I'd be 10x happier with my Audigy breakout box if it simply had USB 2.0 ports on it. Not sure why they've avoided doing this.

I never understood why people bought whole albums through iTunes. On a CD with more than 14 songs you're probably paying more/as much as the original CD and in return you get no liner notes, no jewel case, no physical copy, and most importantly of all it's in a lossy format

I won't come within ten internet meters of one of those online distributers until their selling in lossless formats and it's actually cheaper than the CD itself..

Your arguments are valid, but I haven't yet paid more than 9.99 for a full album on iTunes (admittedly I haven't bought very many full albums), which still beats the amazon price by $2 or $3. If iTunes is asking more than $9.99 then I will probably amazon it.

sound card competition? Nov 9, 2004, 15:02

I am very pleased to own a nforce motherboard with an nvidia soundstorm, but as it's only available as an intergrated component on nforce motherboards, this somehow describes the sound card situation. There is lots of onboard "competitors", but on retail cards it's mostly creative.

This makes the choice for people who want a gaming, or quality audio card very limited. And the driver quality of creative is just a horror story.

But it really hurts with sound standards, EAX is just horrible, i always turned it off when i still owned a creative card.

Things would have been different if aureal would have survived with their technology which was way ahead of EAX.

IIRC, albums on iTunes are $9.99 (or less if there's <10 songs).

The remainder of your concerns are certainly valid though.

I won't come within ten internet meters of one of those online distributers until their selling in lossless formats and it's actually cheaper than the CD itself.

I suspect that will happen shortly after never. I suspect you'll be forced into it though -- I just don't see the existing distribution models lasting much longer (like, 20-30 years tops).

Sooo..I'm not the only one where the speakers suddenly sets themselves to 2 speakers again and again even though I keep setting it to surround?

Nope, same deal here....I figured I was doing something wrong. I can't believe they can't just make a checkbox on the speaker selection page that says "Lock the #$&#% number of speakers" that prevents any changes until it is unchecked again. The problem seems to be (or is at least partially caused by) games that feel the need to change it. You'll select "surround" in a game, and suddenly your speakers settings are 4.1 instead of 5.1 (or maybe that's just me again).

Hopefully this will invigorate the record industry to rethink their distribution methods.

If the album is finished, release it to the legitimate online distributors immediately. If someone wants the hardcopy (CD) version, they'll have to wait.

U2 is one of the bands that I'll buy the album (probably via iTunes).

I've been using Mercora for almost 3 months. It's a really nice program. Over that time I have been exposed to some really good music. It's also nice to be able to connect to my stream while I am work.

Yeah, what happened to Audigy 3?

Remember the last card anyone ever designed with an Aureal chip on it?

Creative drivers are terrible, so is their support.

I mean WTF kinda company forces you to install the original drivers, before you can install the lastest release. And they rarely update them as well. EAX game support is flaky at best. Doom is a good example that game devs don't need Creative (Just lawyers apparently, ie their patent nonsense.)

Lest anyone forgets, they are still doing that video game patent crap. Remember, threatening to delay Doom3, threatening other engine licensees, etc, with a patent that has nothing to do with their core business and that happened to be after a speech on the concept given by a third party at a Creative event?

Plus, take a gander at the back of a Creative mp3 player box. Like how they say the 30gb versions hold 1000hours of WMAs vs 500hours of MP3s? Perhaps they should make it a bit more clear the WMA is recorded at 64bit and the mp3 is at 128bit.

Ffft.

Going from my Audigy to an M-Audio Delta 1010lt was like going from AOL to a Cable modem Internet wonderland.

I can't believe Creative hasn't gotten a clue yet and redesigned their audio apps.

Hm, apparently I missed the part where they released the Audigy 3.

I've got an Audigy 2 ZS, and while the sound quality is great (and the game performance remains unbeaten) I hate the control software. The drivers have been, dare I say it, rock solid but I cringe every time I have to sit through a speaker settings menu or some such fast-as-molasses interface.
