Sims 2 Patch Status

Sim Forum (thanks Tiscali Games) offers a status report on a Sims 2 patch:
I'm posting to give you an update on the patch. We have a team working hard to get it out to you soon. We want to make sure we understand the issues from all sides, and we don't want to rush out a patch that will only substitute, misdiagnose, or overlook problems the community is having with the game. We are so sorry for all the inconvenience that some of you are having. We know it's frustrating for some, and we know it's only because of the dedication to our games the community has that makes them successful. We'll keep you updated as news becomes available.

Crash Nov 9, 2004, 12:21
Nov 9, 2004, 12:21

A lot of people can't even install the game, but the problem I'm running into is a total game crash after being in a lot for about 10 to 15 minutes. It never happens while I am creating a Sim, though. I'm pretty upset that I paid $50 for this game and I can't even play it. The only suggestion they've offered up at the site is that you're running other programs in the background (which I'm not) and/or that you have too little memory. I have a fairly nice system, so, that isn't true. I really hope this patch resolves the crash issue as well....SOON.

Problems with the Sims 2 Nov 3, 2004, 21:40

Unfortunately, the Sims 2 is plagued with a problem that renders it unplayable.

If you play a Sim long enough, eventually they can no longer chat with other sims. Which unfortunately means they can't do much, since sims chat a lot in the Sims 2 (while eating, in the hot tub, watching TV, relaxing in bed, etc). Just can't do those actions any more.

Not everyone has it yet, but they will get it, if they play a sim long enough. First reports showed up about a week after the game shipped, around the 22nd of Sept or so.

So for some people, the game has been unplayable for well over a month.

There are also some minor issues, like with the Teddy Bear, but they are minor.

Dude, aren't you supposed to boost your cooking skills and buy better appliances so that food is more effective?

To a degree, yes. But... If I call out for a pizza I still have to eat a bout 3-4 servings to fill-up. Some of my sims have pretty good cooking skills, but I have yet to sit down to a meal and completely fill up my hunger meter without going for seconds and thirds.

It must have something to do with their traits, then - I generally get my fornicating Sims by with a toaster pastry in the morning and an early dinner (around 5) with just one serving. And I don't have very expensive appliances (though the food skill has increased).

"ummm, Ea is a publisher, not a developer, they don't make patches."

This is much like saying that the Sears toy department is a seperate entity from the Sears corporation. If the Sears toy department does something unfortunate in any way... say, something illegal, for the sake of an example... the Sears toy department does not get charged: Sears does. Likewise, Maxis is a division of EA... a part of EA. The two are no more seperable than a toy department to a department store and the store itself. If Maxis were a seperate and distinct corporation, then you would have a point; but as it is a division of EA, and all employees are thereby employed by EA, then to say that EA is not a developer is incorrect. In the case of The Sims, they simply use the Maxis banner. It is a brand, not a company.

"Maxis, the developer has had a fine history making relatively bug free products, and making patches that address the issues that do crop up."

Tell that to the owners of Sims Unleashed, with its mass of bugs that were not only well documented, but even admited to by the developers. Bugs that were only partially patched, while others could not be corrected. Likewise for Sims Superstar, with glaring flaws that were so deeply rooted into the game, that the only practical option available was to put any necessary fixes into the NEXT expansion pack: Makin' Magic.
Likewise for owners of the original expansion packs: Livin' Large and House Party, where installation was a shot in the dark for many, as registry files would often be installed before much of the rest of the package, resulting in a message indicating that the expansion pack was already installed before almost all of the contents were installed. The solution to this was either manually uninstalling everything and reinstalling, or manually deleting files from the registry and reinstalling. The Sims Eraser was introduced to combat this... after the release of Hot Date, and over a full year after the problem first surfaced.

"I know it's cool to get on some band wagon..."
...because a joke about the business practices of one company is far greater an example of band wagon jumping than fanboyism for a developer.

"but thinking can be cool too..ya know?"
And on this, I agree fully.

Is this the patch that lets me bang the maid, the gardener, the repairwoman, the mailwoman and all my neighbors while my wife is at work!? Oh wait I could already do that.

I only have one issue with the game... Make food more effective!!! I have to eat 3-4 times in a row to max out nourishment. Plus, a sim should not die if food goes down to nothing. They should get sick or something. As it stands, they live longer if they catch on fire.

I saw EA as the sort to never patch, or at most half patch. For quick, badly tested patches, you can't beat Ubisoft and the Raven Sheild development team!

You're EA, its what you are famous for!

I disagree. I think they are famous for taking forever to release a patch, not rushing one out.

whats strange is Im having no issues with this game.. wonder what the issues are

What this patch will do is make sure everyone will have issues with the game, that way everyone is on an even footing.

A developer that communicates with their community. Apparently a novel concept for some. Hey, The Creative Assembly - are you reading this?
