Commandos Strike Force Announced

Eidos Announces Commandos Strike Force is the press release officially announcing an upcoming World War II first-person shooter based on the Commandos series that was first revealed this summer (story). The first screenshots from the project can be found on GenGamers. Here's a bit:

Eidos, one of the world's leading publishers and developers of entertainment software, announces the return of the legendary Commandos in the World War II first person shooter Commandos Strike ForceTM. Developed by Pyro Studios, Commandos Strike Force will be released worldwide in spring 2005 on PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC.

In a new direction for the multi-million selling series, Commandos Strike Force takes you right into the heart of the action from a first person perspective. Take control of the three members of the 'Strike Force' unit, each with their own play style. Switch between the Green Beret, always at the heart of the action with his expertise in combat and the use of heavy weaponry, the Sniper with his nerves of steel and expert marksmanship, and the Spy, stealthily striking at the heart of the enemy. However, it is up to you how you execute plans of attack by combining the Commandos' unique skills.

Set in war torn Europe amid the backdrop of World War II, you must take your elite group of Commandos behind enemy lines on a series of linked missions through France, Russia and Norway. Destroying a Nazi ship, ambushing enemy troops, freeing French Resistance prisoners and kidnapping a general are a few of the large range of missions. As well as a compelling single player campaign, the game features a variety of original online multiplayer modes. In the most fearsome war ever fought emerged the most fearless soldiers.

Easiest Game EVER!

Hah! It really would. Germany went around the Maginot Line, and France didn't have a second farm girl to lead their armies this time around, so the government surrendered instead of choosing to fight. I say 6-8 levels because I figure there could be one involving Poland, one through Belgium, and then some French butt-whooping.

WWI gameplay: Spawn in trench, inhale gas, die
Spawn in trench, get blown up by artillery, die
Spawn in trench, poke head up, get shot by sniper, die
Spawn in trench, get entire body into no-mans-land, get shot by machineguns, die

You forgot
Spawn in trench, get dysentery, shoot own foot off.

At last, the neo cons plan is clear - start ww3 and save the economy with the massive trade in arms and fps shooters...

I mean fuck, we are running out of wars, and the shitty little wars recently make for shitty games. I think the US should declare war on europe and china at the same time, then ally with japan and russia so we can be playing ww3 shooters already. The fuck is taking so god damn long bush?

Fuck

Well it sucked unless you got a nice 2 player game going with a friend. That's how I got into the whole game and learned it. I'd come home just to play an hour worth with my friend who was already a pro at it and teaching me everything. Once I mastered it, I think I got better than him. I can do the 3rd mission(first real one), Commandos 2, in 13 minutes. I think it was the standalone pack that had the Zoo mission. That mission was so much fun. One thing they missed out that was good in Commandos COD, and BEL multi was the marker thing so you can show your friend where you want him to move or which guy to kill, etc. That's the main thing that got me to learn it. It's nearly impossible to tell ur friend which guy to kill in Commandos 2 multi since theirs 4 angles and you have no idea which one he has on. Yadada.

Last poster has a point. Commandos original (online sucked) was
one very good game. I used to come home on my lunch hour just
to continue a saved game. That was one cool game.

I didn't get into Commandos 2 or 3.

I'm wondering if Pyro can even now compete with the likes of
BF1942, MOH...etc in first person type game.

Hey, the original Commandos was very cool.

"I wish someone would make a Medieval era type game using the game mechanics from Die by the Sword. (mouse movement swings the PC arm and weapon).
Implement different weapons.
Implement a decent physics engine.
Allow the player to first hack off an enemies arm then pick it up and use it as a weapon."

I wouldn't mind WW2 games if they each handled different aspects. We need to see new scenarios. SAS in North Africa can satisfy developers' fetish for vehicle chase scenes. Patton's miniature quagmire in Lorraine would be a nice assault scenario. And how about the Pacific theater, eh? We get nothing from there--and I know, there's a Medal of Honor game about the Pacific theater. It's just one title in a sea of Europe-focused WW2 games.

A nice idea for a change... let us play as the Germans! The game could start off with six or eight German levels involving the invasion of France, and the subsequent invasion of the USSR. After the requisite Stalingrad stage, insert a Kasserine Pass level, and then the focus would shift to the Brits: you could start those SAS/North Africa levels. Toss in a stage playing as a tanker under Patton, and you're done with North Africa. Two levels in Sicily--one for the landing, one for the drive to Messina. Jump back to the Commies, you retake some cities (I'm not too familiar with the eastern front, sorry.) Then you have D-Day, focusing on the Americans up until Operation Market-Garden, where you get one American level and one British level (joint operation.) Then a couple of Lorraine levels. Then some "Russians in Poland" stages. Then Patton crossing the Rhine, then the Russians taking Berlin.

