even in the introductory sequence, though, Bungie?!?,) but it is fun.
Play co-op; it is a total blast.
Even if my teammate is just an ammo cache that I jam the butt of my gun into when I need something.

I failed as a PC Gamer today. I'm now the owner of an XBOX and Halo 2. Shower all you want, you'll never be clean again. You know those movies where people scrub themselves raw and bleeding? Yeah that.

What's the easiest way to see the MD5 of a file? Here's another app for MD5, nin. It gets built into the Windows shell so all you have to do is right-click on a file to calculate the hash, or verify a hash by pasting in a string from a webpage or whatever. It's nice and quick, too. http://digestit.kennethballard.com/

More HL2... |

Well, the guy who posted the game early took it back, or so he says.
Long story, if ya wanna read: http://www.actiontrip.com/link.html?http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33790848
I'm gonna have to cry BS on this one...I just don't buy the following:
Someone I know received HL2 before its release date, and that person has just been called and asked to return that same game since it wasn't supposed to be sold. The person calling talked about getting a lot of heat from up high, mentioned that the game wouldn't work anyway, and offered the buyer 1/2 off the cost of the game, if he could bring it in this evening. The best part? He's already registered the key to his steam account! (assuming his whole story is true) Guess what happens to the person who buys his boxed copy again?

"What a waste." I know some Jewish people that might disagree with that statement. I think he meant on a grander scale. Hitler's existence, motives, and actions created the need for military action, I don't think anyone wants to debate that, but Hitler's actions resulted in the "waste" of millions of lives. Had he not come to power and been able to do what he did, millions of lives could have been saved. Millions of people could have lived "normal" lives instead of fleeing the plague of war, etc... |

| Looks legit to me, and no reason it wouldn't be. I mean, the game's been gold for almost a month now hasn't it? I think all we're waiting for now is the last few copies to ship off, so that global release thing can go down.. |

Actually, it appears that the boxed copy's game files are also encrypted. Hmm, I knew you had to go through Steam with the boxed copy, but I didn't even think that the boxed copy would be encrypted, too. Makes sense since it's like a more secure version of when id tried to do encrypted distribution. id's method failed because the local system controlled the decryption. Valve's method is secure because a remote server controls it. Of course once they unlock the game, all bets are off, but I think it's locked down tight enough until release that I retract my previous statement.

From the ve3d boards...
"HL2 requires activation and decryption through Steam before you can play. He may have been able to register his cd key in Steam, but he will not be able to play until we have turned on HL2." - PatrickM - Valve 2 important things to note there.
1, even if you buy retail, you'll be using steam. And you can't play until it's turned on in steam.
2, notice he didn't say the 16th!

Actually, it appears that the boxed copy's game files are also encrypted. After the guy on the Rage3D forums (which are now dead) installed his boxed copy the game appeared in the "coming soon" section of the Steam App just like the normal Steam copy. The forums are dead and I haven't seen anyone actually confirm that the files are identical, but it appears that they are.
If the boxed copys could be cracked I imagine the game would have been leaked already (ala Halo 2) as someone at a distribution center (or retail outlet, now) would have lifted a copy and leaked it. |

If it doesn't work yet, so what. I think everyone should sell it early, I mean....Steam sold it early. It is the same concept. You have it loaded, you just can't play. The biggest problem with that is the boxed copies include the unencrypted data to play, while the Steam copy includes all encrypted data without the executables making it pretty much impossible to use illegally. So as soon as people get the boxed copies, it'll be a matter of days (perhaps even hours) before it gets cracked and "everyone else" is playing except those who preordered on Steam. I doubt Valve wants to see that.
