Hey, Flayra. Make it so that, in Combat, jetpackers don't get a auto-resupply unless they land for a few seconds. =p

But around the time we hear, "And then Gordon falls in love..." we usually head back to Seattle screaming. well thank god at least they have that much sense.
Nothing pisses me off more than seeing a potentially interesting fantasy/sci-fi project ruined with a bunch of "Hollywood Formula" slurpy romance bullshyt. They'll need to go outside the US if they want a HL film done right.

Flayra, I think we're all excited to see what your team comes up with for a commercial game, and happy to know that if there is a NS:S it will be free.
Hump, if you read them as saying that "We aren't going to substitute some new system, just add some sort of subscription thing" then fine. But they will make more money if they charge 10 bucks an "episode" for SP content and make each game 10 or so "episodes" long, and then go to a monthly subscription system for internet multiplayer. I'm not saying they WILL do this, but now they CAN. And they can always use "code security" as an excuse to do it.
The question we need to answer is, is Valve looking at the best interests of its fans, or the best interests of its bank account?
And you cannot deny that Gabe is FAT! |

We'd love to see how much work it would be to move Natural Selection to Source, but we're going to be way behind the official HL mods, as we haven't gotten access to the SDK yet.
We're never going to charge for NS though, regardless of the engine. The next game is another matter though.

I guess I should have expected the worst from Valve. But now they really are considering making gaming MUCH more expensive:
"HomeLAN - A while back Gabe Newell said they were considering a monthly subscription model for Half-Life 2. Is that still possible down the road if Valve decides to release regular new content for the game, a la what the folks at KumaWar have done?
Doug Lombardi - Yes. It's still something we'd like to offer in addition to full purchase of our games."
There you go, folks! Did you know Charles Dickens made over 20 times as much money when he published in subsciption format? The community needs to take a stand against this attempt to "pay-by-feature" but I don't know how we can do it. How do you convince a company to not screw its customers when they probably can screw them? Is there a way other than not buying (which we can't, because they are really good products)? Maybe some form of obscene spam/letter writing/server crashing/bag of flaming dog shit on doorstepping? Take a "stand" against what? Lets read together, sometimes that helps:
"It's still something we'd like to offer in addition* to full purchase of our games"
* = I read that as "optional", not "required"
if you think about it, paying $9.95 for a single player game that you can finish in several days is more of a bargain than going out and purchasing the whole thing. Obviously if you want to play the MP long term then the full version WHICH WOULD STILL BE AVAILBLE is more up your alley.

So your getting an updated version of HL...hmm..so? If you REALLY need to play the game before you play HL2, then go to steam and play the regular version. It may not have all the bells and whistles, but its still a kick ass game. That's what I did. After a while, you start ignoring the low-res textures and just enjoy the game, at least as long as you are on earth. I get to Zen and don't feel like any more jumping....

BTW, Valve would have us pay for that too if they were working on it. Will we soon have to pay for all the mods? What kind of community will it be then? <sigh> From socialist utopia to capitalist hell in a product cycle. So, any pro-capitalists out there want to argue that we should manditorially pay mod authors for mods? Was it really so bad before (now). You only have to pay for mods Valve has gotten involved commercially with... and it is entirely the choice of the mod author to get involved with Valve, so I'd say very little has changed... aside from the fact that, should mod authors become extremely successful, they have the *option* of making a bit of money off their creations (sounds fair).

Doug Lombardi - Yes. It's still something we'd like to offer in addition to full purchase of our games. What part of "in addition" do you not understand? =p
You can buy the game, and own it forever, or, if you only think you will play it for a month or two, just pay less to rent it. Sounds reasonable...

I don't think HL1 had deathmatch right out of the original box either... It did, it was just laggy and poorly supported. Took a few patches for them to get the net code playable and to include team deathmatch and more than two player models. HLDM was fun stuff though, even if Valve doesn't do it I'm sure we'll eventually see HL2DM.

I stand corrected - I checked the press release site for Half-Life and yes, it did indeed have MP out of the box. I didn't get into Half-Life until GOTY edition was out, but I *loved* DM...I'm quite sick of CS and hope they'll release a DM patch.
