C-S: Source Content Plans

A post to the CS-Nation comments (thanks HomeLAN Fed and HLFallout) by Valve's Erik Johnson reveals plans to release more content for Counter-Strike Source before the end of the year:

We're working on porting some more of the classic maps right now, currently de_prodigy is in the works. We'll be releasing this as quickly as they are completed.

We're also working on one original map, which will begin internal playtesting this week. This still means we have a fair amount of work to do on it.

We're also working on two updated player models.

Most of this is scheduled to be released in the December timeframe.

I think it's freaking ludicrous that CS:S is HL2's multiplayer showing. I mean after 5+ years all they could do was a damn port? HL2 better polish nob for the amount of time they spent on it.

All we can do is hope the mod community that use to exist back in the good old days, comes back to life and makes some great games for us all to play.

I consider the barrels and things useful, no you can't jump on top of them, which is a bummer, but you can still use them as cover. I throw them down in front of my if I'm in the bridge room (t side) on aztec and they offer some extra cover.

Also, you can roll barrels into corners if you know someones in the corner and it will push them out.. it's kinda funny to do. Apparently the physics are so gimped because of lag issues, kind of a bummer but that's the way it goes (at least for now).

As for your analysis of hit boxes.. well.. most people are aiming at the head and these days many (hell, most) are quite proficent at it. I've done some testing with a friend and the hitboxes are actually pretty accurate. Certain guns, I consider over powered, but that's another story entirely.

And I hate shields, good riddance to them..

So.. um.. yeah.. for a multiplayer part of HL2 I expected something good, this is just a CS with better graphics and a worse gameplay.

Oh, yeah, the physics are just "for show" since you get "bumped" everytime you touch an object, and if you try to jump onto one you fall through. So yeah.. that barrel in piranesi on the castle roof? You fall through and lose 40 hp. Nice.

The man has a point. CS:S is damn fun, but after a few yrs of CS, one has to wonder, where the hell is HL 2 Standard deathmatch, or at least NEW content? And I don't just mean "one or two new levels" or "a new model".

Come on Mother Bird Valve, barf up some content for your baby chicks. We all have our not-so-little mouths open...

Good (or bad if you're an admin) about CS:S, there is no admin mod so you can't get slayed or your controls rebinded.

The bad:
Only one player model per team, <10 maps which are complete remakes (they even got gimped.. no double crate on dust, cant go on the roofs in italy, etc). Took out shield (which isnt so bad but I'd like more variety), no new weapons, hitboxes are gimped (half of all kills are HS).

So.. um.. yeah.. for a multiplayer part of HL2 I expected something good, this is just a CS with better graphics and a worse gameplay.

Oh, I forgot the NATO maps. God they sucked. Unofficial maps made to appear true to life, but had no gameplay value.

Haha, I couldn't remember Siege, now I do. Had some fun running to the elevator, making it there first, and shooting down on CTs trying to come up.

Militia and the Retirement Home are still among my favorites. The Retirement Home was way underrated.

Docks was fun, unless you had a camper. Too often the last CT would camp and never be found. The only real downside to the map. When people played it the matches were great.

Assault was insane. I found that one team always dominated, but it was still a ton of fun. For the CTs getting in was tough unless they either worked together or had one or two guys that kicked ass enough to get in. Proudly, I was often one of those guys. Unless the Ts had an equal guy, then I was neutered. =(

I never played 747, sounds cool, though.

Desert was the worst... until Dust.

Glad to see so many others remember the greatness that was Docks!

That one was sweet. My all time favorite was this train station map that I forget the name of. It was in Beta 4 I think, not sure if it was around past that.

Oh yeah! That map did kick some ass. I think that one was around for quite a while. It was a DE map right?

And I was never thrilled by CS_747. I thought the idea was pure gold, but the map itself never seemed to work out. I dunno, maybe I had crap servers when I played it.

Ok, lets think of more old school CS goodness! Seige was definately the Dust of it's time...that map was so overplayed back in the day. And I always thought Assault was just impossible as the CTs unless you had some seriously bad Ts. Just my $.02

I've been getting nostalgic for the old game types that they dropped - Escape (I enjoyed the subway one) and whatever the one was where you escorted the diplomat. Perhaps they weren't as good or as balanced as the other modes, but it added a bit more variety. I know they weren't as popular, and I guess that's why they got cut.

Having bought the Silver Steam package I've been playing CS:Condition Zero and having fun against the bots (less embarrassing than playing real people), but I was annoyed that I could only play the Counter-Terrorists and it all got a bit repetitive.

I remeber the map.
Funny how all of the creative maps aren't released....but the mindless ones made it with flying colors. Who the hell ever made Dust such a priority anyway? It isn't that great of a map as far as gameplay and layout. (IMHO)

I think the maps they released say something about the people that play them.....(lemmings comes to mind)

Office is a great map, along with Prodigy. Does anyone remember Docks? I seriously loved that map, but nobody played it. There was a dust mod that added a corridor and made it a much more varied map. I think every map should have at least 3 ways to go...2 is just lame. Aztec is a pretty cool map. I guess Im out of the CS loop. I don't even remember what beta version I played.

Batman: By "Original" they mean "New". As in it's a new original (not a copy) map.

Steam has built in cheat protection called VAC. I haven't seen any blatant cheating but wallhacks are still there and probably always will be. Cheaters can be banned for up to one year under VAC.

But then, why not just call it a NEW FUCKING MAP.

Because all the maps mentioned can be considered to be 'new' to CS:Source.
