New 3DRealms Game?

A comment on a story on Game Matters on original games (thanks GameGossip and HomeLAN Fed) has a quote from 3DRealms' Scott Miller that indicates they've got another game in the works other than Duke Nukem Forever. Here's the whole deal for now:
Id is now working on an original project, and although we're known for Duke, we also helped bring Max Payne to the market, and we're currently working on an unannounced original game, too.

Well the game doesn't cost that much, Scott Miller said in a discussion on the internet in July last year that game had cost lest than 5 million $, becuase they where very few inthe begining(for instance they where, 4 when they started to develop the game in 1997).

Where can they possibly be getting the money to continue working on DNF after all these years? I would take millions to keep a team of programmers and artists on a project for this long.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I seriously think they should just forget about DNF (hmmm has this already happened) and concentrate on more completeable projects.

Its funny to think that 3dR has lasted longer than 3dfx. Who would have ever thought...

Oh, I found this on 3D Realms homepage regarding Remedy's first game Death Rally: "Originally released September 6, 1996."

UPDATED:

Remedy say on there homepage founded in 1995 and this is taking from there homepage regarding the history of Max Payne and 3DMark:

"In late 1996, after Death Rally was finished, people at Remedy started brainstorming ideas about a "3rd person action game". A prototype and design document of the game were created and shown to 3D Realms, who immediately fell in love with the idea. A development contract was signed and work on Max Payne began.

In 1997, Remedy created Final Reality™, a 3D accelerator benchmark program, for VNU Business Publications. It quickly became a widely used standard in 3D accelerator benchmarking with over 5 million copies distributed worldwide.

While Final Reality™ was an unbelievable success, it did not fit into Remedy's focus of creating action-packed games. A new company was founded in November 1997. Futuremark was born. Today Futuremark has established 3DMark as the defacto standard in 3D benchmarking. Over 20 million copies of subsequent 3DMarks have been distributed."

"(later to split and become Remedy and Mad Onion - which became Futuremark again"

What are you talking about ?

To my knowledge Remedy and Mad Onion/Futuremark have never been one company Remedy where one of the founder of Mad Onion/Futuremark and they licensed them the Max-FX engine(Wich was not later sold to Take 2, they "only" sold them a perpetual license).

Remedy had begon early development on Max Payne before 3D Realms entered into the picture, they were actually working on three games at once but 3D Realms adviced them to concentrate on one and Max Payne(or Dark Justice as it was known as initially) was the one 3D Realms and Remedy picked.

3D Realms involvement in Max Payne was a result of them(under the name Apogee) publishing their(Remedy's) first game Death Rally.

"Unless this "new game" is two months away from release or 3DR are shopping for a publisher for it, then they have once again made the mistake of announcing something way too early. I'd have thought they would have learned not to talk about a project until it's release is imminent. Why do they need to create a buzz at this point? What's the real motivation here?"

The game is still unannouced remember we no nothing about it.

How much more vague can you possibly get, 3Drealms? Shut the fuck up and make the fucking video game. I'm sick and tired hearing about what 3Drealms is probably not doing. And they seem to know more about what other game companies are working on, than their own projects.

Boycott 3DRealms!!! Which should be easy since they haven't made jack shit to purchase in the last few years.

My faves were these:

"The Voyager 1 spacecraft has travelled approximately 2.5 billion miles since the announcement of Duke Nukem Forever."

"The rovers Spirit and Opportunity were proposed, authorized, announced, designed, launched and successfully landed upon Mars within the timeframe of Duke Nukem Forever's development."

In late breaking news.... the general populace is fairly confident of Armadillo Aerospace also landing on mars, building a base, and allowing id software to develop their next installment of DooM at this base...... before DNF is released.....

In one of the early tech demos from Futuremark (later to split and become Remedy and Mad Onion - which became Futuremark again), there were posters of Max Payne. Was his name on those posters? Was 3DR already involved before Remedy even existed? Hmmm...I wish I still had that demo so I could check to see if they had already called him "Max."

Unless this "new game" is two months away from release or 3DR are shopping for a publisher for it, then they have once again made the mistake of announcing something way too early. "3d Realms had nothing to do with Max Payne except to publish it...Remedy is the one who made the game 3d realms published it and then sold those right to RockStar Games another brillent move by 3d Realms guess they needed the money lol"

This is absolutely incorrect 3D Realms never published Max Payne(infact 3D Realms have quit the publishing bussines a long time ago), Rockstar/Take 2 was the publisher from day one. 3D Realms role in the development of Max Payne was this:

They financed it, 100% from their own pocket whilst paying for DNF at the same time, also 100% from their own pocket.
They helped develop the character.
They handled bussines matters for Remedy, for instance they negotiated the contract with Rockstar/Take 2,theyre relationship with 3D Realms enabled them to receive a much better deal from Take 2.
They came up with the name Max.
They helped out with marketing.
They gave creative input, amongst other 3D Realms co-owner George Broussard perfected the idea of Bullet-Time.
They playtested it(they received one copy a month).
They provided(and still provide) the official forums.
They sell it on their online store.

Remedy was very pleased with its relationship with 3D Realms. Both parties have stated that the project could not have been done without the other.

Max Payne is both a 3D Realms game and a Remedy game, it was by all means a joint collabrative effort by the two companies, it was a very positive relationship.

And it is not the publishing rigths for Max Payne that where sold to Take 2(they had those allready), it was the entire IP, it was sold jointly by 3D Realms and Remedy, since 3D Realms and Remedy both co-owned it.

Remedy could have kept their share of it if they wanted too, infact AFAIK the IP was sold because Remedy didn't want to develop a 3rd game and 3D Realms didn't want to work with somebody else.

The deal with Take 2 about the IP rigths has enabled Remedy to fully self-fund their next game, whatever that may be.

This new franchise is developed in a similar manner to Max Payne. Who the 3rd party developer is is still unknown.

Considering how big the company has gotten this makes sense. Entirely too many people to be working on one game, if I remember.

As for Scott Miller, well, he has mostly shut up, hasn't he? We used to get quotes from him every day, but hes kept his mouth shut most of the past two years. George talks as much as ever, but he's always been the quiet one.

It used to be that Scott talked a lot. Now it's more that when he talks EVERYONE listens.

But yes, odds are he'll begin talking a ton once DNF gets within 8-12 months. So we're a long, long, long way off. Especially since they're less reliable than Valve, and Valve's 8-10 months became 22 very quickly.
