Bizz Buzz - Where's PC DRIV3R?

Atari Reports Fiscal 2005 Second Quarter and Six-Month Financial Results (thanks Frans) offers Atari's latest financials, including plans going forward. Curiously, or perhaps tellingly, there is no mention at all of the PC version of DRIV3R, suggesting the possibility that plans to release a port of the console wheelman game may have gone off course.

A good example was True Crime, it did ok on the consoles but once it hit the PC noone friggin cared and it flopped miserably. That game was pure console garbage and I paid 50 bucks for it hoping I would enjoy the multiplayer for the PC but I never seen more than 2 people online at once.

It felt like a console port...I could never get the mouse to feel right, no matter what I did. Camera control with the mouse and car handling both felt really sluggish...

The more I played, the more I was ready to go back to Vice City...

If this game sees the light of day on the PC I bet it wouldn't do well at all. Even if they did fix the bugs all the game's thunder has vanished and no one cares about it anymore. A good example was True Crime, it did ok on the consoles but once it hit the PC noone friggin cared and it flopped miserably. That game was pure console garbage and I paid 50 bucks for it hoping I would enjoy the multiplayer for the PC but I never seen more than 2 people online at once. I hate to see games do poorly on PC, I want developers to be more than willing to get thier games to PC and not just the consoles. I bought the new GTA last week and got sick of it after 2 hours. Sure it's a nice game but its the same 'ole shit over and over and over. Not to mention the graphics totally suck mostly because I am used to the PC versions of GTA3 and Vice City. But just because it has the GTA name in front of it everyone has to fall all over it and praise it to no end. The reviews for it have been in the high 90's but none of the reviewers dare to say Rockstar has used that engine for 3 games now and it has changed very little along with the gameplay being spoiled. Nonetheless, I'm sure I'll purchase it when it comes out for PC anyways just 'cause I will enjoy 100 times more with the controls and graphics.

The original Driver (on PC) had its strong points, and I personally thought it was a lot of fun and looked pretty spiffy to boot (especially the replay camera capability), but it was very very (very very very) frustrating to have the missions and free roam all immediately end if the car flipped over. Really, there are two workable solutions: break with reality and have a key that rights the car (and\or places it back on the nearest roadway) or make out-of-vehicle travel possible. The first solution is fairly straightforward and simple, the second very complex and easily mishandled. They just picked the wrong solution.
Granted, out-of-car capability does give you the opportunity to get other vehicles "on the fly", and not be stuck with the same vehicle for the duration of your drive (perhaps remedied by garages or something were you could swap), but sometimes you just have to stick with your strengths.

The thing is, a Driver game with no out-of-car aspects could make a perfectly fun game, if they took the extra time to make the physics work well, added a ton more missions, larger areas, etc.

But now every game even remotely close to the genre feels the need to compete with GTA3, so you have to be able to get out of the car and fight people, which just makes it more complex than most companies can handle.

I can't understand why people actually liked the first versions.
I personally saw it as a horrible game. Bad physics, worse control, pathetic graphics... etc...
Yet it had a following?? Strange.

When will the suits in this industry wake up and realise you can't rush things anymore? Perhaps that should be "t-shirts" as it would fit better with the overall professionalism of some.

Nice grammar... edit.

yes exactly. Driver was fun as hell. Then GTA III came alone, and it was forgotten and then some. They figured they could squeeze back in, but .... wrong I guess.

Such a shame, Driver was a freaking blast.

I can recall sitting in front of the screen with half a dozen buddies just taking turns "free riding" and trying to lose the cops.

um oops guess my memory is worse than I thought:

Rumor #2: Reflections Interactive is planning a special edition of the Atari-published Driver 3.

Source: An e-mail from a GameSpot reader.

The official story: "This would be news to me. Sounds pretty unlikely though, eh?" --Atari spokesperson.

What we heard: Late in the week, GameSpot received a message that read as follows: "I have inside information on Reflections! Reflections Interactive knows Driver 3 could be a kick-ass game, but the technical problems held it back, this is why Reflections is redoing it, the are fixing all the bugs in Driver 3 and will release it in spring 2005, called Driver 3: Special Edition. This new version of Driver 3 will also include four new levels and a sneak preview of Stuntman 2!" While certainly enthusiastic, the e-mail overlooked some cold hard facts--namely, that the Driver 3 was one of Atari's most highly anticipated titles of 2004, as Enter the Matrix was in 2003. Like Enter the Matrix, the game was an initial financial success but received a critical drubbing. Given the subsequent backlash against the game, it is unlikely that there would be a market for a special edition of Driver 3--which would likely have to be sold at a bargain price point--to justify further development dollars. A similar rumor was floated earlier this year about the PC Halo-wannabe Breed. That scenario had developer Brat Designs releasing a much-improved version the critically savaged version of the game, which was allegedly severely modified by publisher CDV and released under protest from Brat. That didn't happen. But, unlike Driver 3, Breed didn't sell more than 500,000 units.

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus.

One thing I didn't like about this game was the storyline. They spent all this money to get some hollywood actors for the voices, but the cut-scenes turned out to be pure crap. They consisted of MAYBE 2 lines of dialog. None of the characters were memorable. The cut-scenes didn't add to the game at all. They tried to be too artsy-film for it to make any sense. It's like they wanted to make a movie first & a game second.

I read the other day they are making a "directors cut" version for the consoles which will fix the bugs.

You have to love the state this industry is in when people can be expected to re-buy a console game just to fix all the problems that should have never been there...and they will!

Re4: Directorsy Cut.

They should release a Directory Cut with everything fixed.

It had a lot of potential that game..
to bad Atari fucked it up royally.

Almost as bad as Wings / Jowood did with Söldner!

Maybe they'll port it after that.

Excellent point. They can keep it if it's a buggy mess.

Driv3r is the worst example on how the gaming industry is today, they rushed the product even though it wasn't finished at all. The game sucked ass, it was no fun. It had enormous potentional but since it was rushed they weren't able to put the "good" into it, so all it had was the "bad" stuff.
