I'm pretty certain he has no idea what hes talking about, 'simple serials' are 'Complexly checked' making it near-impossible to use a keygen to create a key that would actually work online. (You have a higher chance of winning the lottery than generating a working key)
As with all games, a cdkey generator will create a key that the installer algorythm verifies, however when you try to play online it will check your key in its database of keys that were actually printed and boxed, if it fails that check you can't play... Steam does the same thing except for single player games as well. Take it from me, you will not being seeing any 'warezed' users on legit servers, and if they can figure out how to run an emulated steam server then I'll be damned.

Hrmm, so you are saying that the servers aren't query'ing the authentication servers to see if its a paid for serial number?

That's one of the advantages of Steam, they can work on things like that and update quite easily. I'd imagine that's one of their priorities before HL2 goes public. The more secure they get the system before release the better it is for their sales. I'm hoping that by paying for my copy I won't be playing on a server with some idiot who warez theirs. Just my thoughts...

When will they fix it so people with an illegal downloaded copy can not play on steam! With people who actually paid for the game! I mean, simple serials do the trick...why can't Steam prevent users with an illegal copy joining legal servers...:( |

actually, if you're like me and you don't reboot your machine very often/ever, then it's a nice reminder to shut down steam and restart it. it seems to only query the server when it's coming up, and doesn't seem to poll when it's just hanging out.
i only have Steam running when i want to play. kinda pointless to have it running in your systray taking up memory when you're not doing anything with it.

bunko if you go to steampowered.com you'll see that if you pre-order HL2 now, you get CS:S immediately and you can play it now.
as for "is this news?" - doesn't everyone have steampowered.com's RSS feed in their RSS aggregator anyway? (or LiveBookmark feature in FireFox for me). maybe that's just me. This comment was edited on Oct 13, 16:29. |

When are they gonna get off their lazy asses and fix the built in wall hack?! Stupid valve, how can you expect your game to be fair when you allow workarounds to see through walls, in beta, AND in final.

I'm confuzzled. Can you actually play CS:S now or is it a 'locked copy of the game is on your hard drive' dealio?

I agree, Steam is really pretty cool.
However, Blue, is this really news? I mean, sure there is an update to Steam, but since it automatically loads when users connect, there really isn't any "actionable" information here. |

no. you can only get the DVD version from retailers.
(and Blue the update is actually for the Steam client, not CS:S)

Can I preorder HL2 DVD from Valve |

Last I heard, HL2 collector's edition comes on a DVD. I went to the valvesoftware.com site and they seem to only offer HL2 via Steam. Anybody know whether I can preorder the collector's edition on DVD direct from Valve?

I've only had this Steam program for CS:S and it's pretty nice in my opinion. I was tweaking some scripts last night with a friend and when we went to log back on and it automatically updated the game (9:55 EST-ish). It's amazing to me how they can provide content so quickly and still allow you to play with non-updated clients and servers.
I'm eagerly awaiting HL2, DoD, and the VAC implementation. Keep up the good job Valve!
