april 1996. cover of 'computer gaming world' is bc3k. ds has been tooting his own horn ever since and given us games that are sub par. wherever he goes contracts are broken or dissolved with publishers and customers are give games that are broken. yet time and time again he claims the fault isn't his but with publishers who were dishonest or gamers unwilling to read the game manuals,install all the patches, and find a analog joystick to play with so they aren't even allowed on the game website any more if they voice a few complaints or problems. there's nothing illegal in releasing a bad game. but when you promise a great deal over and over again and say each time this is the game i envisioned and total control of its development is mine there comes a point when you have to take responsibility and stop blaming others.

I have heard but I can only speak of my own personal dealings with him. I even told him Nexus:The Jupiter Incident had better graphics than UC and despie his reputation he was pretty cool about it. Again these are my own personal dealings with him.

Have you ever seen him go out his way to insult them, though? Or, indeed, proclaiming himself to be an 'alpha leader' (so he doesn't have to listen to people), and then insulting a dutch forumite for a slight linguistic misunderstanding. Or claiming poor review scores are the reviewers fault, not his.
And...well, you could go on for pages about this. But he displays the most unprofessional attitude towards prospective customers I've ever seen in a developer. Which is why I don't like him.... I mean, most people would try to be courteous and polite, even if they feel they are being insulted, but he doesn't - just goes to being the lowest common denominator in a one.
And if there are 2 traits which are good at pissing me off, it's unjustified arrogance and unnecessary rudeness.

You are good at throwing insults at devs... why dont you do better?
My living doesn't depend on making games and getting them sold. When you do something as a profession, the standards are a bit higher. Saying we should make our own games is like telling Pavoratti to make a better sandwich if he gets a poor quality BLT at a restaurant and complains about it. It's not a standard he's expected to be held to, while it is expected of a 'fine dining establishment', and since he is their customer, he's perfectly just in complaining. In the same way, a short-order cook isn't expected to be an exceptional tenor. So, Internet (yes, all of you), can we not ever use this stupid argument again?

If you don't like him or his games and you don't buy or play them then why do you care if others do?
I don't care - but Derek Smart thread's brighten up my otherwise dreary day like no other. As normal I got woken up before sunrise by my two year telling me "I got poo" (no matter how much we try to change that little phrase he still uses it).
As you can imagine wiping poo off a little boy's bum before you've even smelt the coffee is not the best start to the day. But logging onto blue's news to see a Smart war starting can brighten things up no end!

What's really entertaining is that 16-year old, phd-less acne'd, parent's basement living schoolkids create better art and gameplay for...oh...just about any mod in existence 
I think that that's one of the many reasons to slag Derek Smart off.
