I'm suprised MS didn't release the title earlier than their projected Nov9 date after they seen the game was circulating the net a month early. If it were my company I would push to get the game out the door ASAP to cut down the amount of people that would download it because they don't want to wait for the release date. Metallica did the same thing with their piece of shit album "St. Anger" when they found out it was already being downloaded they pushed it out the door a week earlier. MAN THAT ALBUM SUCKED! But thats not the point the point is push the production of the title to cut your losses on the pirates.

BTW #9, "so small it's not even measurable" is pretty bullshit, at least for PC titles. Console titles are slightly harder to get working, and console players don't, on average, know where or how to get copies.
But for PC titles, you can quite easily measure the damage. Go to SuprNova.org and see how many people are pulling down the latest titles..it lists how many connections are going. I've seen over 49,000 people pulling a title from there. Realize that only MAYBE 10% of those people will purchase the game later, and that's only if it has multiplayer. If it's a singleplayer-only game, drop that to probably under 1% (why bother if you've already got it, right?).
While 49k isn't a major dent in a multi-million-copy selling game, it noticably hurts sales of PC titles that HOPE to sell MAYBE 500,000.
For Halo 2, however, I don't think the pirated copies are really going to do much damage. It's the biggest game this year...don't fool yourself. I want Half-Life 2 as badly as anyone else on here, but Halo 2 is an unstoppable behemoth. Nothing will touch its sales this Christmas.

so improve your INTERNAL SECURITY dumbass because 99.44% of the time "these guys" are your employees or someone along the production chain, which is completely trackable if people would make an effort to do so. I would have to say that figure is quite inaccurate; often it is the review copies wind up on the file sharing networks. |

Well, Microsoft doesn't get the $60. Microsoft is selling it to the distributors for between $35 and $40. The rest is for the stores. Plus, $49.99 is MSRP. The Babbage's near me is bumping the collector's edition up to $54.99 because they can.
However, the economics of the game industry don't back your argument either. Only 15% of games are profitable. The profits from those 15% have to pay for the failures of the other 85%.
So Microsoft will be making $70m on day one. That's fine. The game cost $20m to make, leaving $50m. Due to the distributor agreement, Microsoft has to hold on to 10% for chargebacks and returns, leaving $43m.
COGS per unit are about $8, so another $16m goes bye-bye leaving $27m. Take away the marketing funds, the comarketing dollars and the product placement funds, and you're down to about $20m.
That $20m then goes towards making up for commercial failures like "Kung Fu Chaos," "Azurik: Rise of Perathia," "Sneakers," "Nightcaster," and "Blink: The Time Sweeper."

No problems seeing the site from home...guess I should be working more at work...
Outlets in Toledo, Ohio, were mentioned specifically.
LOL. Maybe I should run up to Meijers, buy the game, and sell it on Ebay....hmmm....

They bitch and complain that someone pirated and gave it away for "free". But the small amount of people who are going to play it for free, isn't even measurable. The work and $ spent to get a system to play pirated games is ridiculous. I don't think they should be too worried, espically since estimates are around 2 million pre-orders. Quit crying.
60.00 x 2 million.
How much do you want? That is just pre-order.
Speaking of which, anyone know how many titles were sold of GTA:SA the first day? Pre-order? Total to date? I haven't found anything on that yet.

A month before the video game's scheduled release this coming Tuesday, illegal copies of the hot sci-fi action title "Halo 2" were already circulating on the Internet. It's had a lot of company lately.
"You spend three years of your life pouring everything you have into this project, and then somebody gets their hands on the game and gives it away to the world for free," said Brian Jarrard of Microsoft Corp.'s Bungie Studios, maker of "Halo 2." "We made this, and these guys had no right to give it out to the public."
High-profile titles are commonly pirated before they are released, certainly within days after they arrive in stores, said Douglas Lowenstein, president of the Entertainment Software Association.
In the case of "Halo 2," the French-language version appeared on file-sharing networks and news groups in October.

Thanks. The problem resides on my end then. I'm guessing it may be the "Mike Brady-era" computer I'm using at work.
I'll try again when I get home.

Does anyone else have troubles getting the stories linked to Gamespot working? They hardly ever work. Maybe since I'm not a 'premium' subscriber, I'm only allowed to view their articles during a certain time frame in a day.