Of course, this isn't going to happen. Sigh.

Amen to that. The more articulate thing. Why can't you just wank like ordinary folk do instead of spewing that haphazard dreck, like it matters? Jesus, get over yourself. I feel your pain and all but, GODDAM, you're such a little girl it doesn't feel like you should be posting here.

Commandos was one of the greatest PC games I've ever played. It posed a daunting challenge on every mission that with time, you could complete and it never felt so great beating a mission that in that game. It was a true game for the hardcore gamers. I loved the original, the standalone sequel, was great, Commandos 2 was simplifed for you newbs, and Commandos 3 was awful. I knew it was going to head down the line into a first/3rd person view game, though what can you do? Need it newbified until some of you idiots are able to play it.

What? Why is Commandos an FPS now?

Oh I see.. IT'S EIDOS! IS ANYONE 'FREAKIN' SURPRISED?

Already they have this reputation for taking thought-provoking original IP, and shitting all over it (Deus Ex- American Ghost in the Shell, DXIW- Saturday Morning Cartoon). Nevermind it's the hardcore audience for these properties that faithfully engross themselves in each one and shell out the dollars.

WizKids finally learned to stop screwing BattleTech so royally (or maybe not, "Dark Ages" still rolls the eyes) by understanding the original hardcore audience and their continued loyalty to the brand was necessary for the survival of the franchise and that their word-of-mouth and loyalty through the years would be the driving force in drawing a new audience AND NOT the mainstream watering-down of the franchise for the Digimon/Pokemon generation.

Eidos' business practices however, namely determining the shape of a game, are determined by a gutless marketing team who apparently saw fit to yank the tits of the WWII cow one last time, before these already raw nipples bleed the whole bovine to death. Just as this cow goes into a shivering coma (talking about Tomb Raider for instance), they'll allow the market to scab over before yanking old wounds open by announcing a major comeback which they will also screw up. Eidos has yet to see why, or admit why, their IP's are losing favor with the masses or the original audiences.

Next stop: Fully consolized "Deus Ex" with lots of small words, big boobs and bright colors. Check your brain at the door; The house built on Laura Croft is going to bend Deus Ex over for the money shot.
-phorce phed 27 AUG 2004, "Deus Ex and Thief Plans"

That's how it is. Each game is 'well recieved' now matter how much'a pile of garbage it is, sequels are cranked out like so many french fries, 'Eidos is doing well', while all the while they quietly comment that they're 'entertaining' buy-out offers.

When I said Max Payne 2 couldn't possibly be good news, I was wrong. I have great faith now that Rockstar and (some long, long time ago...) 3DRealms have some grip on how to make a great game. I have every faith that the original developement teams that work on these Eidos games knew at one time how to do a damn-good game. But Eidos has taken themselves too seriously for too long.

A few tablespoons of Miller Lite needs to be poured to the ground for Eidos' pending demise, and a Guiness Draught each for some of the IP they're taking with them. It can be stopped, but it won't. Eidos would rather go down swinging and run away with what they can.

Please, someone more articulate than I make some noise about this and save our games.

BHD was in Somalia, more specifically Operation Continue Hope. The Gulf War games are Desert Storm 1 and 2, BF2, etc.

You beat me to it on this, by a wide margin. Doesn't it just highlight how jaded we've become as a species when people get mixed up like this? I could rant on as normal but it's just too depressing.

OTOH, Iron Storm was pseudo WWI. Genius too, like an artist with a paint brush in one hand and a dead baby in the other. I didn't say good, mind you. Art can be difficult sometimes.

What a freaking terrible idea, what a massive way to alienate the Commandos fanbase (which includes me).

I heartily agree. The small-scale RTS isometric gameplay of the Commandos series is what makes it unique, not the setting. The game could take place during the revolutionary war, the 2714 Xerzon Wars, Vietnam, or even the battle at Tripoli foor all I care, it was the gameplay that stood out. The franchise in itself has a thin plot line, relatively forgetable characters (I have played 3 games with them and I still don't even know their names, except for the dog Whiskey (which they removed in C3). They're just Green Beret, Sniper, etc.)

I thought removing ol' Whiskey was a bad idea, but taking this to first person shooter eliminates everything that made this franchise stand out. Unless they've had a revalation and find some way to incorporate these features in a way that doesn't seem pandering, this is definitely a "milk the franchise" game.
