I remember reading a great marxist account of the original Star Wars What's funny is that I remember reading something that compared Star Wars to the Wizard of Oz. Just oges to shoe that some people, given enough time, will manage to connect anything to just about anything else

"Long distances cooped up in a ship that isn't the antiseptic plastic looking environment of Star Wars but more like a sea-going cargo ship of today."
I remember reading a great marxist account of the original Star Wars as a great work of class warfare, with succeeding entries in the expanded universe developing this theme. Kinda funny how all the SF universes with extended timelines end up with social structures that are less and less egalitarian... |

I too recently jumped on the console gaming bandwagon (I bought a PS2). My strategy is just to shop in the 'greatest hits' collections, thinking that I'll let millions of other people figure out of it sucks or not at $70 a pop, then I'll skim off the creamy titles for $29.

You can buy a pot plant in FFXI?
You buy the pot, then grow stuff. Depending on the pot, seeds and crystals you use, and the phase of the moon, the plant that grows can be beautiful or ugly, and produce fruit that is expensive or worthless.
Makes a nice change from slaying orcs sometimes.

No kidding. When we were in South Dakota back in '02, the number of anti-abortion signs just blew me away. Here I was thinking that Georgia was conservative...it didn't even come close to SD. |

Long distances cooped up in a ship that isn't the antiseptic plastic looking environment of Star Wars but more like a sea-going cargo ship of today. Well you basically have 3 space-going scenarios: 1) No FTL (faster-than-light) travel. Doesn't matter that space is big, the area you can get to in a reasonable amount of time is small. Even with "hypersleep" or some other hibernation ability it's likely to be only very large vessels taking entire colonies to places. It's just too expensive otherwise -- even if you can make the ship for nothing, time is money.
2) FTL, but expensive. About like what you say -- ocean going vessels or even modern airline industry is the best analogy.
3) FTL, and cheap. That's what Enahs wants... probably the best analogy is the discovery of the New World in Europe or the opening of the West in the US. Most people stick to population centers, but some strike out into the great unknown. Either to setup their own colonies (ala Puritans or Mormans), to make it rich (Columbus, Conquistadores, Gold Rush), or other reasons. And the end result will probably be the same -- civilization will expand to the first two groups and a large percentage of the third group will die in spectacularly stupid ways.
