Commandos Strike Force Announced

Eidos Announces Commandos Strike Force is the press release officially announcing an upcoming World War II first-person shooter based on the Commandos series that was first revealed this summer (story). The first screenshots from the project can be found on GenGamers. Here's a bit:

Eidos, one of the world's leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, announces the return of the legendary Commandos in the World War II first person shooter Commandos Strike ForceTM. Developed by Pyro Studios, Commandos Strike Force will be released worldwide in spring 2005 on PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC.

In a new direction for the multi-million selling series, Commandos Strike Force takes you right into the heart of the action from a first person perspective. Take control of the three members of the 'Strike Force' unit, each with their own play style. Switch between the Green Beret, always at the heart of the action with his expertise in combat and the use of heavy weaponry, the Sniper with his nerves of steel and expert marksmanship, and the Spy, stealthily striking at the heart of the enemy. However, it is up to you how you execute plans of attack by combining the Commandos' unique skills.

Set in war torn Europe amid the backdrop of World War II, you must take your elite group of Commandos behind enemy lines on a series of linked missions through France, Russia and Norway. Destroying a Nazi ship, ambushing enemy troops, freeing French Resistance prisoners and kidnapping a general are a few of the large range of missions. As well as a compelling single player campaign, the game features a variety of original online multiplayer modes. In the most fearsome war ever fought emerged the most fearless soldiers.

What? Why is Commandos an FPS now?

Oh I see.. IT'S EIDOS! IS ANYONE 'FREAKIN' SURPRISED?

Already they have this reputation for taking thought-provoking original IP, and shitting all over it (Deus Ex- American Ghost in the Shell, DXIW- Saturday Morning Cartoon). Nevermind it's the hardcore audience for these properties that faithfully engross themselves in each one and shell out the dollars.

WizKids finally learned to stop screwing BattleTech so royally (or maybe not, "Dark Ages" still rolls the eyes) by understanding the original hardcore audience and their continued loyalty to the brand was necessary for the survival of the franchise and that their word-of-mouth and loyalty through the years would be the driving force in drawing a new audience AND NOT the mainstream watering-down of the franchise for the Digimon/Pokemon generation.

Eidos' business practices however, namely determining the shape of a game, are determined by a gutless marketing team who apparently saw fit to yank the tits of the WWII cow one last time, before these already raw nipples bleed the whole bovine to death. Just as this cow goes into a shivering coma (talking about Tomb Raider for instance), they'll allow the market to scab over before yanking old wounds open by announcing a major comeback which they will also screw up. Eidos has yet to see why, or admit why, their IP's are losing favor with the masses or the original audiences.

Next stop: Fully consolized "Deus Ex" with lots of small words, big boobs and bright colors. Check your brain at the door; The house built on Laura Croft is going to bend Deus Ex over for the money shot.

That's how it is. Each game is 'well recieved' now matter how much'a pile of garbage it is, sequels are cranked out like so many french fries, 'Eidos is doing well', while all the while they quietly comment that they're 'entertaining' buy-out offers.

When I said Max Payne 2 couldn't possibly be good news, I was wrong. I have great faith now that Rockstar and (some long, long time ago...) 3DRealms have some grip on how to make a great game. I have every faith that the original developement teams that work on these Eidos games knew at one time how to do a damn-good game. But Eidos has taken themselves too seriously for too long.

A few tablespoons of Miller Lite needs to be poured to the ground for Eidos' pending demise, and a Guiness Draught each for some of the IP they're taking with them. It can be stopped, but it won't. Eidos would rather go down swinging and run away with what they can.

Please, someone more articulate than I make some noise about this and save our games.
